What's Your Best Home-Made Remedy For Colds and Flu?

So I ran out of cold medicine and looked in my pantry to see what I could conjure up to make me feel better. The trusty old chicken noodle soup was there, but it doesn't quite to the trick for me on the spot. Then, since it was all I had, I added a teaspoon of garlic powder, a double dash of white pepper, and a generous amount of fresh lemon juice. I remember mom always telling me to drink it as hot as possible. It really worked, even stopped the sniffles. What's your best home-made remedy?

Brandy. It ain't home made- but it takes care of most colds and flu, despite whatever fancy names the new fever naming specialists keep on making up. At least it won't kill me faster than pills. Mind you, if you ain't a drinker, please avoid this recommendation and stick to Black peppered black coffee ( that also works as my grandma taught me) Regards.

I think Brandy will just knock me out . . . even a slurp. Black peppered black coffee???? Wow, that also sounds lethal. I might let my son try that first.

One of my favorite OTC throat lozenges/cough remedies is called Fisherman's Friend, throat lozenge. It is licorice, menthol and black pepper. Tastes incredibly nasty, but it grows on you. It also will open your head up and clear a chest cold.

Well, Lakota told you, take lemon juice, whiskey, sugar, and hot water, stir together and drink. Never had one, but Mom said the next step is to cover up heavily and it will make you sweat out the cold or flu. Rock candy was considered better than just plain sugar.

Ha! Brandy!! My grandma used to mix this concoction with lemons and honey.. It was like some tart lemonade but was actually quite good. I guess it used to work because it would help us go to sleep while we were ill. Now I've learned that honey is a natural healing agent and the lemons were packed with vitamin C!
All I know is it was delicious, I almost looked forward to getting sick just so my grandmother could mix up a batch of her potion..

Oh yeah and my Mom swears by golden seal. If you get sick, Golden Seal will clear it up. It does flush the system but it isn't the tastiest thing in the world. My mother would make tea out of this nasty stuff and I'd have to add a lot of sugar or honey but it works as well.. Nowadays I can stand the taste more than as a kid but it is another remedy I know works..

When I was young and had a cold my father always gave me a hot drink with whiskey, lemon and sugar in it. He said that would help to sweat it out. I don't know about that, but it would make me sleepy. I think sleep is the cure for anything. You have to let your body rest and repair itself.
Now that I am older I drink hot tea with lemon, honey and whiskey in it. I don't know if it helps but it is comforting, and reminds me of my childhood.

Hot tea, lemon and honey cures a lot of different ales. Unfortunately, I only have rum in the fridge, no whiskey. I'm not sure I can actually stomach whiskey. I'm sissy like that.

If you can bear it, eat a raw onion sandwich. You can add mayo, and spices, but nothing else. It works~

You can boil an onion in water with sugar and make a homemade cough syrup.

How long do you boil it for, and how much sugar do you add?

I know of a variety of things that are helpful. I will drink apple cider vinegar and honey in hot water. Lemon and honey in tea (black or green). You can stir equal parts of either vinegar and honey or lemon and honey and take a small spoonful each time you cough. I like fresh pineapple for a sore throat. Horseradish is supposed to clear head and chest congestion. If you do not like to eat it, just open the jar and breathe deeply. It would be something to stir a bit into your chicken soup. All kinds of tea are good, probably because they keep you from getting dehydrated.

I'm gonna try the apple cider vinegar and honey just because I've never heard about it. And we always have plenty of it in our pantry. Lemon and honey straight up? Sounds tarty. I'll try it. Thanks Garden Gerty.

It would be different for me than it is for my vegan daughter.
I like home cooked chicken and vegetable soup.It must be completely natural. So I cook the chicken in very small pieces. I would add finely chopped onion, small pieces of potato, grated carrot, finely chopped celery, parsley.
For my daughter I give her herbal tablets. The ones I am using at the moment are Super Strength horse radish, garlic and Vit C. As she appears to have a bit of a head cold, I made her take two of these tablets this morning.

We drink Calamansi juice instead of lime, but it is needed to drink the calamansi cold, not hot so that it will not lessen the vitamin intake of it. I also drink soup of ginger for colds. Eversince when we are a child, we do not drink medicine but we drink calamansi and ginger as an alternative and more effective for that.

A few people have said to drink green tea. I have a box of it, but never tried it. I'm assuming Neo Citron is a powder of sorts . . . lemon flavored?

Personally I think green tea is a little blah without honey & lemon in it, but I do quite like it with. Neo Citron is a lemon flavored powder with cold medicine in it that you mix with hot water. It's a nice hot drink for when you're all stuffed up and the medicine does help. The sweet, lemony flavor goes great with green tea.

I do not have any made remedy for colds and flu. I trust my specialist doctor expertise. I do not go to normal clinic even though i feel minor illness. I will straight away consult my specialist doctor and do not mind he charge expensive. I believe that health more important than wealth. I was sick seriously 2 years ago and i apprecite my life after that.

I'm glad you're all better now. Second chances are always appreciated. I don't have a doctor but if I did he would probably tell me what everyone has been telling me here on MyLot. Or he'd give me NyQuil and send me to bed.

Nice!! I've got plenty of lemons. Am I to breath the steam or something? Sounds good. I squeezed a few oranges this morning and made home-made orange juice. It was wonderful!

That sounds pretty good. I've heard of Schnapps, but can't say I've ever had one. I only know my friends drink it when they go skiing . . . or maybe after skiing. It keeps them warm they say.

There is a saying, if you treat the cold, it will remain for one week. If you do not treat the cold, then it will remain for SEVEN days. So I just apply vicks and take hot vapour to the face. By this bad water will go from our head and chest. If it is severe, I take Tusq tablet. It is mild and immediately controls running nose and sneeze.

Hey ma'am,
It's very easy. Eating fruits rich in Vitamin C, chewing cloves and gingers, taking spiced tea made with cloves, ginger and black pepper, gargling with salty warm water, sniffing pure mustard oil into nostrils, drinking sufficient lukewarm water. This helps me a lot fight against cold and flu.
Have a healthful day.

Just plenty of water and fruits, then keep laying in bed or just simply sit on a chair and rest..

Yeah, I feel a little dehydrated. Water helps a lot, though I do need to put a wedge of lemon in it. And I'm all for resting.

The best home remedy for the flu and common cold is ginger and coriander drink with some jaggery added to it. Surely this will be a great drink during those odd times.Even tamarind and pepper crushed to milk with some sugar will give releif to the throat during cold. Also we should gogle with luke salt water before and after bed.
