Ever Broken A Bone? Been Lucky All Your Life and not Broken One?

I recently broke my wrist Snowboarding for the first (and possibly) last time. Many people I've spoken to have either been lucky all their lives or have horror stories about their incidents. What's your story? If you've been lucky, have you ever flirted with disaster?

I broke my wrist bone while sleeping. Are you surprised? I had rested my head on it and it snapped. However, it might seem quite unusual but it happened. Doctor told me this could happen due to lack of calcium. He came to this conclusion because the bone would not join even after they kept it in plaster for a period longer than necessary. Doctor prescribed some calcium tablets. Only then, the wrist was able to heal. In old age, calcium content in bone becomes less, and when this happens then bones are likely to snap for no apparent reason.

Thanks for your reply achilles, and yes, I am quite surprised! I have never heard of such an event, but I totally believe it. I guess I'll have to not only be careful about how I fall asleep, but be sure to keep up my calcium intake, especially after breaking a bone.

Hope all's well now with you. I did not know even a sleeping posture can injure our bones. Calcium is a supplement that doctors prescribe as also vitamin D.

Thanks, and yes the posture while sleeping is equally important. I remember that the air conditioning was on I hadn't covered myself up. That perhaps made me strain against myself.

It was one bad accident that did all that to me!

Did you break all of those bones in one crazy accident? I'm not sure if it would be better to break them all at one, or the have that damage happen thoughout your life. I imagine that if it happened all at once, at least you got all the doctor visits out of the way at once at least. I'm having to go back to my orthopedist 4 times before I'm cleared - thats $120 on my healthcare!

Fortunely, I have not broken a bone in 50 years! I have come close, very near. However, I have the upmost compassion for those who have. I realize it is painful. My brother, accident on motorcycle, broke his arm and the bone had nearly broken the skin, but its swollen presence was obivious. It presented a deformity that only made you squint at its sight.

I can only imagine what that type of injury looks like! I've been lucky in that most of the broken bones I've had have been minor breaks and no crushed or displaced bones. That's great news for you though! I hope your luck continues into the future as well - keep up that calcium intake or you may end up like the unfortunate poster above!

I've been lucky and have never broken one. I have beat myself up quite a bit, bruises, cuts, and the like. I've lost a few finger nails, though. Actually, I have broken my right ankle. Putting up a fence a few years ago, the ground was convered, and I must have twisted my ankle in 10 holes in the ground. It hurt, and I kept telling the boss I was going to the doc, but I jsut told myself to suck it up, it was just a sprain. I didn't even bother looking at it. until 6 months later. There's now a bone sticking out of my ankle. Not far, or skin breaking, but it must have broken, and I just kept bracing it up, and now it's healed the wrong way! I'm an idiot sometimes.

That is terrible! After I broke my wrist I kept going down to mountain too...I only decided to go to the docs just for that same reason - of having the bone (if there was a break) to be set. My coworker has an issue with his wrist that was casued by a very similar situation to yours and has to do exersises everyday just so it doesn't hurt. I hope that your ankle works out somehow in the future! Maybe you will have a bit of odd 'luck' and have it break again for a second chance...if only things were so simple.
