My cellular phone is one of the obsolete model of NOKIA. It's been 7 years in my hand even though if I really wanted to change it, I could but I didn't. Phones with many features like MP3, video cam (higher memory), internet browser, etc...is my dream phone but since I am practical I think it will be useless to buy such things when I can already call and text my friends and family using my old cell phone.
As we look around, different ages got a high-tech cp's on their hands. However, others are just for trends and for showing-off...so sad to hear it. What is your opinion with the cellular phones going out to the market nowadays??

I do share the same outlook of practicality regarding cellphones. I think that most phones now are just for luxury, far even from being practical at all. Technology is supposed to make life easier by making work faster and more efficient but that doesn't seem to be the case now. Some people just can afford to be trendy, well it's their choice. If only we could be more contented.

Just buy what makes you happy not what makes others happy. I have N95 its my dream cellphone. I'm happy because I love photography. And 5 megapixel is what I love most in N98 8G memory.
Before I bought 6600 That my favorite cellphone at that time because of advance camera. Maybe after 5 years again I will buy new cellphone with best features in camera. I don't like to listen to music so for me its not important and even games.
I only like phone with great camera features.

I also have an old phone, very basic but it does the job. I can't really understand half the knobs and whistles on the new phones these days, it seems to be just more to go wrong. They cost a fortune to buy and a fortune to top up, they are more a status symbol than a good old fashion phone.

Thank you for the response...yeah you're right! it just talks what you've got not who you are...every new model of it costs more that the previous but so sensitive and could easily be destroyed like my brother's phone. He spent 10K (brand new) for it but for 4 months of use he must change some parts because it was broken.

Hello baby!
You are right up to an extent that if you can make do with
your old cell phone, there is not any need for buying an expensive
cell phone, specially with those features, which are not of
any use to you. It all depends upon one's requirements and
if one can keep a ceiling on one's needs, it is all the more
better, because there is no end of our wishes.

I would put it as a Luxurious necessity. Especially the 3G phones, which are a luxury but in this day & age is a necessity.

It is like asking yourself a question, why type if you can write; why phone when you can always meet the person and talk face to face. Why use a pen if you can use an inkpot? There are several questions of this kind. We must keep pace with times. Now a day’s people prefer friends who can send or like to receive MMS. What if you wish to browse through your mail and your PC is not at hand. I got rid of my old phones long ago and now I have the latest model. I am living with times, though I am retired. I want to remain in touch with my friends.

Cellphones are becoming a necessity nowadays. I do not feel comfortable walking without it even though I do not use it as often when I am out of the house. I guess the feeling that you cannot be easily contacted makes it really important to us nowadays.
You are right it becomes a luxury when you buy phones that is excessively high tech. Most of the features of it you would not be able to use on your daily tasks everyday. If your phone is still working I guess you need not replaced it unless it already fails and you could not use it for what it is intended for.

I think that the cellular phone is both a luxury and a necessity personally.
I upgraded my phone late last year to a Nokia 5800xm, my phone previous to that I'd had for 3 years, and before that I used to upgrade my phone every year because I like gadgets...so the way I upgrade my phone regularly does make it a luxury.
However my mother is quite ill and she needs to be able to get hold of me so having a cellphone is also essential for me as well.

Maybe some people choose high-tech cell phone just to show off, but i think most people choose the kind according to their specific needs. Simple cell phones are appropriate for old people, and phones with various functions are more popular with young people as they frequently make use of the camera, internet browser and other things. You don't need to be bothered by what kind of cell phone you possess. As long as it meets your daily demand, that's okay. If you dream of getting a high-tech phone, you can save up to buy one. Cell phones are not expensive today.

It's really based on each individual's need. If you're happy with your phone, stay with it. That's one of the reasons why I've changed my phone. Little over 2 years ago, I had a change of poisition at my work. With this new position came more responsibilities, one of them was having to travel a lot more than I used to. I needed a phone with email & internet access. So I went out & bought blackberry. Few month ago, it started acting up so I bought another one. If it wasn't for work, I would've stayed with something very simple.

It's a luxury. Necessities are things you can't live without. That would be food, water, shelter, and air.
I did without a cell phone for ages, and I know it's amazing, but I got along just fine.
People come here from other countries, and they get here with nothing. Yet they are able to work, eat, grow, and survive just fine until they are able to afford the luxury of a cell phone.

I see my phone is a need. I did away with the land line service thinking it redicoulous to be paying for three phones when my partner and I use our cell phones for everything. Even when we had it, people knew to call us on our cell phones. So I got rid of the land line to save money. Now, all we have or cell phones and we use them for anything and everything.
I have internet, but I use a laptop for that. So I don't need it on my phone.

During the late 90s and early 2000s, having a mobile phone is just a luxury. It's like a social status that says you belong to the hip and upper class society because you have a mobile phone. Now, it is a necessity. Even with all the ways of communication available now plus all the social networking that we do, we still can't leave home without our mobile phone.

I think high end cellular phones are for luxury these days because we get to use it with a lot of features curled in one. Its nice to have a mobile phone with lots of features but I guess it isn't necessary because for me mobile phones are for emergency use only. They don't have to upgrade it a lot especially those who costs hundreds of dollars.
On the other hand, having a high end phone also saves us from buying another item because its already complete with music stuff and cameras.

You are absolutely right. It is just a necessity. No matter what features are put into it ,we are only going to use the phone to text and to speak over the phone. For certain important people they would need the feature of the internet of emails to respond quickly to important transactions. But basically all hi fi features would get bored out of the features and will ultimately end up calling and texting.
