You Sure I'm Your Daddy?

Just a few minutes ago, I received a text message on my phone from a number not registered in my phonebook. It says: "Daddy, where are you? Today is the last day for us to pay." I replied: "What payment? Where are you now? And who's this?" It answered back: "It's Wing2, it's the payment for our tour on Friday. I'm at school." I replied back: "Are you sure that I am your Daddy? Aren't you just sending this to a wrong number?" Final say: "Ooops, sorry... It's a wrong send." At first, I thought it was my daughter who will graduate next month. I thought it was her because we still haven't paid the fees for her graduation. So I acted fast to the message. This couldn't be the greatest laugh but this is one that I have today. I just wanted to share this one but I guess it could also turn into a discussion if you will share with us your experiences with text messages. Something that made you laugh when you had a conversation with SOMEONE YOU DO NOT EVEN KNOW WHO. When was the last time you received a wrong message that at first, you thought it was really for you? How did you acted on it? When was the last time you had a great laugh with a text message?

Well, here in the Philippines. the most common wrong message you'll get is a scam message saying you have won a million and you have to send them prepaid cards to claim the price. Other message i received was saying that she is a relative abroad that needs prepaid load to send back the tracking number of a package or a sent money. Some of our kabayans (Filipinoes) have fallen into these scams. I think now that these cases have been reported on TV, others would learn from these~!

i have just read after using the mylot search, that even PGMA and the Cabinet members reportedly had received fraudulent text messages. a 2008 online news site says, there is nothing we can do to stop criminals but to report them to the proper agency. the national bureau of investigation anti-fraud and computer crime division is the one who take charge with the said types of scams. http://www.abs-cbnnews.com/nation/10/17/08/%E2%80%98text-scams-rising-amid-economic-downturn%E2%80%99

yes, i agree with you. these kinds are very common here in our place. i know that there are still being victimized by these culprits. i guess the government, specifically the national telecom agency had already made their initiatives to stop these kinds of scam.

hello neil, I had same experience like this, but not a funny one. I received a message saying "ma,we had an accident, the vehicle i am riding was hit and we are here at the hospital,my mobile is missing and i just asks someone to let me text you,pls put load to this number so i can call you...i am badly hurt " Gosh,i am in a meeting that time and it just happen it was break time(around 3pm) My mind really get panicky and looking at the time,my mind's wondering, who among my kids is heading home by this time? uh uh...my daughter, yah,it could be my daughter. Just the thought that it could be my daughter,i dialed her number and to my relief it is ringing(oh God,maybe someone had picked up my daughter's mobile since the text says her mobile is missing) Then,i received a reply from the other end...oh!...it's my daughter, and so i asked her...what happened?...did you find your mobile?...or,is it your brother who had an accident? My daughter says "whatttttt??????????" Yah..."whattttttttttttt" as an answer...what whattttttttttt? i replied back. Then my daughter says...i am at home now doing my homework and my brother is already sleeping when i arrived home...so what are you asking if we had an accident mom? Ok...my kids were fine...i called back the number that texted me,it is only ringing and no one is answering. Just i thought about the load that the texter is asking me to send...aha...so,it's a modus...grrrrr... Luckily i was not victimized then.(ugh!!!)

It seems that there are quite a few text messages like this roaming around. I got one two days ago where the texter said that it was his new roaming number and that I should send prepaid credits worth P500 and that he will send money the following week. Now, since I know of no one who will text such nonsense, I replied back with this message: What do you mean you're sending money next week? Your children need the money NOW! And you have the guts to change numbers and ask for load? SEND MONEY NOW! Needless to say I never got any replies back .

11 Mar 10
I didn't get any reply. I guess the texter didn't expect me to respond that way. I've gotten these scam messages since I posted my number online for my online buy and sell. Well, its a small price to pay for my starting business.

I haven't (Yet!) had anything like this happen to me on my cellphone, but I've had one or 2 wrong numbers leaving messages on my landline answering machine,(I've never yet bothered putting a personalised message on the machine,so callers get a generic mystery voice asking them to leave a message..),the messages left are intended obviously for somebody else, but I get no return contact info from them,so just end up deleting them..

Reading back on other responses,it would sure make you think on the possibility that it might have been a scam of some sort...but how would that even work to get the money from you? Surely nobody would pass on their banking details in a text message to a "Wrong Number",even to an alleged family member, and cash would be out of the question? And again, surely even making a call to the number would blow this person's "cover" as a family member?

