A few days ago, because I forgot to lock the gate from my yard , I was surprised to hear knocking on the door, and because i was sure that gate is locked , I opened the door of the house immediately, without I look on sight, thinking that is my friend, who still has the key to my yard, so that gives my dog to eat at home when I am not.
Surprise.... was not my friend, the gate was open, my dog was in the pen, and I was face to face with a beggar who thought I left the gate open for him. I was shocked of course, to wake up with someone dirty, dressed elsewhere in your yard, I was alone in the house, I thought I was a little back.
Of course the biggest mistake was to leave the gate unlocked, but a mistake as big, and it was inexcusable that I have not forgotten to look the sight before i open the door.
Can you imagine? my yard is 3500 sq.m., so my neighbors are far away from me, and if something happens they hear on television that just happened to me. (kidding, but it is tragic)
This time nothing happened, I asked him to wait , to bring him some money and food, and I come again with my dog with leash, to let him see that i am not lonely, I have given money and a package with food, I locked the house door , i locked my yard gate, after him, and i entered in the house trembling with fear.

Even though you did open the door by mistake you thought fast and made sure that your dog was with you the next time you opened the door. That would ward of anyone for sure. So good thinking on the spot. But I hope you did lock the door before you went to get the food stuff because you can realize the danger that would have posed. Everyone can learn from you story. Thanks for sharing.

Hi, of course I locked the door after I entered the house and bring some food and money, but i had to come again, this time with the pet dog, to see it that comes out of my yard, and lock gates, but I had more courage, because we were with the dog next to me; any way, who want to learn from what hapened to me, is welcome; i was silly, maybe others will be more smarter.

Hello icesmile,
No, I don't check the viewfinder. This is because I know if there are friends coming over or not. How I know this is because I live in an apartment. If they ring the bell to open the outside door I'd open, if they didn't and I just hear a knock on my door, I wouldn't.

yeah icesmile, a lot of things could happen from your gate to the door. good thing there's nothing bad happened to you. our house is situated along the road, but we have a gate before you could knock at the door, people who will come have to shout or call for us. we don't usually lock the door and even the gate. but in night time, we make sure, and double check everytime we go to sleep. our door have no viewfinder but we have triple lock. one of the locks is a chain so we can open the door, as in slightly open it to see who is calling from outside, without fear that if they are burglars, then can easily enter. take care.

I usually look at the viewfinder first if I'm not really expecting anyone. If I am, I don't even bother to look, I just open the door. I think It's really not a good idea to do that, but I live in an apartment, so I trust that the security downstairs in the lobby is heavy enough so that no one suspicious could enter the building.
When I'm alone though in a house in the province, when somebody knocks and I'm alone, I just usually tiptoe first in the living room, and I look at the window, while hiding, cause I don't want that person to see that I'm alone in the house, if I don't know them, then I don't even bother going out, I'll just pretend that there's nobody in the house. Hehe.

Oh, that`s scary! I usually check before opening the door, even if I`m waiting for someone, just in case it might be other person, as you never know.
Fortunately I live in a block of apartments, so I can ask for help quickly if something like that happens

When someone wants in here they buzz in from the lobby, so i can hear them on the intercome. However, when they come down, if I am still in the apartment, I'll look out the peep hole to see who it is. Then there are times when I might be standing out in the hallway waiting for them, so I don't have to open the door, and risk letting the cat out.

i dont have a viewfinder in my door so i just slightly open my door with my one leg supporting the door at the back so the door will not open even if they forced to push the door. i also have one time its a non stop knock and so i thought its an emergency but when i open the door its a vendor whose selling things. i was so angry but just keep it myself and refused to guy and closed the door.
