I think the best kind of dog is a Shetland Sheepdog, I have one named Lucky (cliche, I know) but they are super friendly, great around kids, very smart, cute, and cuddly! They are very easy to train and can be great watch dogs as well.

No, Lassie was a collie. The Shetland Sheepdog looks alot like a collie but is much smaller.

They do not come in Blue , however if you want Blue they have a dog that is a little bit bigger than a mini poodle about 15-18 inches at the shoulders called a Kerry Blue Terrior. They don't shed are as tough as nails and r deep blue. However they are a terrior.

I love all types of dogs, but my favorite are Huskies. I love their size and the ones with the blue colored eyes.
But it basically comes down to personality. When I was younger I had a German shepherd that was extremely smart and protective. When we let him loose in the park and we hid from him he would look for you in panic. If you acted like you wanted to punish your child (we often teased him with that) he would bark at you and lie down on the child, so you would end up hitting him.
Dogs are amazing.

Only you will be able to pick the right dog for yourself. I recommend going on the site puppyfind.com, looking at all of the purebred dogs there and then going to the pound to see what they have.
Some breeds you may want to consider would be a beagle, a papillion, a carin terrier, a yorkie, a poodle or a bassett hound. This is a range of dogs to start with but it will depend on how much time you have for grooming and exercising as to which one would be exactly right for you.

I would suggest you do a search online and read about the different breeds out there. Then you can decide for yourself which breed to get.You have to like the breed,it doesn't matter what someone else may like.I do know chihauhaus are a terrible breed,my mother has one,and the breed is very mean.Good luck to you!
