Not at all, the things in desktop are just icons(images) that are referring to a particular location in your disk. The only thing that can slow down your machine is having a lot of programs, most of them running in background

Hi santhosbaala, I think you're referring to your shortcut program icons..How about the files and some execute files you save in your desktop.. Many users still save their files on their desktop because its the most easier to browse and see every time you open your computer.. Have you observe this? especially if the user is not a computer literate person...

@ pals101 Yes, you are right. My sister too stores some of the files in desktop. It makes the system very slower.I just have some two shortcuts in my desktop. Now it is better. And also saving the files in the local drive , I mean where we install the OS ..is not safe...It also reduces the virtual memory and takes more time to load or reduce the performances.

Yeah,, it consumes memory.. also desktop background consumes memory on your pc.. making it slower.. Its advisable to have no background if you have a low memory on your computer...

Icons on the deskptop doesn't really affects the speed of your pc. It just untidy to see all those icons that cluttered in your desktop. But in my own desktop on don't have a single on it because I hide it i am using Rocketdock and put all icons in there. With this my desktop looks beautiful no icons that blocks my desktop wallpaper view.

It depends of the amount of RAM you have, if you have enough memory the icon number in desktop doesn't affect the performance, there are several things that really affects the performance of the whole system, for example the processes running in the background, if there are much of them the performance decrease to much...

yes you are right. every time you boot the PC it has to lead all content of the desktop. So more items on desktop slower will be booting. Every time u display desktop same thing apply. I Was aware of it.

your solution: open run commandtype systemconfig.sisand customise your startup option and remove the software which you dont want to run at startup as well as exrtra services which you dont need!! try this best of luck!

I do not take the amount of icons in your desktop will slow down the computer. I am not an expert but I have noticed that what affects the performance is the amount of programs running at one time. Also the amount of applications that you run on start up will definitely slow down your start up. So in my case, I usually cancel some start ups that are not needed so as to improve the performance upon turning on my computer. With respect to the icons, they are just short cuts so I do not see any effect for as long as I do not open them.

Example: My desktop - This is a picture screen shot of my current desktop complete with taskbar system tray and desktop icons. The system tray shown on the right is where usuers tend to have the largest problem. Some icons are hidden on my system tray in this photo, but this is an example of what is actually running in the background.

Its what you run in the background that utelizies computer resources and not so much desktop clutter
The amount of the icons on your desktop doesn't really effect the speed. It depends on the icons that you are using and how many actions are being performed. What programs are currently active. I have a lot of various icons on my computer, but has not effected my speed to where its an issue.

yeah it's true that's why I only keep desktop icons on our pc to a maximum of twenty. Maybe because it takes time to load all the icons simultaneously that's why it slows down during the boot
