A week or so ago when responding to a discussion I wrote that if I was able to buy a holiday home in the sun, it would most likely be on the island of Madeira. Now people there are experiencing one of the world's dreadful disasters and I have been watching on television as the water and mud pours down from the mountains to the coastal areas. It has completely overwhelmed the great culverts designed to channel rainwater to the sea and protect roads and towns. The death toll I last heard was over 40 and growing, nothing like the long lists in Haiti and other disaster areas, but horrendous all the same. I can't help wondering where diaster will strike next, can you?
