I believe that Haiti were more affected by the earthquake they received because Haiti is a less developed, more deprived areas. The buildings and shanties didn't have the structuring or resources to handle an earthquake and so much of Haiti fell.

Thats true. Chile gets earthquakes quite frequently and so they have building codes that stipulate that buildings must be built to a certain standard to resist earthquakes. Haiti has no such standards. Also the Haitian earthquake happened at a much shallower deapth than the Chilean one, and that (according to what I've read) makes a considerable difference in the power of the tremors at the surface.

I do think the two incidents are different from each other since Haiti is in the Atlantic part and Chile is in the pacific side of the oceans. With the loss of life it seems that there is lesser loss in the Chile as they say that Chile is used to it and they are really prepared in terms of building their houses and buildings. They are a bit wealthier than Haiti which you can see the difference after the destruction happened Haiti look very helpless while Chile is also but then you can see that government has started mobilizing itself before the international aid came pouring in. In Haiti, everything stopped after the quake and until bnow they have barely risen up on the crisis as of yet.

Chile is not a "bit" wealthier, rsa. It is a developped country. I hope other countries continue helping Haiti: we are rebuilding our country as we have always done. It takes time though. As with developpment and wealth, we accept immigrants from other countries who have more problems than the ones we have. Many immigrants have come from Peru lately and from Ecuador. The latest mass immigration in comming form Phillipines.

Chile quake is 800 times stronger than Haiti quake, but I agree that Haiti is less developed, so the impact is worse. Indonesia was hit by the most destructive disaster in 2004, when tsunami hit several countries in Asia, and Indonesia is the worst hit. Last year, we experienced strong quakes in West Java and West Sumatra. I live in Jakarta, and I felt the quake in West Java as well. Pray is must and of course, we can`t avoid quake but at least we must know some ways to minimize the effect.
