I prefer keeping my laptop in a sleeping or hibernation state when not in use. I have even seen many people who like to make it stay in standby... what do you do when you are not using your computer ? Conserve energy or just let it go in a switched on mode.... I waste a little bit of energy by keeping it in sleep because sometimes I need to make it run pretty often...still... lolz.. How do you treat it?

I always SHUTDOWN my computer. I dnon't know why but it seems to me as the best solution because it doesn't take any power and I feel that it is turned off. I never hibernate or standby.

The best option is for a desktop is to shut it down as all other options consumes, either power or more memory from computer.
ShutDown: PC Off and no power gets consumed.
Hibernate: PC off but it uses more memory.
Sleep: It doen'st do anything but computer goes for sleep. It uses every thing including power.
Stand By: I have never used this option!

When i don't use my PC, i turn it off... It was more safer i think... It could happen when we don't know if there is an automatic program inside our PC (virus or adware) and suddenly our PC just turn on itself and then our files or any informations get hijacked...

I leave mt laptop in standby mode (just shut the lid and return later) because I am frequently using it. So far, it seems to be in perfect working order, which is surprising given all the punishment it's been put through over the years

I used to keep my in Standby and Hibernate. Now I can't do that for some reason, so I just have the screens shut off.

If I am going to use my laptop again in a few minutes, yes I ll put it in sleeping or hibernation mode. If I am not going to use it for hours, I just shut it down and then I switch it on again. I think we should be more cautious not only regarding energy and electricity bills but we do have to take care of the environment.

I alwasy shut mine down at the end of the day. then I boot it back up at the start of the day. I do not care for the other settings. my computer is left on even when I am not using it, it simpley goes into screen saver mode when I am not uesing it.

I don't do anything, but just close the lid. It is a new laptop as I just bought it in January, so I am not having problems with it whatsoever. I don't even let the screen gl black, as when I open the lid, it is all ready to go for the next day. The only thing I shut off is my mouse as it is has an off and on button. I do that to conserve the battery. My dedstop is is sleep mode where the monitor goes black, but not my loaptop. I don't really use the desktop, so it being balck is a good thing. Take care and have a good day.

I worked for an IT company and it is highly recommended to do a restart on any computer old or new at least once a day. Believe me we use to get calls from all kinds of people that kept their computers on all the time and had so many problems with them. Basically all they needed to do is restart their computer once a day or shot it down their while they weren't using it to have their computer working with out troubles for a longer time. Every one needs a break right? :)

The majority of the time I will put my computer into standby. The reason that I tend to do this is because I want to be able to use my computer as soon as I wake up in the morning and when initially booting it up, it takes a few minutes for it to happen while when you have the computer in standby mode, you are able to have access to working on your computer in just the period of a few seconds. I will do a full shutdown at least once a week, though.

Sleep and stand by are prety much the same thing. But, I do neaither I just let it run and leave it at that. I rearely let it sleep or I rarely turn it off. There is no need to do either one in my opinion. less abuse the power buton gets. And, that's an important key in keeping a happy computer. Your mother board gets the most abuse during a start-up sequence so thus why I try not to do it any more then I have to.

I always turn if off when I'm not using it. Even though I'll get back on it frequently throughout the day. That's just the way my mom had us do it when we used her computer growing up and I guess it just stuck with me. It also helps cause my kids will try to play on the computer when I leave it on. In all honesty though as far as saving or wasting electricity, I think that turning it on and off constantly wastes more than leaving it on because of that surge of power needed when turning it on each time.

I used to shut down my computer each time I used it to save power and because I heard it's much better for it. Nowadays, computers are made different so I usually just put mine on standby since I mostly use my mini laptop or regular laptop. I also need it to come on quicker, and if it's been shut down it takes way longer to boot up. My PC desktop I always shut down when I'm done with it because with CPU and monitor, I know it takes up a lot more power. Since my mini and regular laptops usually are used on battery power and not plugged in, they stay on standby almost all the time unless the battery is low. I've noticed that if I leave either of them on standby, it slowly loses battery power so I have to be careful in case of low battery if leaving them on standby. I think standby is ok for my computers now since I haven't had any problems with it so far. Thanks for asking!

I always shut my laptop down and put it in its case when I am done using it at night. This helps protect it from getting knocked around and having things spilled on it during the day when I am not at home. As for my desktop in my office here at home, I leave it running all the time, but I have it set so that the monitor cuts itself completely off after about 15 minutes of not being used. I leave the hard drive going, though, because I often run my anti-virus software and things like that while I am asleep at night.

Hi, MightyLeo. I put this computer on sleep when I am getting something or doing something that will keep me away from the computer for a short period of time. And I will shut it down when I have to leave from home or when I am finished from using the computer for hours. I hardly ever use the Hibernate mode.

Mine gets cleaned up and shut down if I'm not going to be back on it for a long time. If I have to walk away and do something for a bit sometimes I just leave it and let it do its own thing.

Hey guy,
I don't have any laptop, only a desktop. When I need to go to some other tasks for a while leaving my PC, I generally log it off. I don't know if I do the right thing or wrong.
Have a nice day.

I'm normally gone to work for most of the day so I leave it completely off until I get home in the evenings. Sometimes I'll check my email in the morning and still turn my computer completely off afterwards. I think it's a waste of electricity to have my computer on hibernate mode unless I'm planning on using it in the next half hour or so. Once I get home in the evening, I'll usually check my email and then put the computer on hibernate so I can make dinner and then come back to it.
