Do you sew your own custom clothing or buy off the rack?

I know times are tight and people are more frugal now then they have ever been. My child had to make a custom shirt for competition and I was amazed to see how many people were in the fabric stores. There were a lot. I find it easier to look for something already made then to make it yourself but it may not be more cost effective. I mean the upside is that you have an original piece that no one can duplicate which is quite cool. What are your views?

I'd love to be able to make my own clothing. That might be something I work on this year. I'd have to use patterns, though. I'm nowhere near original enough to make my own designs. :P

The thing with making your own designs is that you cannot mess it up. Unless your me lol. I get frustrated easily, I think that is my main problem. Next comes patience. I must of missed that line too, lol. I want what I want when I want it. That usually means instantly. I know practice makes perfect. I see some awesome designs when people get done with it. But I am forced to buy off the rack since I am not gifted in sewing. Thanks for responding.

By the way, Nice topic. I think I will go with mix and match, means that sometimes you can wear the ones in stores and sometimes we can customize our own so that we can get unique looks as well as it will be easier for us too. And I also think that both materials are somewhere of equal price, means the budget is almost same. :)

Thanks. I can only do so little in the sewing department. I had to get material and other stuff from the fabric store so my daughter could design her own shirt in competition. That was fun, lol. We looked at each other and I said, well make whatever you want to make, it is your design so there is no way you can mess it up. She did pretty good if I do say so myself. She did not get the skills from me though. The price is competitive from store and fabric shopping. We did see a lot people in the store , I was shocked, back to basics. Thanks for responding.

i sew my own stuff when i can but its more about it being the only way i can get anything that fits! and t is annoying as there a lots of fabric that you can't get as home sewer that ready to wear clothes can be made of.

I like the off the rack clothing but I also like the original wear. I have no skills in sewing lol. I can use fabric glue, but hat is my extent of making clothes. I have tried. I know what you mean about getting them to fit right. That Is a plus when you make your own clothing. Thanks for responding.

I can sew simple types of clothes but I don't have my own sewing machine at home so I just buy myself clothes off the rack. Branded clothes are very expensive, even if they're put on 'sale'. So I just look for nice clothes in the thrift stores which may not be branded but they are stylish and doesn't cost much.

Wow, you have one up on men. I am trying to sew , lol. I cannot do it at all. Certain pieces of clothing do need to go on sale few times over before they are affordable. I agree with that. I have seen some pretty nice clothing in the thrift stores too. Some even have store tags on them. I have even considered buying in bulk to get the pieces i want and sell the rest at a reasonable price. Thanks for input,

I want to learn how to sew so I can sew my own dress.right now,I go to a tailor to have a dress made for me.I love both buying in a secondhand rack and having a dress made for me.I don't like retail.I would rather be creative and think of a dress with cut, color, and style that is truly ME.

I like originality but I cannot sew to save my life. I want t o take lesson at a fabric store or something. I think it is more cost effective to purchase something already made versus trying to make it yourself for the most part. I have purchased everything to make an outfit but the fabric was so expensive I am scared to do it. Its a one shot trial and error. The fabric cost me over $50.00. But to buy the outfit already made would cost me over $100.00 without the extra pieces. All fabric was purchased on sale. Thus defeating the purpose of trying to sew my own outfit for daughter. But I agree having an original piece is the best, especially when your complimented on it. Thanks for replying

i guess its fine to sew or make your own coz you can choose your own design but in my part since i dont know how to sew i guess i will just buy ready made in store. i know how to sew like if theres a cut in my clothes but not to the point of making or design the whole clothes since im not professional enough to do that and i might just going to ruin the design.

I like the fact that you can express yourself in your own designs. Originality. Unfortunately my skills are missing. My family can sew. I must of been that line when they were giving out the skill lol. I have tried. I can put on embellishments, ribbons, etc... Actual making of the clothes I will be there forever. So I have to go to the store and purchase off the rack. Thanks.
