The Mavericks are on the roll. After the trade that brough Butler, Haywood and Stevenson in the line-up, the Mavs have won 12 straight of the 13 games after the all-star break. Is this for real? Which team can stop them?

Wow really? I have never seen the NBA standings lately. I believe the Mavericks will be a strong contender in the play offs and maybe they could win the championship if they will be able to maintain their pace and winning streak. I will not be surprised if they will win the championship.

yeah, the mavs are winning and moving up. it is now threatening the top place of the los angeles lakers in the western conference. although jason terry and brendan haywood are injured, its deep lineup is able to push itself into a competitive level that win games. the mavs have beaten goos teams like the lakers, magic, hawks, suns, and others. well, i hope the core team players remain healthy so that they can reach the finals this year.

Just today, they've defeated the Nets to win their 13th straight game, AMAZING! I think that this Mavs team has the capability to win a championship. Let's compare their lineup with the defending Champs Lakers and possible challenger Cavs
PG - Jason Kidd VS Derek Fisher VS Mo Williams
These 3 guards have 1 thing in common, they can all shoot big shots when needed. I would say Mo has an advantage in speed, stamina and offensive contribution, he scores more points and shoots better. However, his point guard skills are limited and that's why they have Lebron James on the team, he hoggs.... Derek Fisher is probably the weakest of the 3. His shooting is inconsistent, defence is quite poor and he's old. He is also limited in terms of point guard skills, since they already have Kobe running the floor with the ball in his hands. Jason Kidd however, is the best leader here, and he can make big shots when needed. His rebounding and assisting skills are much better. Not to mention his defence isn't bad. So I think that Jason Kidd will win this round. Round 1 to Mavs
SG - Beubois/Terry (injured) VS Kobe Bryant VS Anthony Parker
The winner of this round is pretty clear, Kobe is a God compared to the others, he can dribble, he can pass, he can cut, he can post up, he can shoot the 2, the 3 and free throws. Anthony, Terry and BeuBois are more of an outside player. They shoot well, especially Terry. Defensive wise, they're OK, but I don't think they can stop Kobe on their own. Round 2 to the Lakers
SF - Caron Butler VS Ron Artest VS Lebron James
Offensively, I think that Ron Artest is at a disadvantage here, he's not that consistent and does not have a great shooting touch. Lebron can probably score in more ways than Caron Butler, but Butler is also a great player. So on the offence LBJ wins, but when they match up together, defensively Ron Ron can guard both those players effectively. However, overall, Lebron wins this one narrowly over Caron.
PF - Dirk Nowitzki VS Paul Gasol VS Antawn Jamison
This match-up is the most interesting one, Dirk is definitely the best shooter here, but Paul is better downlow, and Jamison can do a bit of both. However, Antawn is not playing that well in Cleveland, Paul is also playing OK, especially when Bynum is playing alongside with him, so Dirk is the winner here, by the smallest margin. He's a better leader and a very clutch player.
C - Brendan Haywood (injured) VS Andrew Bynum VS Shaq (injured)/Anderson Varejao
I think Cavs are not very competetive in this position. Sure Varejao is very mobile, but he can't really do much against guys like Bynum and Haywood. Between these two, I think that Haywood is a better defender, but Bynum is stronger and a better rebounder and can score better. If he's on his game, he's nearly unstoppable.
Score - Mavs 2, Lakers 2, Cavs 1
So let's look at the sixth man
Shawn Marion VS Lamar Odom
This one is very very tight. Marion is a better on ball defender and perhaps a better rebounder, but Lamar can score in more ways and is a good ball handler. In terms of helping the team, both contribute a lot. So I would say this is a tie.
As to who is the true winner, that will come down to player's performance, team chemistry, home court advantage and many other factors. On paper, the Mavs and Lakers are very close to each other.

i like what you did here. it is a thorough analysis of possible match-ups in the finals. well, i hope the mavs can go all the way to the finals. but they have to contend with the defending champions, the lakers. if they mavs are able to stay on course in the same level they are playing now, then they will have the chance to be back at the nba finals.

They have great bench to support the starting five... They might go to the finals again this year. Hope they can go all the way this year. Looking at it the second five of Mavs is better than the starting line-up of some team like Nets.. As long as they play together they are one of the best teams in NBA

with the acquisition of butler and haywood, the mavs fortify its line up with legitimate scorers and defensive players. the way they are playing right now, they are on the way to the finals again. kidd, nowitzki, butler, marion and haywood are an all-star line-up. they can beat any team now.
