Does anyone take any notice of members' myLot rankings?

I'm very new to myLot and I'm puzzled by the rankings system. I had glanced at other people's rankings and assumed that if they were, say, 25,999 out of 26,000, they weren't very good. Now, however, rankings have started to appear beside MY name in some of my postings - and they're very low down! I know I'm not brilliant but I don't think I'm that bad either! Are the rankings purely worked out on numbers - does quality of posts not come into it at all? I think it should because I have read some high ranking myLotters and they have been totally illiterate. I'm not snobby about spelling and grammar as long as I can understand the message but sometimes the posts are written so badly that I haven't a clue what they're on about!

Hello, and welcome to MyLot. I'm sure you've now checked out Alice's link, so you know all about the rankings. Basically, it's based on how others rate your posts, so it's not necessarily how good you are, but how good others think you are, which is something else altogether. Your rankings in different interests will increase as you become more well known on MyLot. Lots of people don't bother to rate posts and discussions at all, while others rate everything. If you haven't noticed, there's a +, -, and ! next to each post. That's for positive and negative rating and reporting abuse, which would be plagiarism, posting referral links and offensive posting, among other things. Always aim for quality of posts, because that's what really counts here, and that's what will build your MyLot reputation. If you become known for posting interesting topics and making appropriate, knowledgeable responses, you will soon build up a friends list of like minded members and you will have a great time here, as well as earning a little. It's not megabucks, but it's great to be paid for something you enjoy.

i think the interest rankings just show how often and how much our participation in certain topic/interest is. it just describes where we start more discussions in and which topics we often respond to. low interest rankings does not necessarily mean low quality posts either. when we refer to quality posts, we have the discussion rating system (+-!) for measuring the quality of our posts, which in turn tantamounts to our mylot reputation. (you'll have this once you reach 100 posts and get a star/reputation.) the more we participate in certain interests, the higher our interest rankings will be. goodluck!

That's a great reply. Thank you very much. I have so much to learn about myLot. I don't get a lot of free time but I'm slowly but surely going through the myLot guidelines. There seems to be a lot to remember about what is and isn't allowed. Hopefully, I won't breach any rules. I'd hate to have my account deleted as I find myLot fun!

you're welcome louise. mylot is a great site for discussions and learnings. it's great for interaction and meeting international people too... new friends and such. hope you get to enjoy mylot more and participate some more. even if i've been in the site for quite some time now, it still pays to re-read the mylot guidelines from time to time as they may have added new features and guidelines in the site over time. i've learned to be choosy in discussions to respond to... so that i can avoid having posts deleted. just follow the guidelines and enjoy posting. have a great weekend!

Rankings are based on the number of positive ratings you get for discussions and responses. The go up and down and the community here cycles between complaining about it and praising it. So seasoned users pretty much ignore it. Your best bet to succeed here, is to start quality discussions, give quality responses, always, always have a sense of humor, never take anything personally, and build up a good friends list of people that will respond to your discussions. You only earn money for discussions you have started and one response on it, and for a response to someone elses, and one comment under another response. But it adds up pretty quickly, and mylot is very dependable in its monthly payouts. And by the way, the ranking is shown in the star beside a users name. Hover your mouse over a star and you will get their rank out of l00. Different stars of different colors indicate their number out of 100. The numbers you see beside your user name is your post count, not your ranking. You go a number in your post count for every response you give and for every discussion you start as soon as there is a response to it. You have to remember too that a lot of people here are not first language English, and most are here to improve their skills. Others are just poor writers. Once you reach 100 posts, you will get a star of your own and your ranking and color for that star will depend on the quality of your postings and the positive ratings you have received to that point. So good luck, and here is hoping your star is a blue ten.............

Ooops.........my bad. I thought when she wrote members rankings she meant the stars. Thanks for clearing that up for me.

sparkofinsanity, I think louisefrank is talking about the interest rankings. For example, to the right of your user name here, you are listed as ranked 1,767 out of 24,307 in mylot.com.

An explanation of the star system was very welcome too - it probably would have been my next question! The point you make about posters from some countries wanting to improve their English hit a nerve. I have been pretty annoyed at the quality of English of some myLotters but I will now be a lot more understanding knowing they are only trying to improve. Thank you.

The number with close and open parenthesis next to your name indicates how many discussions you answered and posted. The more you participated in myLot, the more it will increase and the more earnings you accumulate, so keep on logging in and actively participate. Welcome to myLot!

Thanks for the welcome! I'm beginning to realise that consistency is very important so I will endeavour to post regularly. I'm now getting jealous of everyone's stars!

It is not just 'myLot'rankings but ranking in all interests here and they are based on one's performance, participation in a particular 'interest'. One cannot keep a track of excelling in any interest but just participate as best as one can and who knows one fine day you will be ranked first in any particular interest/s!! My best wishes are with you.

Thank you for your reply. I think I'm not going to worry about ratings, rankings, stars etc but just take each discussion and comment on its own merits.

hi louisefrank those are just the place where each of us are in the number of posts we made in any one interest.it has nothing at all to do with the quality of anyones posts. No it should not as this is n ot a rating at all. we get rated once and that for heavens sakes should be enough for the most picky person here., and I happen to think a lot of our discussions are quality discussions. wait until you have a little more experience before you sling around this totally illerate crap.please bear in mind that a lot of posters here do not use English as their primary language and mylot admins asks us all to be tolerant with them and not make the kind of remarks you just made. they are not illiterate they are just trying to translate their thoughts from their native language to our English language and thats not so easy.So Louise do be more tolerant.,

You're right, Hatley. I should be more tolerant. Read my reply to Sparkofinsanity (number 2) where I acknowledge that. I'm still learning so I hope you'll be patient with me too! But thank you for your input, it's been very helpful.
