as most of you know I am a type two diabetic. well first I felt hungry as I answered a discussion on cheeses, then a bit dizzy so checked my blood sugar. 54. mouthful of hard candy,I quit shaking but feel like my head is miles from my feet.to any fellow diabetics out there,do you also get these lousy lows? What do you do about it? I use hard candy , 15 grams on the 15, 15 rule where you check your blood sugar in fifteen minutes after having taken 15 grams of quick sugar source of some kind,if its up to a normal reading say 90 or100 okay then have a half meat sandwich if its still low another five pieces of hard candy wait 15 minutes checkagain.if its up to normal eat a half sandwich of meat and bread or peanut butter and bread. then you should be good til breakfast time., So you also hate that shaking feeling? Your take please.

I am the only one in my family who is NOT diabetic. All my siblings and all their children, my cousins and their children, my aunts and uncles are all diabetic. So I know a little about what you are saying. I know America uses a different scale of testing blood sugar. Our "normal" range is 3.6 - 5.8. Here they tend to use Pepsi Max to boost a low result. I certainly hope you are feeling much better now and have no serious effects.

The progressively larger babies sometimes is a sign of gestational diabetes. I am glad you did not have any of those complications. Does your doctor say anything about your stomach swelling?

Yes Hatley, I have always been slim. I was painfully thin as a teenager and thankfully kept on a little after every child. After my fifth large son (they were 10lb 8oz - 13lb) I was a nice, normal size and I stayed that way until about twelve months ago when my tummy started swelling. It is NOT what I eat and I can't seem to get rid of it. Maybe it is just a sign of age. My blood sugar is 4.8 so it is just perfect.

hi cloudwatcher I would bet you are the slimmest one in your family. For a lot of type 2s who have inherited it if they would have kept themselves slim or at least at normal body weight they might well have missed becoming diabetic. lets see here my doctor says between 90 and 140 is where he wants me to stay, sometimes I do not quite stay below 140 but often go below 90 too bad shame on me. I am fine now and intend to stay that way tonight.

Hi neildc I keep telling anyone who is not diabetic but has family who are, keep from getting fat,, and get plenty of exercise. Overweight is usually the biggest cause of type 2 for people who have put on some pounds and have not exercised much.the fat prevents the cells from takiing in insulin , and the insulin would have herded the needed sugar into the cells of your muscles so now you have sugar floating around in the blood stream with too much sugar so that causes side effects of diabetes. Hope your child does not have it but even if he or she does its not the horrid killer of the past as we have a slew of medications besides insulin to treat diabetes and tons of education on how to live to a ripe old age with diabetes.

hi neildc oh my you have a good point there, the American Diabetes Asso. has brought up that point here in the US, as we also have poor families but am not sure what they are really doing about it. We Americans tend to be so insular, and forget we are reaching out to mylotters from all over the globe. I wonder if there are any resources to help poor families where you are to get the things they need to care for their diabetics? Its indeed sad with all the technology we have so many people cannot use it because they are poor. without medicare and my insurance I would be in the same situation.

well you better take better care my friend. you know how much we all love you here. i havent had that but i do have something called hyperglycemia, where im required to take something to boost my sugar level if i feel faint. i was dating a guy for a while that had the same diabetis as yours i think. he had to test his level all the time and was very careful with it. he took shots before every meal. do you have to do that? he had me carry a red shot vial around with me in case something happened he said that i should give him it right away if he wasnt responding to me. luckily i never had to use it. he broke up with me after 9 mths of asking me to marry him because he said i couldnt get over my late hubby. oh well. anyway, please take care..ok?

hi kitty I am fine now, just went a bit too long without eating and had to pay for it. I think its still better than having it too high as too high will play havoc with so many parts of your body, eyes and heart come to my mind first. So I must do a bit better job of keeping my blood sugar level.

