I'm 16, and I don't really know how to cook for myself yet. I'm worried cuz when I'm going to be in college, I won't be able to make anything for myself n ill have 2 only eat pre-prepared foods. Which will make me unhealthy. All I basically know is how to make pasta, and simple things like that, but I can't do anything with meat or the oven.my mom complains because she said when she was my age she already knew how to make a whole dinner for herself.
So, when did you first learn how to make food for yourself? Do you think your location or time period had anything to do with it?

I learned to cook starting in 7th grade. We had to take at least one semester of home ec. I loved it. I took it every year after that all through high school except for one that I couldn't fit it into my schedule. Half the year we did cooking and the other half sewing. My mom also tried to teach me some things. I'm also good at following a recipe. If you can follow a recipe and know the basics and the cooking terms then it isn't hard to cook anything. I'm 28 now, so that was about 14 years ago when I first started home ec. you could also ask your mom or a family member to give you some lessons.

yeah, i guess ill just have 2 use recipes all the time. but i want 2 be able to make things on my own w/o recipes like normal adults do. N yeah, I took Foods class in school too, but I don't think it helped me to actually make any real food. we learned about food safety n sizes n we have a few recipes, but mostly theyre things like breakfast things or dessert-type things. so it wasnt too helpful

I've learned to prepare food for my self at the age of 20 something. When I was in College I don't have to worry about my meal since I am living in a school dormitory then and someone prepares food for us. However, when I started working and lived on my own (got a place of my own) I had to learn to prepare food for my self so I started checking the net for recipes and simple cooking tips. That's how I learned to cook and eventually prepare meal for my self and now for my hubby also.

I guess the first time I was left in charge in the kitchen was when I was in high school, but I only knew very simple dishes then, mostly fried, sauteed, or boiled. Nothing really complicated or extravagant. When I was in college, I was able to prepare different meals, but only those easy-to-do ones.

hi wigi
not bad girl.. You know how to cook pasta, and other basic foods like just frying.
I learn to cook when I was already 20, I have no choice, i live all alone cos I was working far from my family, back then In our house my mom who is always in-charge in cooking, she never allowed us to cook, she love to prepared food for us, so I grow up know nothing bout cooking.
Even now I have my own family, all i know is to cook basic food for my son, cos my mom in-law who is in-charge in cooking.. My hubby is pretty good in cooking, so I think I should learn from him.

I started to learn cooking when I was 16 so basically I just cooked eggs, hotdogs, etc, lol. I guess that was the easiest food that I can cooked before but right now I think I'm improving I knew some dishes and I can cook it in my own even if the taste is not better unlike my best mom.

I am almost 27 and I still don't know how! lol I am just kidding but I can't cook a lot. I don't really enjoy it but when I do cook, I have to follow a recipe or directions exactly because I don't want to mess it up. And sometimes still it doesn't tast right. However I will never be able to get it to tast like my mother's cooking. You just have to experiment with it..you'll catch on to it for sure!!

Hello Wigima,
As for me and my other 6 sisters, we started learning how to cook at the age 10. Starting from cooking rice to cooking simple recipes we use to have in our everyday meal. But with regards baking or using oven to cook, I really don't have any idea until I reach 26. It is because we don't have oven at home. We cook using fuel woods, and have never tried cooking using electricity (except for cooking rice).

I still haven't learned to make food for myself, but I can do the pre-prepared food. It seems that society now-a-days has lost an importance on cooking healthy and the normal way. It's great to have a good way to zap something when you need to go in a rush, but I would love to learn to cook. I started a cooking class, but I dropped out, because it seems expensive compared to the food, and it took too long. I might try to learn to cook again, but from my parents.

I learned to cook when I was 13 or so- I kind of just got an interest for cooking then. I learned a lot of what I know by watching the foodnetwork, lol!
If you like it, I think that's a great way to learn how to cook.
You're still 16- I'm 19, and there is quite a while until you'll get into college. Don't worry about it so much, and casually look into some cookbooks next time you're in a bookstore. ^-^

Dont worry too much. I didnt even know how to peel a potato well, but when I got married I learnt how to cook all on my own. You will learn without even knowing. Try to follow some simple recipes at first (several internet sites are great) and then you will get used how to cook more 'complicated' meals in a while. After all you can find several foods and varieties to buy from supermarkets and take my word that in a few years time you will even start to invent recipes yourself!

i was in grade 3 when i learned how to cook for my self.. we own a restaurant which is facilitated by my mom and dad. so every time i come home from school, no ones there to cook for me. i remember the first time i cooked for my self. i called mom and she had me guided with every step so i wont mess up the food. it was not bad nor that good. what do you expect. its my first time. anyway since then, i started to explore in cooking and i guess that the reason why until now, i still have the hands for cooking good dishes :) keep safe everyone

I don't know who's to blame...i think your mom always tried to teach you how to cook, but you are not interested.
Or,maybe your mom didn't train you at the early age possible.
I had 3 kids and teach them to prepare and cook simple food by themselves.
As early as 8 yrs old,i thought them how to cook rice,then...some steaming.
Yah,instead of frying some cold cuts...like hotdogs and bologna,i taught them to put small amount of water and also a little oil.
My daughter is now 16 and knows how to cook simple dishes from meat to vegetables.
Well,on your question,i learn to bake my first cake when i am 13,and learn simple dishes when i reaches 15 since i lived in dormitory when i attended my high school(3rd and 4th year)

I was useless at cooking. I was never allowed in the kitchen when i was young and at the age of 20 i could barely make an edibal piece of toast. I'm not joking.
Then came the day when i moved out thinking it was going to be easy!!!!!
Take out food was a good solution but it would last very long financially. One then starts to experiment alittle bit and through trial and error its easy to get the hang of things. Its the basics which are important and they never change.
I am now happily capable of cooking a variety of dishes to the extent that i can even invite friends over, something which would have been unheard of previously.
