hitachi tv was our first manual tv in 1980s. I remember how hard at that time manually switching to a desired channel.

We got our first TV in 1955. It was, of course, black and white. Screen was about 15 inches. It had two knobs: one for on/off/volume, and the other for changing channels. We lived close enough to a large city that we received three channels.

We had a TV about the same time. Sets in those days id have more controls though. You had the horizontal and vertical holds. I remember those because they were always going out. The there was also the contrast and darkness knobs. The other fun in those days was when tubes would blow out a my father had to try and guess which one it was, go to a store with a tester to test the suspects, and buy a replacement. We lived in North Jersey so we got channels 2(CBS), 4(NBC), 5(ind.), 7(ABC), 9(ind.), 11(ind.), and 13(ind.). As a kid that was a lot of TV for me. But it was before infomercials.

Horizontal and vertical were on the back of the set. After we had it a few years, it developed a tendency to roll. Adjust from the back of the set and it was fine--until it did it again. Tubes were an interesting puzzle, but at least it was possible you could fix your own set. You can't do that today. I still fix my own stuff whenever I can. I have repaired the washing machine, the dishwasher, and some other appliances. Had to call a repairman for the refrigerator once. I could not figure out what the problem was. He replaced a solenoid and fixed it. I didn't even know it had a solenoid.

I do not remember the brand, but we had a black and white tv. We also had one of the big ones that was in a wood console. This was in the early 1970's, so it was big and bulky. Of course remotes we not invented then, so you had to get up and change the channel. But you only had 4 channels to worry about, ABC, CBS, NBC and PBS.
