Have you ever left anything outside in the hope that someone will want it?

I wondered if anyone has ever done like I did to get rid of something. I did not want some excerise bars anymore, well not me the family lol, and thought too heavy to seel on ebay as people would have to collect and so I left them out the front of the house with a notice saying that they were free to anyone who wanted them. Free? no one wanted them. Put up a notice saying Only £1 and please put money in jar which I left out. The idea was was that I was sure someone would take them awsay and not put £1 in the jar. Next day there was the jar with the £1 in, bars gone but a note saying if you have anymore please phone me! So I think people think there is no such thing as something for nothing but if you pay a small amount it is better. What do you think? do you think if it is free it is not much good unless you pay something for it? x

Nice discussion topic by the way! My Mum had her old television replaced (and that was taken away by the repairman) however, she wondered what to do with her old stand that it stood on as her new telly came with a more relevant, glass stand. My Dad had the solution. He took the old stand (a nice one actually with glass doors on the front) and left it on the front wall. Within about 2 hours it had gone! No idea who took it but it at least the problem was resolved. He didn't charge for it either.

It sure is my friend. There was absolutely nothing wrong with this little cabinet either so I'm pleased someone has realised this and taken it to a new home.

This reminded me of a story a friend told me. Her dad wanted to get rid of a clothes dryer. It was old but still worked well. He set it out at the curb with a sign that said free. three days go by, nobody takes it. He decided to put a sign on it that said $20. The next day, it was gone!

We take unwanted items to a charity shop. They can sell the items or give them away. It is common practice in Australia, especially in the big cities, to leave unwanted items on the footpath and they usually disappear quickly. The local Council also conducts "clean up" days where they will collect items left on the footpath. The rule is that is must be able to be lifted by two men. It is common to see lounge chairs, furniture, appliances, bicycles, games etc. On those days, it is usual to see people driving around, checking out the items and taking what they want.

you have to be careful here about leaving big items out as the council will fine you heavily for what they call "Fly Tipping". We have to pay the council to take items away but can take them ourselves to local tips. Sometimes with heavy furniture and items this is not too easy to do as you have to hire a van to transport it.

When I was moving cross country three years ago I put stuff outside on the sidewalk and put a sign that said "Free" just so I could get rid of it all. Most of it was gone within a couple of hours. I would never consider putting a jar out asking for them to leave money for anything because first of all I don't think anyone would leave money. But then what if someone did then it was stolen by someone else. Which in that neighborhood it would have been stolen. So I just give it away for free.

I must admit that I was very surprised to see money in the tin and it was nice to think there are some honest people about because quite a few must have passed it.

Around here, that is the easiest way to get rid of something that is unwanted. Just put it out by the curb and they will come. Even if it is something that you would think that no one could ever use, there is always someone. I guess that has to do with the fact that I live on a street with an abundance of traffic coming up and down the street. There have been many things that have been gotten rid of by just putting it outside by the street. I never really thought of actually charging money for anything. A lapse of judgment on my part, as I am normally one for finding ways to get a cent or two every now and again. Then again, some of the stuff that I put in there, I feel like I should be paying them to take it. Just a little above garbage but I guess some people have a use for those things.

I leave items by the road all the time for others to take. It usually takes an hour or two for them to be gone. The item that took the longest was a riding lawnmower that needed a bit of work, took a week for that to get taken.

mind you I expect someone thought it would be hard to sit on it and ride it away without someone shouting oi at them lol

I put stuff out by the trash all the time. It's gone quickly. I also found a really cool rain-stick by a neighbors trash. I took it and gave it to someone who collects weird and unusual musical instruments. He was thrilled to get it.