I get a bit shaky sometimes, always have, especially if I have had a cold and then I get back to exercising a bit too quickly afterwards . I thought mine was blood sugar related but someone on a running forum said they had the same thing and it was iron deficiency which seems quite likely in my case as I find that eating raisins help it. Chocolate does too but not just sugar on its own. When I was expecting, I had a blood test and it was close but not enough to be diabetic. I was given iron tablets then. One of our friends has just found out he has it . His wife already has it so they are quite well up on procedure. Take care..pandaeyes

hi pandgeyes sounds like anemia, I have it too, and did not know til I was sent to a kidney doctor because I showed some loss of kidney function. he pointed out that my blood tests showed I was anemic so now take iron every day. for prediabetes its wise to be sure to keep your'weight normal as most type two diabetics gained a lot of weight and triggered full blown diabetes. So I go around telling people do not gain a lot of weight as that will trigger diabetes, keep slim and get some exercise. maybe I will save a few people f rom getting diabetes. he he.

I am not diabetic, and do not want to be, although people in my family are being diagnosed lately. I do hate it though when my body "runs out of fuel" I do not test for sugars, but I do make sure I eat lean protein or drink a glass of milk if I am shaky.(Low fat milk). I am glad you monitor and maintain yourself so well. I wonder if reading about the cheeses caused you to secrete extra insulin and have a sugar low?

hi garden gerty yes you might have something there, I was reading about those cheeses then all of a sudden I was really shaking and my tummy was rumbling too. I learned that if I take a snack about 8 p.m then I am fine, so am going that way from now on. something light but with protein in it to make it last.

Hi Hatley~ I hope by now you are feeling alot better! I have two very close friends that are diabetic so I do know a bit about the "rules". My next door neighbor is an Insulin Diabetic, and don't know what type he is exactly! I do know that he has gone into diabetic shock and been taken out in an ambulance quite a few times throughout the years. I worry about him because now he lives alone. Before he lived with his mom and then his girlfriend so there was usually someone there if it happened. Now he has no one there if he goes into diabetic shock! I am quite fond of him and have known him for 30 years now and he is a very private person, but I still worry and care alot about him, but don't want to invade his privacy! He takes care of himself the best he can! He has been a diabetic all his life, since he was 2 years old! That is very sad! His mom told me they didn't think he would even make it to grow up and now he is 48 years old! So, I do know alot about living with diabetes. My girlfriend is also diabetic and watches her blood levels very carefully too! So, I have gone through alot of learning with the both of them! I hope that you are ok and continue to be. I know how difficult it is to have to keep watching and trying to contro your blood sugar! Stay well Hatley, Hugs, Opal

hi opal I am so glad I have type 2 non insulin dependent so all I need to do is eat some candy or drink orange juice then have a light snack., 'those who are insulin dependent can go into insulin shock so easily and must be so careful to eat something when needed, as thats the key to preventing low blood sugar in the first place.

I don't . Sorry to hear your health Hatley. But my grand mother is diabetic. she often hungry, she beat it with eating oatmeal twice or third time a day. she can maintain the blood sugar with it. I know the taste is not delicious at all and kind of boring to eat it everyday. I eat it too even i am not diabetic, cause my doctor said that if i have one of my family diabetic, i can get it too. so i eat it to prevent it. Maybe you can try sometimes, take care

Numerous times I have been tested for diabetes because I have a complaint of frequency of going to the toilet, which is one of the symptoms of diabetes, but in every case I have been given the all clear, naturally it's a good result, however I've never been able to get on top of the complaint I have, the GP and consultants think it's nerves and anxiety related and that is much more complex when it's a mental problem than a physical to remedy. Take care of yourself my dear friend.

hi wolfie yes often nerves will do that to you. if I have to wait for something for quite awhile invaribly I will have to go two or three times. and its not because of my diabetes either, just plain nerves.

Hello freind, I am not a diabetic till now, but my parents are. My father do complain sometimes that he feels as if something inside is shivering. He is on Insulin injections twice a day. My mom is also a diabetic but she really checks what she eats.Try to have a brisk walk twice a day, it really helps! And never forget to get your meds, Wish you all the very best! Bodhi

hi bodhisatya please keep slim and get some exercise each day and you may well avoid becoming diabetic as overweight prevents the cells from taking in insulin and the sugar they need to keep your body going.sugar floating free in the blood does bad things to your body if there is too much and your cells cannot take it up like they are supposed to. I know exercise is really 'important for a diabetic.

Kept your weight at a normal level and do not eat a lot of sweet gooey stuff and you can avoid getting diabetes, also do exercise as thats also a good preventative.
