When I was in grade school I HATED school lunch! Everyday from first grade to sixth grade I brought my lunch. Peanut butter and Jelly everyday. Except when my mom would try to spice it up and put peanut butter and fluff. lol I never, ever bought school lunch. Not even a milk. It smelled funny so I wanted no part of it. I am a very picky person so there was no way I was going to eat that with the way it smelled. lol How about you? Did you bring or buy? If you bought what was your favorite meal? If you brought your lunch, what did you like to bring the most? dl

I did a little bit of both and maybe ate both lunches lol. When I bought lunch I had to sneak off campus and go to the burger joint down the street or go to McDonald's and get the whole clan lunch. The cafeteria manager was a caterer and I knew she knew how to cook, so when she was assigned to my school permantly I ate school lunch all the time lol.

Hi dloveli!
It actually depended on my appetite. Sometimes, if I liked the food at home, I would bring lunch to school. And it totally saved a lot of money on my part. But at times, like when my mom didn't cook, I bought food from the cafeteria. there were a lot of choices, and I usually took a long time deciding what to buy. But I think majority of my lunches in school were from home.
As for the past few months (since December), I've enjoyed free lunch at work! So, I had a choice of eating the free lunch (we could order at a restaurant, but the office would foot the bill), or bringing our own lunch. But where's the fun when the lunch is free? It's an offer you simply can't refuse! This was because we had to play "nanny" to our students who were kids.

You seem to have had the best of both worlds. I am very picky. I still call my mom and ask her what I like when I go to restaurants. I dont eat cheese, any kind of white sauce, boxed potatoes, coldcuts after the first day, etc. So you see how bad it was for my mom. Now you get free lunch? You seem to have all the luck!Happy Eating. dl

Ooops. You really are a picky eater! I can't imagine myself in your place, as I have never experienced that kind of dilemma.
I think my luck just ran out. I just remembered that my free lunch is ending this week. My students are going back to Korea already. OH no!

From grade 1 to grade 6, I walked home for lunch every day (and got to watch The Flintstones while I ate LOL). If you were a "walker," you were not allowed to eat at school - even in the winter. Some days, I remember the weather was so bad that, by the time I managed to get home for lunch, the time was almost over. My mom would keep me at home and I didn't go back for the afternoon. Once I got to high school, I mostly brought a lunch from home (sandwich or salad, fruit, veggies, dessert...). We were a one-income family and my parents couldn't really afford to be giving us lunch money too, when they had already purchased groceries for the week. One of the most popular lunches at my high school was a Hamburger Plate... but all the students just referred to it as "a plate"... it was hamburger patties and french fries with gravy over the top. Obviously, schools weren't focused on quality food back then LOL

At first, I was bringing lunch from home. As Filipinos, our staple lunch would be rice plus one or two viands. My classes always started at 7 am. By noon, the rice would be somewhat moist and the viand(s) would be sort of dry. I disliked it very much because of the taste really differs a lot from a freshly cooked meal. Since then, I bought food from school. There were a lot of choices. I would choose chicken, noodles, barbecue, pizza, french fries, veggies, fish, shrimp, burger, hotdog, and so on. I would also sometimes go for dessert with the sweets shop. I guess our school canteen was all right because we had many choices.

I always did a variety of the two when I was in school. There were some school lunches that I liked to eat but there just as many things that they served that I would have touched with a ten foot pole.
When I took my lunch to school, I liked to take baby carrots, a peanut butter and jelly sandwich, a cup of pudding and some fruit salad. I also always took a juice box to have to drink.

The thing about school lunch is that is always smelled funny. The smell was nauseating and was the same for everything. All meals smelled exactly the same. I took peanut butter and jelly, a juicie, and usually either a fruit or a baked good from my mom. Honestly I never really ate much of the sandwich it always got squished. I hate smashed PB&J.lol Happy MyLotting. dl

I did none of the two things you mentioned. I used to eat at home after coming back from school. I do not have complains about school food as there was no such facility.

what time did you come home from school? You went the entire day without food? You must have been starved. It depends if school was an 7 hour day, that's too long for a kid to go without food. It gives you energy. If its only half a day, then that's okay. dl

Hi dl. When I was in grade school, at least up until the 3rd or 4th grade, I'd bring a lunch to school everyday. It was just the thing to do. Once 5th grade hit I started buying lunches. It was supposedly more cool than bringing your own lunch once you were one of the big kids. How'd I know all this? I had a big sister who told me these things! LOL
I don't remember what my favorite lunch was when I brought it. However, my favorite bought lunch was from Round Table Pizza!
Happy mylotting!

