Can Windows Live Messenger Slow A Computer Down?

I wonder if anyone can help me please and I would appreciate a non-technical answer to my question, if that's ok. Well, on the whole my computer does behave itself, especially after some professional fixed it for me last year. It will be 10 years old in September but is still a very good computer. However, I recently downloaded the latest version of Windows Live Messenger. I have logged into it and it is displayed on my browser (or whatever it is) at the bottom of my screen as the person I want to chat to is not online at the moment. Under the circumstances, is this a good idea? The reason I ask is that my computer is now whirring away like it's about to take off. As far as I know there is no scan ongoing as it would show up. What's causing it, anyone know?

Windows, Windows and Windows is what is slowing your computer down. Having Windows as your operating system means that you have way too many things on your computer that you will never use. You also need security software that slows your computer down. I used to use Windows as most of the world do and always had problems with it slowing down, freezing and fighting off viruses. I now use Kubuntu as my operating system which is Linux freeware and can be downloaded for free. You need to have a little more experience with computers to use it though. It is a very basic package that has nothing on it that you do not really need. You then add only what you need for free as you require it. I installed a program that allows me to run Microsoft Windows programs on it, a video editor and a few other programs all for free. I now have no more need for security software, no more internet freezing problems and my old computer loads a lot faster than it did when it was overloaded with Windows stuff!

Hello there! Mmm, how interesting! I do use Mozilla Firefox as opposed to Internet Explorer (which is still there but not used). Whether this is conflicting even though Firefox is the only application open I don't know. I do like the Add-ons with Firefox and I've made sure I don't have too many of them downloaded. Kubuntu, I really must check it out. Thanks.

I am now downloading it. Should I uninstall other applications or is it done automatically (sorry I'm being so thick).

Whoa! Do not uninstall Windows unless you have backed up everything you have on your computer. You also must be prepared for the fact that Kubuntu is nothing like Windows! I went to Kubuntu after I lost everything on Windows already. I had to eithe rinstall a fresh blank version of Windows, or go to freeware. I chose the free path with Kubuntu as it gave me more flexibility. Kubuntu is not simple to use at first and I was lucky to have the help of a friend with years of Kubuntu experience to help me. You can run both operating systems side by side on your computer, but you will still have lots of stuff from Windows on there. One other option is to remove all of your documents, pictures and stuff that you do not need every day to an external hard drive that you just plug in when you need to access something. This frees up space on your actual computer.

Are you using MSN Messenger or Live Messenger ? I found that MSN Messenger was slowing my browsing on my desktop computer, and solved it installing Live Messenger. I'm surprised. It's not a greedy software eating a lot of resources. Live Messenger is probably not the culprit here.

I have Live Messenger and I really think I should uninstall it as it's a pain!

I have been advised to try this already and it doesn't work on my computer for some reason. Thanks anyway, it's much appreciated you coming up with a suggestion like that.

Don't be angry ;) If a previous version of Live Messenger was fine, why don't you try to download it and reinstall it ? By the way, I'm replying in a Linux notebook : no spywares, no antivirus. My version of Linux will not work on a 10 years old computer, but I suggest a concurrent to Kubuntu (It's what I like with Linux : it's free and comes with a lot of flavors :) ), PCLinuxOS with LXDE desktop : you can download a Live CD and try it before install at http://pclinuxos.com/?page_id=188 It doesn't come with Firefox, but you can install it with all your favorites add-ons. If this version of Linux does not speed up your PC 200% I'll eat my tong and never post here again !

The newer version of anything is going to take up more memory, cpu, etc. than the older version, so the older your computer is, the more likely that a new version of something is going to cause a slow down.

Well that's the logical "Spock" answer I would expect from you my friend and yes, it does make sense doesn't it? I don't play as many games on this as I used to and MyLot is actually ideal for me as there's not too much going on in the background. I use AdBlocker on Firefox and it really helps with my computer's performance. If I was using Internet Explorer I'd get nowhere.

To put it simply you have a piece of software running permanently, checking across the internet to see if any of your friends come online and then updating you to their current status. It’s doing this 100’s of times every minute. As such it is a drain on your PC’s memory (RAM) and will constantly be a drain until either you use it, which will make it a bigger drain, or shut it down. What also happens is because you have basically opened up a channel of communication across the net your anti virus software will also be working harder to monitor it in case of problems. Add that it also links to other software such as Outlook & IE it does become quite a drain on a PC especially if the PC has limited memory or several pieces of software already running.

Being the "Billy No Mates" that I am though I only have one friend on Messenger and I've never had anyone try to contact me because of my obscure hotmail email address. If it happens again (OK at the mo) I shall close it down, it's the only way my computer will regain its speed. Thank you.

you can see how much memory its taking to run it but if your not using it and its down at the bottom then it shouldn't slow your computer down any. you also can change the priory of it.

Some more memory has been freed up recently to speed the computer up as it wasn't running at all. A guy got rid of stuff I didn't need or use and that helped enormously. However, due to the time spent on my computer the more I use it the slower it will become in time and the guy who fixed it warned me of this. It seems OK at the moment though. Fingers crossed.

Computers do tend to slow as they get older for sure ...The protective layers on heatsink goes off and processor heats up more nd more affecting the overall performance of the system ...Anyways newer versions of softwares do require higher processing power as they are using newer flash players, macromedia players , java scripts etc whic tend to use more nd more processing power. U mite want to upgrade ur pc to a new one and things wud be fine ..or get older version of windows messenger which may or may not work ..or use web based windows messenger... :)

I had to upgrade to the latest Live Windows Messenger because my friend had it on his PC. At first my older version was conflicting with it so I managed to uninstall it successfully. It does make sense what you say about all these new applications requiring more memory, etc to power them. Games were much more basic in 2001 (when this computer was bought) but, having said that, for ordinary browsing and ordering stuff online it has never let me down. It has had a memory upgrade too which has helped enormously. Originally it only had 256MB of memory but now has an extra 1GB, some of which has been freed up with its recent "clean." Welcome to MyLot by the way.

I stopped using live messengers because I was getting spammed by people I did not know trying to talk to me. I noticed that the computer did slow down when I was on-line and it was very irritating at having some strange sending a sometimes "suggestible" messages. I also read in a magazine that viruses could also be sent via instant messengers, so that persuaded me to diable them. I don't mind the on-line ones at certain social sites, because it is only other users that can contact me. And whilst I have a messenger ap in my Yahoo Mail account, I set it to "invisible" so nobody can see that I am on-line. My friends though know to try sending me a message to see if I am around because they know I set it to invisible. _Derek

Aah, Yahoo Messenger, those were the days! Me and hubby used to communicate this way whenever we were apart (I used to live at Mum's 100 miles away) on this very computer no less! We would talk on the telephone as well but Yahoo Messenger was quieter lol.

At the moment I am in Messenger but I've just got the little figure showing in the bottom right hand corner as opposed to the full tab (or whatever it's called) and my machine seems to be OK at the moment, fingers crossed!

It must have to keep checking all the time to see if there are any connections trying to be made with you, so maybe that is the whirring. I haven't ever used it myself. I am using Linux Puppy on this computer which is very fast and secure. Linux is very good on older computers but you do need to be prepared to learn new things. Mine has Skype for when I want to chat with my daughter. We just go on facebook, message that we want to chat on skype and decide a time. You can instant chat on facebook but it does have a lag sometimes.

Thanks for that, it's much appreciated. At the mo I just have the little man down in the bottom right so he's not as "in yer face" and it is switched on, so I shall be informed if my friend is online at any stage. Luckily, I don't have anyone else trying to contact me so at least I'm not being spammed by people I don't know.
