Spent the weekend in hospital!

On Friday morning I woke up and couldn't breathe very well. I had had a cold for about a week and it had turned into a nasty cough. I went to the doctors and told them i couldn't breathe. I had to wait for an hour in the waiting room before I was seen because some drug addict had a seizure in the waiting room. When I eventually got in, the doctor put me on the nebuliser, sent me to get xrays and gave me a prescription for Ventolin and antibiotics. The ventolin didn't do anything for my breathing so I drove myself to hospital. They admitted me straight away and told me my oxygen levels were only at 90%. I only got out today and I still don't feel crash hot but I am recovering. I am angry that the local doctor didn't send me to hospital or even give me oxygen. I should have just gone straight to the hospital. Have you ever been disappointed in what your doctor has told you and seeked a second opinion?

I am sorry to hear that you have been so poorly, but at least you are on the mend now! I have been disappointed in a doctor once. When my son was about 4 years old he started having problems with his nose, and it started to smell. I took him to see the doctor and she prescribed him antibiotics for an infection, I thought this would be the end of it but it was not. The antibiotics did not work and the smell from his nose became worse, so bad in fact that I took him out of school. I was convinced that he had something up his nose and took him back to the doctors and told her what I thought. She did not agree, she took a swab from his nose and put him on yet more antibiotics for an infection. As she was the doctor I took what she said to be true, but still I was not happy, and neither was my son, his nose was smelling worse by the day, I could hardly bear having him near me it was that bad. I took a torch and shone it up his nose, there, I could see something I was sure of it. So I rang the doctors again and asked to see a different doctor, I took my son in and told the new doctor everything, by this time it was going on over 2 weeks. He looked up my sons records, the swab had come back as nothing showing and so he did what I had done, took a light and looked up his nose and yes he said there is definately something up there! He called the nurse in and had her look and she spotted it straight away, and they both could not believe that the other doctor had not spotted it! Well the end of the story was that my son had to go to the hospital and they pulled out a piece of black foam an inch in length, as soon as that was pulled out the smell went immediately. And no, I have not got a clue how that foam got up there or where it had come from!

Oh that's not good hun, I'd be really mad at your doctor for not picking this up. I hope you are feeling a lot better soon. I have had to seek a second opinion a couple of time, mainly because of my treatment for my perennial back problems and arthritis. My previous doctor was a total waste of space and I finally went to a second GP who was on the ball and took action immediately. She referred me to a specialist straight away and now I am receiving the correct medication and treatment. I can honestly say that my previous doctor simply didn't listen to what I had to say, nor was she particularly interested in getting me the right treatment.

yes.i had a chronic problem that ended up in life saving surgery 29 years later. not only did i get a second opinion,i got a 3rd,4th,5th and finally sixth. i was told "it would go away" and only got progressively worse.i am well now,but it took 6 doctors to get the right diagnosis. always get those second opinions.

Sorry you´ve been sick Coffeeshot, and hope you are back on your feet and feeling fine very quickly. Quite a few years ago I suffered with problems swallowing. I went to the doctor and was prescribed with anti depressants for post natal depression. I was half way home before it struck me that there was no way this complaint was related to post natal depression in the slightest. I tore that prescription up, took a second opinion and ended up having a fairly major op for a condition which left untreated could have become life threatening.

Yes, my doctor doesn't seem to take in my concerns about my health and weight. When I was sick, couldn't keep my eyes open, sweating profusely, naseated, bad thing is I was driving from relatives on Thanksgiving, had to keep stopping to vomit (sorry) I ended up going straight to ER. Could you believe they didn't call a relative to take me home and knowing I drove in that condition there... Then there are others times, just the ER doctors are just as bad as family physician, they couldn't find anything wrong and kept acting like I was making things up!!! Sorry, but I'm not going to fake something to go the doctor or hospital, thats not fun to me. We have had some friends that were having heart attacks and the doctors sent them home, then later that night they were lifelined to a major nearby hospital. Its terrible how they are not doing their jobs anymore and not "listening" to us. If I were you, go to ER if anything comes up or you feel worse. I hope to hear you are better in a few days...take care and relax/rest.

that didn't happen nice to you i wish you are quite well now.. i often had to go to doctor due to my periodical cough. actually my old doctor was not good and i was unsatisfied with him which lead to a second thought in my mind for which i concerned one of my family member who referred me to a specialist. and i am quite satisfied now.

Asthma can be very nasty. It needs careful observation and treatment. I assume thats what your cold had turned into. Last year I wasnt very happy with one Doctor that I took my daughter too. She had a lot of pain her in ovaries. At first the Doctor didnt even know what the pain was. He sent her for an ultrasound. When that showed a cyst on her ovary, he said that nothing could be done about it, and he didnt know of pain killers that would work. I took her to another Doctor, who knew exactly what treatment to use. It worked very quickly, so she had all the pain for 2 weeks because the first Doctor didnt know what to do.

I've been pretty happy with my doc, but I gotta say that I took Maggiepie to the hospital once and they released her, the next morning I was running her over to my mom's because my brother was there with his daughter's nebulizer (this was before she got her own) and did 2 treatments before we could get her into her doctor, who called the hospital to admit her this time!

Where I live, about the only second-opinion that you can seek is thru the ER..there is an absolute shortage of Drs. ER or a Walk-in Clinic! I am sorry, your Dr. let you down, but glad the ER stepped in with proper care and treatment! One thing that I have learned, tho..is to question the credentials of your Dr., as a few years ago, the new DR. arrived here, on the Island...after going, several times to the ER, after his diagnosis...I found out he was a Clinician..with many years professionally in England. Same doctrines, degrees as your average Dr., but had spent all his training as a Clinician...and NO personal contact with patients. No diagnostic abilities in personal contact..only when all the data had been fed to him! He is a much better Dr. NOW! Please take care...lie low...and get well soon. Cheers!

I'm sorry to hear you had to go through all that and hope you're fully recovered soon. We've had a number of different GPs at our surgery over the years and most of them have been great. there were a few that really didnt inspire confidence... like the one who asked me at my medication review what I was taking a particular tablet for because he'd never heard of it... and I'd been taking it for over 2 years! I just asked to see the other doctor next time.

Hi coffeeshot, I am so sorry you had all that trouble, clearly this local doctor didn't even bother to check you out to check you out properly, I have a very good doctor and she always make sure that I have enough inhalers, my doctor is brilliant. Tamara

People often get mad at their doctor for doing something wrong but when you think about it, arent they human? Everyone makes mistakes, yes your doctor is supposed to know what he's doing. But the doctor acts out of his personal experience and judgement. Some doctors do tend to not listen even if someone says something. I remember my aunt was really sick, she went to the doctor and asked for medicine and the doctor told her to go home and rest instead. She did. Next day she was worse and went back there and he told her to go home once again.. Third day she was really sick and my mother who worked as a nurse could see that she needed some kind of medicine, she went down to the doctor and cursed him out for not giving her anything, a few hours later she got the medicine but the doctor was really mad, like he didnt want to admit he was wrong. A few days after that my aunt was fine. Some doctors just have too much pride.

I don't trust local doctors, their skills are poor and cann't judge what wrong with you. So,if not necessary,I will not go to hospital. Try to exercise everyday, and keep a good health level. Our body is a strong balance enviroment, and sometimes it can self-recover. Hope it help you. Good Luck.
