Does My Lot provide a Social Service?

I know My Lot is here to allow people a forum to communicate and share ideas and make friendships. We get paid a little for it too. My Lot admin also earn from it, by people clicking their ads. But the question I have sometimes thought of, does My Lot provide a social service? I believe it does. How many discussions have you seen from people with stresssful issues they need to share and get support with? How many times have you seen discussions from people needing help with computer errors? How many discussions have you seen about tragedies in the World, they encourage people to be aware of and help? I couldn't work out the stats on this, but I think the percentage of discussions on social issues is very high. There are people on My LOt that may not be getting help from any other service; people in distress. My Lot can provide a first stop advice service. I guess that isnt what admin intended in the first place, but it has ended up like that anyway. So tell me My Lotters, do you think My Lot provides a social service?

Mylot is the first social site I joined when I first get connected to the net. It has grown from a simple social site for the purposes of international friendships to a full blown social service that saw many life problems solved by mylot specialists in all fields. It attracts not only those who have internal problems but learned people in various professional fields who are more than willing to lend their ears and dispense their free doses of counseling. Looks like mylot concept has taken a twist from the original plan to cater for those in dilemma and lonely hearts. Some people need someone to talk to within the perimeters of their computer screen and mylot fits that well as it is far reaching and always have people attending to everyone woes at any hours of the day or night. I am glued to mylot for a record time (I never stay longer than 6 months in one site) partly due to my business as it demands me to stay up until the wee hours of the morning and mylot keeps me in company throughout the night. In all honesty, I love this site and the friends that has seen grown from a backward lady of the orient to someone that has digested the great intellectual minds of people from the advanced countries!

I hope you dont mean yourself as the backward lady from the Orient?? Your summasry is excel;lent. International friendship, professionals, non-professionals, the aged, the ill... we all provide companionship and support to one another. It matters not what our background, religion or country is. Well, apparently it does matter to some people, but My Lot has shown that many masny humans can overcome to small minded barriers others put up.

To be honest with you mylot is my first exposure to the international crowd. My ignorance of the outside world reduced me to a dust in the desert. Having been here for a quite a while, I have learned something about the values we cherish, truthfulness, kindness, compassion, togetherness, are shared by all humankind, even if often they are not universally observed.

You have also proven to yourself that you are equal to the world. You were never the dust in the desert, it's just that you had not the opportunity to show your true self. You are intelligent, aware and compassionate. The western culture that I live in, does not necesarily have people who have those important characteristics.

I found MyLot when I was depressed, and it was very therapeutic. I did not even realize how depressed I was, but I really felt good when I could listen to people and give them a lift. It lifted me as well. I do see people here every day who just need someone to care about them, or will ask for advice here, but would never dream of asking someone they have to see face to face. Yes, Jenny, I would agree that MyLot provides social services to people from all around the world. It is also a diplomatic service, if you will, because it helps us all get along better all around the world as we learn about each other and the various cultures we represent.

I agree completely. It is opening up our views and experiences of other peoplers and cultures. I have a number of Chinese friends, a country that would have been very difficult to get to know people in the not so distant past. I also have depression, and find my rantings and ravings about my ex on My Lot do help. It is the writing it down aspect that helps with depression, as much as getting support from people here.

I wouldn't say social service, but I would say community. If I'm having a really bad day, I can come here, read others discussions, and vent a little bit. MyLot is also a great cure for writers block because you don't have to really think. You just have to answer. It's kind of like short answer questions in high school. If I do it for long enough, eventually the muse gets re-interested and decides to reintegrate herself into my brain. Then, I can start doing real work.

hi jennybianca yes I think it does as it has been behind me for the past year or so as we first got evicted from our apartment, had our stuff in storage, found out from the antioch apartment manager that Clare who was going to be such an angel to us decided at the last possible moment to renege and called the manager to say tear up the paper, changed my mind. When we were homeless, we spent a month at a friends place, but their home was up for sale and thus we had to move back to Stanton with our best friend who put us up for three weeks til the manager got antsy.Weended up speeding a week at Salvation arm hospitality house, then my son worried for me, 83, and got me put here in Gold crest a retirement center, and he is in govsponsored apt while he is looking for work.. when I got my computer and monitor out of storage, and got on mylot and was overwhelmed with private messages from mylot friends asking if I was oay,and giving me love, support and sympathy. I was so touched by them all.So I can say mylot does provide a social service. and I just want to say I love you all, all my mylot friends, thanks for caring.

