Beauty in the eye of the beholder or a general idea of what beauty?

There is a saying that states "Beauty is in the eye of the beholder" but is this true? Or are we preconditioned by the media and sorts to all have a similiar conception of what beauty is? What is your idea of what is beautiful and what is ugly?

Sure, it's somewhat in the eye of the beholder. I recall a conversation back in the 80's where my sister and I thought one actress was pretty (don't remember who) and her boyfriend and mine said, nahhhhh....

hello renaissance,
In my opinion,it depends on each individual person sees and look at the physical aspects or inner self of what is beauty?
In general when we say beauty,..it is literally beautiful, could it be a person or a place of scenery.
If we dig deeper ...is it a natural beauty of the nature, same like with the person.
Was he/she beautiful naturally...or just a product of cosmetics?
So,i guess,it really depends on the eyes of the beholder.
We had our own standards and definition of what is beauty.
I go with the natural beauty of a person, literally physically beautiful and also inner beauty.

Generally, whatever pleases our mind, our senses is called beauty and whatever creates ill feelings in our mind falls in the second category.Did you ever see a statue that is ugly?Did you ever find a physical form of Satan? This simply means that the human eyes always look for beauty and divinity in beauty.Whatever form in nature that is not symmetric is not acceptable to human eyes.We look for symmetry in nature and call it beauty. For example in movies like the 300,the traitor has a deformed body and he was caught by disease.Hence, the concept.

My definition of true beauty comes from within. Beauty is all about self confidence in ones self. There are many average looking people even in Hollywood today that are really successful and making millions of dollars because of their overall assessment of their own selves. But to be perfectly honest with you, people who have the ideal beauty look (media's point of view on beauty) will receive even more doors opening for them. That's just how the media portrays being beautiful.

I agreed with that. But it depends on the person. What is the criteria of defining the beauty. For me, beauty must not only physical attraction but also has a kind heart.