During my school days I never had a school dinner. I always took a packed lunch and that way I could have the food to eat that I liked. My mom packed some lovely things for me to enjoy eating. When I was at primary school the school dinners didn't look all that great. By the time I reached secondary school the school dinners were more healthy. I still chose to have a packed lunch. I am a vegan these days. In my school days I was a vegetarian. I have always been a picky eater. I liked to eat nutty bars and some fruit bars. I always had a drink of pure juice in my packed lunches.

it really depended.most of the time bag lunch, once in a while school lunch.
school lunches were plain NASTY tho.always cold unless it was supposed to be.
that milk did smell!i don't know what was up with that.i think it was the carton.
i used to laugh at the kids who'd brag about their snack pack, and then break the key off.(this was the 70's,no easy open).ha ha,no snack pack for you either!

i too used to bring packed lunch from home but it was not because i disliked the school food. i liked them. it was just that i liked my packed lunch even more:P and to save my money.
at the same time, it helped me save time from queuing up at the food stalls. i didn't have much time to eat as i was on prefect duty and i had to be able to eat fast, which i was not, being a slow and fussy eater.
my packed lunch consisted of just one thing. bread and butter. that was all, loved it so much even i'm not sure why i liked it that much. in fact, i still do now. i don't really like jams and peanut butters all that much with bread. but if there's bread, butter is necessary for me you could say. even my mom was like amazed that i still hadn't gotten tired of it yet.

I also hated to bring packed lunch because I envied my classmates who had lots of money to buy in the canteen. I only have spare money to buy a soda. I had no choice but to eat whatever my mom prepared for me because even at a young age, my parents would always tell us not to waste anything especially food and money. So I did not care whether I was the only girl who had packed lunch as long as I have food and I'm not starving, I'm good with that.

OMG peanut butter and jelly sandwich everyday! I’m sure if the companies knew, you’d have become their star brand ambassador by now and made pots of money LOL
Our school didn’t have any canteen facility so I had to take lunch from home regularly…very simple stuff like sandwich or fruits or cakes and such. However, my son’s school has canteen facility and the food is good…I’ve been to his school quite a few times and have had from the canteen…also the teachers buy food from the canteen so the quality and hygiene part is OK but even then, I prefer his carrying home cooked food. I’ll usually make sandwich or noodles or French toast or stuffed omelets and some fruits for his lunch…I allow him to buy canteen food only once a week.

I remember in my school days i used to bring from home, we were only supplied two slice of bread and it too little so we bring from home. My favourite was bread (Roti) and fried Egg (omlet). School days were real fun and i remember we kids share the tiffen box so that we get different taste.

I don't remember having a pack lunch at school. Every morning I eat breakfast at home and I do not pack a lunch for break at school, i buy at school canteen. I bring juice sometimes or fruits but I do not remember bringing pack lunch. I do bring on one time whole camping before in gradeschool, but that was a camping. the reason I do not want to bring food, because when I was young I was shy if my fellow student will criticize my pack lunch, as some of the bullies do it on some students and I don't want to bring heavy bags.

our school is very near from the house, when i was in the elementary and high school. so it will only take a few minutes of walk and you will be there. and that is the reason i eat lunch at home. we never bring foods from from but we buy snacks from the canteen within the campus or outside.

We had school lunch that I hated. However, that is what I had to eat. I only ate what I liked which is probably the reason I have been thin all my life, because there was not to much that I liked at all. They use to make sandwiches that were disgusting like Grape jelly with cream cheese. I never understood that combination. My favorite sandwich was just plain peanut butter on white bread. My favorite soup was pea soup, I couldn't stand the tomato soup. These are the lunches I remember and really can't think of what else we were served. We were not lucky to have pizza or burgers like they have now.
