A pc with processor lesser than a dual core is best use a Windows XP. You can use a Windows Vista but it will be slower, it will run faster with Windows XP and it is more advisable having that specifications. Have a nice day! Happy myLotting!

Yes, you can also use a Windows XP operating system for a Dual or even Quad Core. But why not use the latest OS such as Vista and 7 where it can run smoothly with a pc with dual or quad core? Or if you want you can have both, you can have a dual boot pc. Have a nice day!

I highly doubt that Windows 7 can run properly on only 256MB of RAM. I believe that's why almost all computers, if new, come with at LEAST 1GB of RAM (generally now they are all coming with 2GB+). That's just my opinion. It sounds like the top posters computer is pretty old so who knows if the processor could even handle Windows 7. I would have suggested XP just because it's old enough to run good with 256MB of RAM.

the memory available with PC is 1024+256MB not only 256MB. So WINDOWS 7 will run ok.

as regards windows os suitable for your configuration i think windows xp should be realy better than vista and 7!!in reality these 2 os needs a little bit more of ram and sos urely with vista you will have problems and even with 7 too they need an upgraded configuration!!xp normally works onpc that have no so upgraded config also because if you think that the majority of mini-netbooks will work ok with x and their configuration is not so high too!!

I suggest that you using an old xp windows. It is suitable because of pantium 4 and your capacity of ram is design for the xp at ealier wndows xp edition. The newer window such as windows vista and windows 7 is using a higher ramdam access emory(ram). But if yu upgrade you ram, I also suggest taht you use a windows 7 insteed of windows vista. It is because windows 7 is a little smoth because it does not use so much of ram. But windows vista use a lot of ram. That why many people is changing tfrom vista to windows 7 now. Windows 7 is also more stable than windows vista. But unfortunately window 7 is still new and you need always upating your windows.

Definetly XP is the best for your PC. Yeah, you can go for Windows 7 but i don't see any point in doing so, because you might get problems regarding visual performance. just intsall Xp Service Pack 2 or 3.

with such RAM, i think only xp can run smoothly while vista is something which is absolutely not for you.

It's a good configuration for XP. Vista and Windows 7 are gluttons with RAM and will not work on your PC.
