Charge for advertising?

If approached by someone asking you if they could purchase some advertising space on your blog, how much would you/could you realistically charge them? Also how the charge work? Monthly, yearly? And how would you go about getting the money as I would be wary of giving bank details in case of it being a con. So paypal? Cheque? Any thoughts?
