Acai Berry is the fruit of a palm tree. It is used by indigenous peoples as a major part of their diet and, in fact, there are concerns that the recent big demand in the West for this product is endangering the diet and lifestyles of the people who depend on it for food. It is probably as safe to use as any berry juice but it is much more expensive than products which contain a comparable amount of antioxidants, such as grapes, blueberries and cranberries (grapes and blueberries actually contain more polyphenols than acai). The health claims and, in particular, the weight loss claims do not appear to be substantiated by any reliable scientific evidence: http://www.quackwatch.com/01QuackeryRelatedTopics/PhonyAds/acai.html Unfortunately, many people have a 'body image' which differs substantially from how others see them. For a female of 5' 11", the 'ideal weight' range is between 134 and 170 pounds, so she is definitely toward the lower end of her ideal weight. I suggest that you show her the Quackwatch page above and also the 'ideal weight' calculator. Tell her that taking Acai Berry supplements are likely to be a complete waste of money and suggest that, if she wants to spend money, it would be better to spend it on therapy to improve her self-perception of her body image!

The calculator I used is at: http://www.brianmac.co.uk/idealw.htm but there are many others on the Internet and all are based on the same data and calculations. The fairly wide range is because there are different body types (light and heavy framed) and different muscular types as well (muscle weighs more than fat).

Acai berry is an herb and I believe that it is competely safe. I don't think that your friend needs to lose weight either. As women, we have such a poor self image. I don't think that I've ever met a woman who is completely happy with her body. It sounds like your friend has self esteem problems. Honestly, all that you can do is sit down and talk to her. I'm sure that I'm much older than you are and I struggled with self esteem issues for almost 50 years. I finally overcame them by first writing a list of things that I have to be grateful for every day and by clearly defining who I really wanted to be and then I set about turning myself into that person. Surprisingly, when I created that definition, I learned that very little of it had to do with appearance. Most of it was internal and that was something that I could change. I'm finally at peace with myself and comfortable in my own skin. I wish that I was 20 lbs thinner but I don't obsess over it any more.

At 5'11" and 138 lbs, I'd say she was skinny. That's about what I weigh, and I'm only 5'1"! I guess she has one of those "fat" mirrors... as opposed to those who have "skinny" mirrors and end up dressing inappropriately...

Hi Raydene, The Acai Berry is a natural way of slimming and aids the bodies digestion to speed up..but to me your friend sounds like she is on the verge of bulmia...the only way she can be helped is through couselling but that is something she would need to 'want' to do-tell before taking the Acao Berry to seek medical advice about it, then the dr will be able to take over form there-hopefully- LoLo xoxo

Last year I came across a writing project about Acai berry and its goodness. This food supplement is safe because this is naturally made and no chemical formulation, this is formulated through the ingredients of nature. Acai berry is a fruit originated in the Amazon rainforest of Brazil, this is highly hailed as a powerful fruit loaded with vitamins and minerals. Since this is highly perishable, the fruit cannot be exported, so manufacturers decided to process the fruit into different supplements. Some of the benefits of this supplement are losing weight, help aid proper digestion and prevent constipation and help protects from chronic illnesses because of its very high content of antioxidants called anthocyanins and polyphenols. Your friend maybe overdo it, she should not abused it because even though this is safe, as most of the supplements, this may have a bad effect to her over all health, well as the saying goes: anything in excess is bad. So try to advise your friend to stick to the number of dosage and follow the instructions. Good luck!
