Does a dog know when he will die?

I think my dog knew he was going to die and tried to say goodbye to me for the last time. I know it sounds weird, but I truly believe it.
We knew the time would come sooner or later since he was diagnosed with lymphoma a few months ago. The vet told us he had about 3 months to live. Anyway, as the weeks passed, my dog came upstairs less and less. He used to sleep in our bed every night or come upstairs just to be with us. One day, he just stopped coming upstairs and I completely understood why.
On the day he died, I was getting ready for work in the morning and he came up the stairs and watched me. For a split second I thought maybe he's trying to say goodbye, but I was in denial and brushed that thought out of my mind. I instead thought that maybe he's getting better since he was strong enough to make it up the stairs. I spent a few minutes with him, gave him a hug, kissed him on the nose and left for work.
A few hours later, my husband called me to let me know that my dog just took his last breath and passed away. I rushed home from work to say my last goodbyes and cried my eyes out. I then realized that my dog visited me while getting ready for work because he knew it would be the last time he saw me. My heart filled with sadness and guilt as I was 15 minutes early to work that morning. Had I followed my instinct, I would've spent those 15 minutes with my beloved dog.
I miss him so much. He was the best dog ever.
Has anyone else experienced their dog or pet giving them a sign that he / she was going to pass?

My answer is yes, I think. I was still a kid when I had my last dog. Then last New Year, my cousin gave me a puppy. He might have heard my parents say something about me agreeing to get a dog of my own after fifteen or so years.
I got this cute, heavily active pup. For his size, my pup was running everywhere! And for a K9, he was very, very sweet.
I only had him for a month. The last time I fed him, he made sure he finished his bowl, drank his vitamins and all. I got ready for work later and noticed that he wasn't quite himself. He kept looking at me, watching me, without barking (very unusual). I was talking to him, saying goodnight (I work at night), all he did was to stare at me. Normally he would come up to my lap.
He was able to endure a few more days, the bad thing is he wasnt able to eat anymore. I was crying everytime I see him, asking him to not go yet, which maybe the reason why he tried that he was able to stay for a few more days. I wish I hadnt asked him that, because I realized later that he was in pain. I still cry about it. I still say sorry for asking him that favor. Still wishing he can forgive the terrible me.

I know what you said is true. I have owned several dogs and had the same happen to me several times, each breaking my heart. It happened not thaat long ago to my Lil Girl the mother of 2 litters of puppies. She kept trying to grt my attension. I went overto her and she started crying. I called the vet and brought her in, she was in great pain and had to be put down, nothing could be done for her.
Remember her always...

Thank you for your response, but I am truly sorry to hear about your dog. I'm sure she was a wonderful pet. Dogs love us unconditionally and live up to their title as man's best friend. I spoiled my dog so much. He was the perfect dog. Everyone that met him fell in love with his playful and smiley face. I really, really miss him and would do anything if I could have him back for a few more days.

hi 808nala, Unfortunately I had six year old dog which was sick. The vet told me that she was not sure that she would be able to recover from the operation but if not done, she would end up dying as well. So it was worth the risk. I thought she was recovering well after the operation. I went to her kennel to feed her. She nibbled a bit of chicken just licked my face with her adoring eyes and it was the last time I saw her alive. I went for lunch returned to her home but I saw her cold with her eyes cold

I know that it would be too sad to know that he was going to die, but I wish I knew. I would've wanted to spend every last moment with him. I would've wanted him in my arms so that he could go comfortably knowing how much I loved him. It would've been really hard for me, but I feel guilty that I wasn't there. I am glad that at least my husband was there comforting him and letting him know that we loved him. I didn't get to say my final goodbye before he took his last breath. I feel horrible about that.

I think nobody knows when he's gonna day, even animals, their not magic or kind of, they could know just because they have a lot of pain before dying or something like that, but as i told you, i think nobody knows.

I tend to think that dogs can tell when they are about to pass and some seem to know when a human will pass away too. Dogs are very intelligent animals and have ways to express themselves to us. They stop doing the things that they used to do or love to do and does unusual things. I am so sorry to hear about your dog passing away as that has to be hard on both of you. I love dogs. They are family so it is just as hard to lose a pet as it is a family member. I remember my parents last dog laid out outside on their yard in obvious pain and whimpering. I had a feeling that was going to be the last time I would see her. I have heard that in some hospitals they have dogs, who go to people in rooms and it seems the dogs knew the person was about to pass.

Yes, I also hear many stories about dogs that know when a person will pass. I think it's amazing. I just wish I knew when he was going to pass. I knew that he didn't have much time left, but I wish I knew that it would be that day. I wouldn't have went to work. I would've spent every last moment with him. I wonder if he knew that it would be too hard for me to bear so he spared me to have to see him take his last breath. Instead he came upstairs to say goodbye and see me for the last time. I really miss him. Thank you for your comment. I really appreciate it.

Well i really consider such stories spooky in my terms...
such thought may be common as we try to relate to our pets on a subconscious level.
You like to think that you Dog knew that he was going to die (maybe he sensed it from you behavior).
I know dogs can do that sometimes, they try to be with their owners for a longer time but we simply dont have the time..
I have a seen a few of my friends really sad after loosing their pets ..

Yes, I am extremely sad. Sometimes I just think about the cute things he used to do and I start to cry because I miss him so much. I find myself talking to him when I'm driving alone in my car. I miss him dearly and I wish I spent every moment with him by my side. He could never be replaced in my heart.

I think I will eventually get another dog, but I don't think I'm ready just yet. I do feel bad that my other dog is now all alone. She's never had to be alone before since we got her a year after my other dog. I can tell that she's a bit lonely and sometimes it seems like she's looking for him. I wonder if she will accept another dog in her home.

Im sorry to hear that.
I ever heard the elephant know when he will die and he will go to the grave yard to wait for the last moment.
I had a doggie when I was a only kid but my family disliked pets at that time. The cute doggie was given to somebody else.
I didn't have another pet since then so I have no similar experience.
Just the other day, I watched a weepy movie about dog's loyalty named "Hachiko". I really recommend anybody who loves dogs to watch it.

This story brings tears to my eyes. I say you had a profound experience, and yes I believe dogs do know when they're going to die.
On July 4th, 2008, my dog Shadow, 14 years of age, behaved very strangely. Normally he does not panic when the fireworks go off, but that day, he threw a fit inside his dog pen, chewed up the wood and tore about the fencing and got out and ran into the house.
July 5th, 2008, he stopped eating but drank so much water. And he slept. And slept. And slept.
July 6th, 2008, I decided to take him to my mother's in the next town over where I baby sat because he was ill and still hadn't eaten at all. And he always ate. While there, she and her boyfriend and their roommate made him comfortable, letting him lay on a blanket in the living room with the air condition on, and gave him water. He drank a lot, and only got up once or twice.
When I came to their house to check on him, he was getting worse. He could barely stand, and though I managed to get him to eat, his body rejected it. It was then decided to move him to my sister's house, a house I had previously lived in with her, for a few years.
Now, I had another dog back at home who was eight years old and that I needed to go check on. It was very painful for me to leave Shadow, but my sister stayed with him. Here is the kicker. Shadow did not pass away until I said my good-byes, rubbed his head, and left for home. I believe he did not want me to see him go.
He held off for me.
Though as strange as it sounds, sometimes I can still see his form for a few minutes, before it disappears altogether.
I really miss my dog. But I still have Keisha, now about to be ten years old, and a black lab who looks a bit similar to Shadow, hence named Shadow Jr, but called Shadow.
Dogs are really amazing.