It always happen to me. I received a message from anonymous. When only number is show up on my mobile phone, it means it is not registered on my phone, so it is a new number and the owner of that number , is a stranger. Someone texted me before telling me she already arrived at the meeting place. I ask her who she was and she said she was Bing my friend. In real, I don’t have a friend named Bing. So I instantly replied that I was not the friend she knew, and she replied like this “what, I only gone to Australia and you don’t know me now” so I just laugh and I adviced her to call me and to hear my voice just to prove I was telling truth. She did and she apologize. Actually her and her friend Bing did not got the chance to meet since she lost the number, she did not remember the last digit of the number that is why she dialed mine. What a twist of fate.

yah she lost it there hahahahahaha, she said Bing emailed her about her new number but since she always deleted all her uninterested mails and spam, the email was included there. She even lost Bings email address. And she don't her Friendster or Even facebook account. Actually I found Bings facebook account already and I let her know. She, me and Bing are now good friends.

hi neildc well this was not a text message it was on the keypad at the pedestrian gate at our locked down apartment complex long before the eviction. I got this message on my phone, mommy please let me in , I cant find my key, mom please, I said, honey I am not your mom you must have hit the wrong number but I will press 9 and let you in,now go to the gate and it will open when I hit 9. so I held it down a long time then I went out to the walkway to see if he got through and i saw him run offto his apartment and watched as an elderly woman let him in, I heard him say, "grammie a strange lady let me in, I got the wrong numbers grammie" so he got in okay. poor kid he looked about five or six at the most.\ He sounded so scared and so little. wow.

When I came back to live with my daughter I had phone service from the cable company. They had given me a number that had belonged to a woman that I guess was in financial trouble and we started getting all kinds of calls from mediators and her credit card companies and all like that. I was at first wondering why in the world these people were calling me and then I realized what the problem was. It was hard, frustrating and even alittle at first but now we don't get many calls for her at all.

Glad the kid realised the message was sent to the wrong number! I had an amusing incident while on the phone to my friend once. We were chatting about boyfriends etc, this is before either of us was married. It turned out that both of us had been given a hard time by a couple of guys who both happened to be born under the sign of Leo. We were big on astrology in those days and we spent an hour discussing how much we hated Leo traits! Suddenly a male voice piped up and said hello. We both got startled and asked who this was and he replied with his name and continued to say that he was really glad he was not a Leo! We apparently had a cross line and this guy had been sitting there listening to our conversation for ages! We promptly told him to hang up or else!

I have received text messages that weren't meant for me from time to time. But the most memorable ones were two right in a roll. I received a message something to the extent of "Hey hot thing, how are you this morning", from one number. And then, not too long after that, something very similar from another number. I hadn't responded to the first one, but after the second one, I decided to call the first number back. It turned out, some gal was at a bar the night before, and giving out a false number to guys. The number, just happened to be mine. When I called the second guy back, he was in the room with the first guy, and said "Nevermind, I just heard the previous conversation with my friend." I think it is rude for people to give out fake numbers like this. Why can't they just tell someone that they aren't interested. Plus, at the time, I didn't get free incoming text messenging. So I was getting charged for those texts. However, I did get a pretty good kick out of, so it didn't really bother me too much.

Hi neil, I have received some greetings for different occasions. The person clearly saluted the person and his family and then wrote the greetings then at the end, the sender’s name was also there. So I am sure that somebody wrongly sends to my number so I just deleted it. The greetings came for the particular person 3-4 times on different celebrations then I think the sender realized that it is going on wrong number. Then I got some details of bank credit card, as your credit card is ready something like that… Finally I got a love message in Hindi, which was very romantic and there was no salutation or name included. The number was unknown to me like earlier cases….but it was a local number so I called up to that number…. The sender apologized me as it gone to the wrong number..

Funny thing about this is; this happens to my mom all the time. It's always guys asking for Patricia and my mom's name is Patricia. At first we were like MOM! But no really it's just a coinsidence! I hink it's hilarious! This one time they were over my house when some guy called and my dada answered the phone and told the guy never to call this number again the guy was like I'm sorry blah blah then calls the number again my dad answers and is like I thought I told you not to call this number again and the guy was like Oh I guess she gave me the wrng number then! It was so hilarious! I have T-Mobile and the same number for 10+ years so I don't really have that problem anymore but my mom has Metro (dumb) but that's why she awlays gets wrong number b/c people can change their number almost every month and they recycle numbers like CRAZY!

Hi Neil, Many years ago before the mobile phone was ever invented, lol! that sounds anciant, when iwas living at home with my mothere, I had this phone call someone whose name I know, then he was clling me by my name, so we chatted, he was saying how sorry he was for walling out on me the night before, now at this point I was confused, so I told him I have not seen him for many months, well it turned out that we were both talking to the wrong party here and we had a good laugh, he asked me if he could call again, and I said yes, four months on, we became good friends and even went to his wedding with this girl that had the same name as myself, that was very strage thing to have happened, what a way to make friends, lol!
