I was doing abit of research about the recent powerful earthquakes we've been having particularly in the Ring of Fire zone. I was reviewing the US Geological website and they stated that the CHILE earthquake was so darn powerful that it altered the Axis or rotation angle of the Earth!!!
I find that amazing!! How about you? I wonder what it means for weather changes? Also a simply massive section of the Antartica Ice Sheet broke off recently and there is speculation that will also change our ocean temp patterns which in turn impact our weather world wide!!

I´m sure that human beings will not be able to detect any difference in the altered axis of the Earth or the microscopic shortening of the days. But The earthquake itself was so terrible for such a large amount of people that it will take at least 4 years to make up for the losses. It is a long and difficult task we have ahead of us!

Dont worry, I never thought that you had put more importance in one thing that in another. As for earthquakes, there are 2 ways of measuring them. One has to do with nature´s disaster (Richter´s scale) and the other has to do with the impact it has on people (Mercalli scale). Haiti´s earthquake would not have caused great damage in Chile because we are a richer country and build our houses better.
So, as you see, ther are many facts to measure. I think that even now, Haití need´s a lot more help from other countries than Chile. It doesn´t matter if Haitis quake was 7 Richter and ours in the epicentre was 8.9. I´m sure they are worse and know less what to do.
Take care and thanks for your prayers!

i wonder why you only do the review after a month that the chile earth quake happened. i mean, sorry but i guess this incident has been in news for the past few weeks now and theres new news already. i just wonder why theres still lot of people still keep on talking about the earthquake for in fact they can just talk about how to help those people for foods and medical help than the earthquake thing as its already past and done. im not really telling this to you but to other members who keep on repeating the same post again and again so i guess lets just face a new day and help those in need instead of going back to the past.

Hi homeshoppers,I think you mixed the jeans you bought last year with the one you are buying now. It is clear that you don´t read news (no offense meant, some people just don´t). But this is NOT Haití´s quake (which, by the way, is not "past and done" as there are still great problems there). This is another earthquake in another country. It is not even in the same continent. The contry we are talking about now is Chile (a country that is in the far south of South America). Look at a map if you didn´t know the country existed. The earthquake there happened a bit less than a week ago. It is news because it was the 5th biggest in the world.
And guess what! You don´t have to send food or medicine to the place. The food is in the country. There is a problem about how to take it to some places that are isolated now (highways crumbled). For the reason, the President of Chile asked the US to give the help of 25 (twenty five) satellite phones to help out. No food, no medical help. The country has that.
I hope no disaster such as this ever strikes your country. And if it does, I hope the rest of the world helps the country for the time it needs to be helped and not for a couple of hours when it´s front news. Haiti needs help for a long time as its a poor country. I might be wrong, but I thing your country is not too rich, judging from all the people here that want to emigrate.
Chile has an economy that can proyect that to rebuild, they will need 3 to 4 years. That, after a massive earthquake. I want to mention that the most powerful country in the world has not been able (or wanted) to rebuild New Orleans after almost 5 years that have gone by since the Katrina.
Excuse my post, but as you knew so little, I wanted to explain some things.
Take care!

Nothing to do with 1012! The country has had warthquakes always. Do not worry.

I wouldn't worry about 2012 either. I was simply trying to point out the massive level of the earthquake since my local news hasn't really been focusing much on just how strong it was. The earth is constantly changing and we are along for the ride. Sometimes I think that we humans think we are all powerful and yet we cannot predict nor truly protect ourselves against all earthquakes. We need to have a healthy respect for our planet and do our best to be ready for what comes our way.

It's a little amount but still amazing. Not a single earthquake for years has done that. Many say the end of the world is coming, other say a natural disaster on it's course. Or maybe a chain link to the Haiti earthquake

I find it fascinating how the Earth changes and we can do nothing but try to adapt to it. I have read that it's very common for 1 earthquake to start a chain of others as the Earth's plates shift. I pray that the dear people of Chile will get the help they need as soon as possible for all the needs that they have.
It's humbling to realize that while we might spend years and years building and changing the layout of the land to suit our cities and people, the Earth can change it all in a just a few moments.

