Hawaii Earthquake

A small earthquake hit Hawaii Monday evening. No reports of any damage. The quake was reported ranging in the 4.5 to 5.0 magnitude range and triggered the Hawaiin Island audio alert system.
One Hilo resident said "We just felt two jolts over here, but it was strong enough that you could feel it, but we live in a five-story cement concrete apartment complex, shored up with steel beams, so if it shook this place, somewhere decent enough where you could feel it."
It seems like there is one somewhere everyday. Do you have an emergency kit ready? Are you prepared at all. I really think I need to get more prepared.

I am prepared for anything, I think. I have a month's worth of bottled water, food, batteries that I rotate, flashlights both battery and hand powered. I have medicines, first aid supplies, bedding, spare clothing and everything else I need to survive independently in my house. If I need to leave I have a bag packed with everything I would need to survive for at least a week, plus cash to buy gas with in case credit/debit cards are refused. I have supplies for my dogs, too.
It makes me feel secure to be ready for anything that could possibly be thrown at me.
Many people forget to store water. If you don't have water, you're in trouble!

How frequently we have to face earthquake, so it is very imporatnt to be ready with emergency kit. This year we notices so may earthquake that never seen earlier. And I think we have to face many more in near future. If we are prepare earlier with emergency kit, Then there is a chance to protect some extant and we cam minimize loss and damages.

I live in a small island in the Mediterranean sea and up till now I always felt safe. I have only experienced on slight tremor which did not have any repercussions but your discussion really set me thinking that I should be more prepared towards such a thing.
I have found this interesting site which suggests seven steps towards earthquake safety. http://www.earthquakecountry.info/roots/seven_steps.html, It is worth it to take a look at it. It might be useful to anyone of us here.
If I am in such unfortunate situation I would try to hide under a bed or a table so that it can protect me from falling heavy objects.

I used to live in a flat close to a river which frequently flooded and I had an emergency kit in the bedroom there. I was lucky that I never had to use it but it made me realise how ill prepared I was for any situation. I now carry an emergency kit in my car, including a spare blanket, bottle of water, box of matches and other things like torch and batteries. You never know when it might be needed.

That's too bad, glad it wasn't worse. I don't have a kit. i did at one tieme years ago. They have been telling us for years we could have a quake here. I hope & pray they are wrong. It's always good to be prepared.

It is good to be as prepared as we can. Although, it is very likely that you would not be home to use it anyway, but better safe than sorry.

Ya know Rob they seem to be happening all over the place. The last time we had a quake was in 2001 it was the Nisqually quake. It wasn't too bad I think about a 6.0.
As far as I can remember nobody was injured just some damage to buildings.
They are saying that we here in the Pacific Northwest are due to have a mega quake especially those of us close to Mt. Rainier. I don't have any kind of emergency here at home but I only live 6 blocks away from the middle school and they have everything there that we might need. I am going to get a kit put together though as soon as I have the funds to do it. Right now I'm so broke I can't even afford to pay attention LOL! Next month will be better though and I plan on buying something like a rubbermaid plastic bin and adding to it little by little.

There are several dozen earthquakes every day in some part of the world. You can check them out here: http://earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquakes/recenteqsww/Quakes/quakes_all.html

I am not as prepared as I should be, but I have some stuff together just in case. I have stuff on hand if I was stuck here at home. You are right it seems as if there is a new disaster daily.

I don't have a emergency kit ready and honestly I need to get better prepared also. I live in Tennessee, and we got put in Tornado Alley a few years ago. After a nasty outbreak of twisters did some major damage, and even closer to home. Last year we had a few hit just maybe 10 miles from my home. It was a very scary situation. Speaking of earthquakes, we have the Madrid fault line that if we have another major one, there would be a lot of damage.
When it comes to twisters, I know as much as anyone else living in the alley knows how to prepare for it. I don't think it matters how much your prepared for it, that you will be actually prepared for it.

I'm really surprised that those who live in areas where there
are extreme weather conditions or tornadoes or earthquakes
are not better prepared. I suppose it's easy enough to say
but surely an emergency kit and some sort of basic plan like
where to meet and where to go is a good idea and easy to
figure out and talk about?

Where I live, we get tornados. We had an earthquake in Oklahoma last year that was like 4 point something. Some people felt it and called 911. We never have any that anyone can usually feel, so people called in to report it. I think they were afraid it was some kind of small bomb. When the Murrah Building was bombed back in 1995, I remember I was 20 miles away, and the earth shook where I was.
Since tornado weather is coming, I really should make a tornado kit. Water, goggles (to put on my eyes to avoid shrapnel), and stuff like that. They recommend a helmet, but I don't see myself getting one of those.

i'm not worried about it.earthquakes are the rarest of the rare in my area.
not saying it can't happen, but unlikely.
now,a tsunami from somewhere else, that's more possible.

When my family and I lived in Italy we experienced earthquakes on a regular basis; fortunately nothing too disastrous but unnerving all the same. We live in Australia now and the last time I experienced tremors was years ago. There have been a few lately in different parts of the world and it is scary and sad. We’ve never considered an emergency kit although we’ve worked out an evacuation plan in case of a fire. It is worth putting something together in case of a disaster; after all we are not likely to get any warnings! My heart goes out to those who have experienced them!

We live in an area that is near a fault line, and some years ago the geologists suspected that we would face a major earthquake sometime in that decade (I believe that it was the '90s), but we have yet to see the earthquake. Now, seeing the earthquakes that have been happening throughout the world lately, I suspect that our turn could be coming. Are we prepared though? No, honestly, we aren't prepared at all for an earthquake.

We seems to hear frequent earthquakes happening this year. Could this be a sign that the world is coming to an end? Let us pray that God have mercy on his creation and stop all these natural disasters from destructing human life and give us all peaceful earthly existence.

I feel much less worried about quakes in Sacramento than I did in Los Angeles. Still we do have a decent supply of food and water just in case something happens.
