What stops you from starting a discussion?

There are times when you want to start a good discussion, but something holds you back.Is that a fear of getting zero responses? You know, sometimes I browse discussions and find some really nice topics I would like to start myself, but these topics don't seem very popular here.
What about you? Would this fact stop you from creating a discussion?

Time is the only thing that stops me starting more discussion. I don't usually start one if I know that I am not going to be on to comment immediately on the responses that it might receive.
I have a topic that I have not seen mentioned here yet and I am very curious to post it but I am not free until the week-end so it must wait until then.
If a topic doesn't seem popular, could it be that it was not set out in a way that others were enticed into responding? The title and the manner in which a topic is consturcted makes a lot of difference.

Yes, I do have this fear of people judging my discussions that I start. I wouldn't like to have all my discussion starting efforts go to waste when no one even responds to them. lol. Plus it really is hard to think up a really nice and interesting discussion that someone would reply to.

Yes, especially when you're trying not to repeat old discussions.

I've started a few, only to delete them without posting. Usually it's because the thought didn't quite gel for me or the topic was too personal or something. I don't give a darn whether it's a popular category or not. If it's on my mind, I'll usually post it anyway.

I just start one and hope for the best, I generally write for myself anyway and share my thought with all of you. If what ever I am thinking doesn't appeal to you that is just the way it is.

I think you have this wrong, I beg, borrow and steal from the news to make many of my discussions. The most honest I am is in how I react to the situations. Remember this is a virtual world on mylot not the real world. When I answer a
discussion I do not devalue it if it is made up, in fact I am only interested in the discussion it's self and within it's framework try to give an honest answer.

I like your discussions, I think they all are about real life, real feelings and real experiences. You don't write fake stories to get attention.

Most of the reason that keep me holding on not to start a discussion is...i can't find the right words to write on.
When i am not in front of my laptop, there's a lot of topic that keeps on my head and i think would make a good topic.
The problem is,when it's time for me to do,or i am in front of my laptop already,it seems that i am running out of words and can't find the right to write on.
That's the most common reason why some good topics were left unwritten from my side.

A digital voice recorder would help you.You just lay on your bed and start thinking loud. Then you listen to your own ideas and start writing.

Not necessarily. I sometimes might be somewhat afraid that I won't get any responses, but if it's about something that I really want to know about or if I have a question I need answered, then I'll go ahead and start a discussion on it. Usually, the MyLot community is extremely active, and will respond in some way...I think I have had one discussion, though, that hasn't gotten any responses- that was kinda depressing. .

Exactly, and you feel even more depressed when you really need an answer and you don't get it.I guess it's important to choose right tags and right time.

I never never think if my discussion will get zero response or many responses...never have i started a discussion with that though...if i have something to write i will write it and if i don't have anything to write i will not write anything meaningless...nothing can stop me if i want and i think that is right to write here

Hi, silvercoin. My reason for not starting discussions is because I am afraid of getting so many responses that I may not be able to answer all of them. It may take some time to reply back to many discussions. And also, I may hold back because, I may have asked the question already that I want to discuss about... This could be another reason as well. I don't start a discussion just because the topics at myLot don't seem popular here. I never do that. I have actually seen many topics that are interesting to discuss on. And myLot constantly adds new topics to the list too.

What can be worse than a discussion with 0 responses?
A discussion with 100 responses! When you're not able to comment back anymore.Ok,I'm happy for you, seems that you don't have unnecessary fears.

if i want to start my own topic it really doesnt bother me if no one responded it since im here to earn and to practice my english in written. and even if someone responded i still did not get any earnings from them. the reason that stop me is i couldnt think of any topic, i can have an idea but i couldn't explain it further. i dont want to start with only a one liner content coz its not counted for my earnings so i need to expand it more.

I really don't mind about getting zero responses.
It takes only a little while to write a discussion stater so if no one wants to discuss it, it was hardly a time hogger.
I can see why some discussions don't ever get answered.
If I think of something to discuss, I save it in a file and then I can use that to help me when I want to post one.
I try to steer away from things like religion or politics as starters as people sometimes take offense so in that case I would just not post them.

These two subjects cause me headaches. It doesn't matter if you discuss them here or in real life. The reaction is same: people get angry and want to prove you're wrong.I don't remember when was the last time I discussed politics or religion.

The reason why I don't post many discussions is because I can't think of anything to write about. I know though that over time I will think of more and more things to write about. In fact I really love writing them and talking to people, I just can't seem to think of anything. So I just tend to go onto other people's discussions and let them do the thinking about the main topic and just give my input. =P

Oh yes I am defiantly a writer, I have loads of unfinished stories written on my computer in text files. I start them and forget about them and never finish them, and when I think about them I can never be bothered to keep writing in them, I have a very short attention lol. I do love to write though, its nice to get your thoughts out. I love making story's because I get to make my own world, and I can be the one to choose what happens. =P

I generally take inspiration from life for a discussion topic. I don't start that many discussions though, rather I tend to respond to others. I've never really worried too much about whether I get loads of responses to a discussion I have posted, it's nice when you do get a lot of responses though.

hi silvercoin sometimes the topics that you think do not seem popular
here may lead you to discuss something that really will appeal to a
number of people. I would let this fact spur me on to make something
so appealing to most anyone they will have to at least read it
and maybe be interested in it.Two years ago in the summer I came down with the irritating agitating horrid shingles and I used that as a topic and thought well maybe a few will respond and I got a lot of responses at a number of people had had the things or knew of someone or had relatives that had had them. So you do not know unless you really try something.

Yeah, I agree on that. What if I'm too critical about my topic?
Let the people judge if it's boring or not.

For me it's debating whether or not the topic is important enough. I feel like I'm wasting my time if I don't truly feel the topic is relevant and can generate meaningful conversation.

it is because I do not have a chance to make it because after I saw a variety of interesting discussion, I just put my time just to respond to the discussion of others. I doubt myself to make a good discussion, it stopped me to make it again.

I don't start all that many discussions, because I have a hard time coming up wht a good topic. I think that is what really stops me. You are right, though, I wouldn't want to start one and get zero responses, azs ot me I would be wasting my time even starting it. That is always in the back fo my mine, but I am so thankful that I have not had any without at least one response. It is hard to know though if a topic is going to be interesting enough to get responses. I would much rather post responses to discussions, as it is easier for me, as I don't have to think about what to say, as it just flows out, and the tpic is already there, as I don't have to think about that either. Good luck to you and happy mylotting.

Don't think what others would like, just ask something you want to know..Look what I've done - just had a question and asked it, I didn't thought it would get more than 5 responses.

When i read a related topic of what i'm planning to post, that would surely stop me from starting a discussion i'm thinking would it be ok to have it post though its almost the same conclusion and reaction from people i am expecting for.I really need to look how close the topic with other otherwise i have to think of another topic and forget about my first idea.
Happy myLotting!

Me too, I wouldn't start something that has already been discussed many times before.