It has nothing to do with the end of the world. Don´t worry. It is just that Chile lies righy where the tectonic plaque of Nasca goes under the other techtonic plaque. The esrth is not exactky like awell made ball. It´s all broken up.

Indeed you are right, we shall see how one earthquake can set off others and the earth is in many ways a living planet with one change impacting another. And I agree that we should all just do our best to respect our planet and live our daily lives.

I saw the news today about the strong aftershocks that hit. I can't imagine how terrified people must feel with not knowing when the next rumble might come and if they will be able to be safe. I can' imagine what that must feel like as I've never been thru an earthquake. But I have been thru Tornado's passing within less than a mile of my home and I could feel it and had to wonder if it was coming closer. Maybe that's a tiny bit of what they felt. My prayers continue to go out to the wonderful Chilean people.

I had a friend come over and tell me about that now to understand about my friend he is also a believer in the 2012 and that the world is going to end too and i refuse to believe in that one.
Of course with all of these earthquakes all over the world it makes you wonder a little bit doesn't it?
When he told me about that the earthquake changed the axis of the earth i was not quite sure what that meant and he did not know either, but you could probably guess that it would not be a good thing.
When you are having problems in some of the coldest places in the world it does make you wonder what that could do to our weather and what kind of impact that could have on us here, so i guess it remains to be seen as you don't really have much control over the weather you can only do so much about it and just try to be prepared for whatever happens.

I read about this in Yahoo news. It says there that the Earth's axis shifted about an inch. I think it's amazing.

I didn't see it on Yahoo's news, might have to check out their story. I also find it amazing!! I find the earth and all the changes and how the effect each other truly fascinating! One might not think that changes in the earth's crust and layout of the land masses would effect the weather and the ocean temps but it all fits together.

now i feel alarmed when I read this topic. I haven't taken much attention on the news recently and I've known about the Chile's earthquake after a day or two when i finally able to watch TV. I'm really worried now it seems like we're near THERE! We're experiencing El Nino here in the Philippines and it haven't rained for months and the water level in some dams that supplies water and electricity in the area is dropping so fast. i think we have to start praying, i'll start praying too that hopefully these things happening to us is not the sign that we're almost THERE (i'm talking about end of the world) =(

The earquakes in an country prone tothem and El Niño in a country where that sea current passes nearby every year does not mean the end of the world. Do not worry. We are doing a lot more to reach the end of the world than Mother Nature.

I did not hear about this news and i do not know if this really happens or not. But if you can provide the link of that news, This could add more information to us. As this kind of topic give a good source of knowledge to us, So keep up this kind of work......take care!

I am sure you are right in that few likely would notice the subtle changes but over time they do add up! I had never read before that our earth's axis had been altered by a recent earthquake and found it fascinting so wanted to share that. I in no way wanted to alarm anyone.

That I didn't know. Do you have a link to that statement as I find it hard to believe?
If the axis of the earth changes with big earthquakes then it must change a lot of times each year as the world has several big quakes each month. Maybe they cancel each other out?
If true then the theory that man is making the climate change is blown sky high!

i've watched a few things on the discovery channel, all very interesting.
i did see one on them trying to predict where the next massive earth quake would be, i think they were going for turkey thou. then there was another one on the magnetic feild round the earth and how thin it is and that it's a few hundred thousand yrs over due for a change in the flow of it.
then you think about the movie "the day after tomorrow" what happened in that and if that could have any prediction in things.
but i'd be going for some of the events we are seeing are things that would have happened thousands of yrs ago, and they of course would have not been recorded and now we are getting to see them.
don't know if any of that made sense, sorta stuff you really have to watch in the doco's.

I heard the same thing on the news, but the change won't really effect much to be quite honest. We should not notice anything different, and according to sicence experts it would take a milliion more earthquakes like that to change the earth's time by one full second, which in reallity shouldn't make that much of a difference.
I am not too worried or concerned, and I never stopped to even think aout it. As long as I've got air in my lungs and can breathe and live just fine, then I'm fine.

i started to think about the movie "2012" and the ideas that are made in the movie ,and it is possible to come that moment when the earth will start new era of environment and if there is a little bit of true in the movie i think that the earthquakes are the beginning.i start to be scaring.