Thats is wonderful Hatley. It confirms in my mind, that My Lot does indeed provide a social service. I wasn't on My Lot when you were evicted, but I know later you told me about it. There are many people on My Lot simply for the socialisation and communication. After all, who would spend hours here just to earn a tiny bit of money. To be on My Lot means a lot more to many of us for the supprt and friendship we offer one another. Wouldnt it be great, if some benefactor provided a huge some of money for many of us to get together onm some island and meet and relax.

Yes I think My Lot provides a social service. You are right some of the discussions are about social issues or from people wanting or needing advice. I do some surveys and sometimes one of the questions is "Do you belong to a social site like Facebook". I answer no. I am not sure that is right because to me My Lot is a social site. It may not have been intended that way, like you said, but it has gotten that way.

I belong to Facebook, but only because a friend of mine posted pictures there. I very rarely go on it, and I can't see much use for it. I consider My Lot a social site also but when the questions list the sites they don't mention it. Maybe it is not as well known as some of the others but I would think it would be.

I just joined MyLot last week and it's been surprising to me how much time I've spent discussing issues, providing advice, learning from others...disagreeing with others. Jenny, I think I'd have to agree with you.

I have found so much help, advice and support here in MyLotLand, it is a wonderful place to come either for some chat, company, help, support, information etc., I took a fairly long break away to deal with a lot of real world issues and problems and am so happy to be back here again.

jennybianca, I think there are members who just like to help besides talking about what's on their mind and it is just what normal good friends would do for each other. So, I just would not call this a social service than a network of good friends. Take care and have a nice day.

Yes, there are many good friends here genuinely try to help one another. It makes us feel quite "welcome" to come onto My Lot each day and know there are people who care.

jennybianca, I am sure everyone inside here means well and see no point making oneself a laughing stock in front of a worldwide audience here. A friend in need is a friend indeed. Have a nice day.

It does for me. I'm wondering about something, I post, I get support from my friends, many of whom have been through some of the things I'm going through. It's kind of my support system away from home...

MyLot is definitely so much more than just a social forum or a way to make a little money. When you have been a member for a while you eventually come to realise what a big part of your life this site is. I’ve felt love from others when I needed it and there have been times when I felt I just helped someone who was down and out. I wonder sometimes if when MyLot was started they had any idea what a lifeline this place would be for so many people. I am so thankful I found this place!

I dont think admin would have realised what a lifeline My Lot would turn out to be. I agree that love can be shown via discussions and responses in ways we never thought. Good comments.

I think not only social but also to help us solve problems and share experiences. Treat hopelessness of what we face, and build friendships between the nations. Understand one with other members, together build a harmonious family and peace. myLot gives us something precious and how much they have struggled hard to build this site.

I like your description of harmonious family. Of course, there are a few My Lotters who aren't like that, but the rest of us can make up for it.

I have a lot of issues myself, but MyLot isn't the place I air them out. That's what friends and family are for. No Web site can take the place of real, live human beings.

Well I would have to agree that real life human beings are moire important when one has issues. However, I think there are a number of My Lotters who dont have a real human support group. You only have to read some of my responses here to see what My Lot members have done for others. I guess, My Lot can be, but doesn't have to be, a first base for people with issues.

I have never thought of it like that to be quite honest. Its mainly a discussion forum nothing more, nothing less. Why people feel they can talk here is because mylot has created the perfect social enveronment where members can talk freely and say what they have to say without the threat of ridicule. For the most part, people in general do tend to get along with one another quite easily, just like any other discussion board. Personally I don't feel that its a "social service. But, when I think of a "service" its advice given at a cost. Feeling you can ask questions, talk, that's just a friendly and open social community.

I have had some help here, and I would like to think I have helped others. I know there are times when an hour on here helps me through some tough times, so I would say yes, myLot does provide a social service.
