we all know that the boxing of yesteryears has changed into the boxing of today. from having 8 original weight divisions (fly, bantam, feather, light, welter, middle, light heavy, and heavy) into having the in-between wights or junior/super weights (junior fly, super middle, etc...), each weight division has its king.
from the atom (jimmy wilde - gereatest flyweight of all time), to the will o' the wisp (willie pep - IMO the greatest featherweight ever), to the greatest (muhamad ali), these individuals have reigned supreme in their respective weight class.
however there are fighters that reigned from one weight division to higher ones. examples are the four horsemen (duran, leonard, hearns, and hagler) of the golden era of boxing (mid 70's to mid 80's). there are also the contemporary fighters that jumped from one class to another like roy jones jr, julio cesar chavez, oscar dela hoya, floyd mayweather and manny pacquiao. im sure you know these guys fairly well.
so there are the guys who opted to fight in one weight division and reign supreme, and there are the other fighters that dont stay long in one weight division, and fight bigger, badder guys in the kingdom of fisticuffs. so would their accomplishments in one or more divisions be enough to give them the title of Pound for Pound "The Greatest of All Time"? lets put the spotlight on a fighter namely manny pacquiao.
manny pacquiao started from the junior flyweights and probably ending his career in the jr middleweights as his highest (he could have a fight with paul williams or winky wright here), he has proven that he is one of the best of this generation. conquering multiple weight divisions is not easy. so its a big accomplishment by the Little Big Man. from 106 lbs, he myt amass 41-48 lbs of weight in his entire career. talk about being buff.
now, lets look at the heavies where there is no weight limit. Muhamad ali for instance is a natural heavyweight and he has fought monsters in the forms of foreman, frazier, and liston. those guys were big and bad and yearning to give the hurt to him. and those guys weighed over 250 lbs. yet he was able to beat em silly with his unearthly speed (he was ridiculously fast for a big guy). the power output of a single punch from a heavyweight is so devastating that one hit and its game over (that's what the heavies is known for "one punch knockout"). the punches here are disgustingly strong.
right now, even a giant like nikolai valuev (standing at 7'1 and weighing over 300 lbs) is boxing. certainly bigger, stronger, and more athletic types of heavyweights will arise to claim the title "greatest of all time".
in my opinion the greatest of all time would still come from the heavyweights. that guy myt have godly attributes that would give him a 100% victory and 100% KO rate. unbelievable right? hehe. just kiddin guys. probably just around those stats.
now what say you guys?

Boxing is separated by divisons so there is a lesser mismatchn and as a precautionary measures of the sports. Imagine a straw weight fights againts a heavyweight? Thats why they do it. On my opinion, a boxer could be the best of all time in any division he belongs and how he conquer the greats on the said weight class. You mention manny paquiao as a great fighter and I also see him having the resume of an extra ordinary fighter. Its so amaizing how he done this accomplishments... Im so interested with boxing because of him ..two thumbs UP!!
