The movie is a drama that depicts or assumes reality of what could have happened when man first discovered fire. The main tribe, that is the tribe of the main character, sort of got fire by chance and kept it burning by having someone guard it day and night. They did not know how to make it on their own and so when an enemy (another tribe) came and destroyed the fire, they once again felt the cold and could not recover it. So the leader sent a trusted man (the main character) along with two others to search for fire and bring it back to their tribe.
Their journey is filled with new ventures and discovery. They discovered other tribes living in a different way. Some were like them who wear coats made from animal's skin but they could make fire. Another lives in huts made form sticks and some sort of hay. This latter tribe has a way of making fire on their own and they could make it anytime. So they learned how to do it and brought back that knowledge to their tribe.
Since the beginning of the world, man has the capability to survive. And at that time all he cares is how to survive for his not even aware of his age. He finds food in plants and animals to feed himself, clothing to warm his body in animal's skins and shelter in caves or trees. When their clothing and shelter weren't enough to keep them from the cold of the night, fire is such a great discovery for that need. They somehow see fire as something they could not fathom and would even fight 'til the point of death just to keep it burning.
It can be seen in the movie that man at first, lived like animals, in the way they talk, walk, eat, and run. In other words they somehow refer to animals for their actions. The scene where the three travelers were chased by a wild animal was so funny yet describes their inability to protect themselves maybe because they really do not know how to do that or maybe climbing trees when chased by animals was the best solution for that at that time. Or maybe they have not yet known how to tame animals. The animals can also be categorized as their enemies for survival.
Their learning is somewhat slow yet they're eager to learn something new every time. And when that happens, it amazes them much. But their little knowledge and learning led to something bigger and that is what we are today. Their curiosity and eagerness to learn made them discover many things that are very useful to their daily basic needs and comfort.
Another thing that is good and worthy of praise in this movie is how it can make the audience understand everything that happened when in fact the characters' language is so foreign. Truly actions speak louder than words.
