lcd tv bad quality

I have a lcd tv and i sometimes watch some movies or football games. The thing is that my tv subscription offers standard definition quality and i also have a normal tv that catches signal from the same aerial but, the quality of the image is much higher than he quality my lcd offers. Now, my question is: Why and what can i do to make my lcd offer a better image quality?
