Should there be Background Music in a Movie?

India
March 10, 2010 5:25am CST
Hi friends, Is background music that important? I've not seen a single movie without background music. A music to amuse? Or, does it have a more significant role? Some sort of researches are carried out to select music that suits the situation. Does the background music really makes it more engrossing? I seldom pay attention to background scores. Not consciously at least. But sometimes I really feel that my sensation gets doubled with right kind of music. What do you think about background music? Do you think they plays a role? Thanks in advance for your responses God bless you all

Movies are meant for entertainment.. in a movie, if there is no comedy, no fight, no sentiment.. just actor and actress comes speaks some dialogues and goes off.. will that be interesting to watch?? no right?? Likewise, in a scene, actor/actress fails to express his or her feelings, background music will manage.. to describe a scene, background music plays a prominent role.... So background music is always important(vital part) in a movie.....

Why do you always write in bold dear? It is also kinda creepy LOLzzzz .I completely agree to what you have said here. The emotion has exactly right impact when some well researched, relevant background score is added to it. Thanks for your participation. God bless you

Oh Dear, Don't you think this difference can be made otherwise? I mean, by writing with a conviction or, by invincible logical strength or, with literary gestures? Take care

Under most circumstances music can highlight a film. However, Paranormal Activity is my current favorite horror movie, because 1) in that genre music is overdone, and 2) that movie has no music. The scary parts are genuinely scary, and there are no inferior tricks to sneak in another mass audience jump to some scene that is not scary in itself. In all the other movies I can now time it when they do it, when it gets all quiet and suspenseful-like. Within five seconds or so, BANG! repeated several times in each such film. It is too much of a cliche now. It worked for me when I was younger, but I'm grown up now.

Hello dear, You know what I am gonna do now? I will write the name Paranormal Activity in my notepad. Thanks for the recommendation. Yes, I've long been looking for a true horror movie. I don't know why horror films don't scare me anymore . I first thought I might be having a hormonal imbalance or something. But now I am relieved, to know that at least one person is there who agrees with me. I will watch the movie you mentioned here. Thanks for the recommendation and thanks for such a nice response. God bless you

First I have to say I love your avatar. Background music is very important.the only film I Know doesn't have any music in it at all is Executive Suite. Background music helps set the mood of the scene. There are two movies hat come to mind where the background music is Key.one is American Graffiti. In this film the back ground music was the Wolfman jack show, a popular radio show in the 60's , So in every scene there was a go 60's rock n roll hit playing in the background. Another is Psycho. the famous shower scene is terrifying Because of the background music.

Dear Sarah, You should have said that before. I have just changed my avatar. Well, I can change it back if you want. Yes, I remember Psycho. That was one of the classic masterpieces of Hitchcock. I remember the monotonic sound of that background score. The music was an addition to already appealing suspense. It played a vital role in the movies success no doubt. Thanks so much for the response and also for the compliment. God bless you

The background music of a movie is an interesting thing. You don't notice it much when you're watching the movie, but you'll notice, that something is really missing when there will be no music at all. I've made a couple of short movies with my friends and I can say that background music is very important in movies. It doesn't have to last for the whole duration of the movie, but there are some parts, where there is quite few sounds or dialogues, so it's good to fill such places with background music.

Hello, I absolutely agree with you there. One would not know what it feels like to watch a movie without the music, until the music is entirely removed from it. It would really feel awful, vacant and dull. There are some parts that need music to successfully launch itself on human mind. Thanks so much for such a nice response. God bless you

yes! background music plays a very important role in movies. it carries the whole emotion of the scene and multiplies the effect of that emotion when you hear them together with what's happening on screen. just like in a painting, the background can add expression as to the gloominess and the happiness of the scene.

Hello dear, Yes background music multiplies the effect of a scene. It enhances the theme of the film. There are certain films though where background music has been used quite inappropriately. Those being the pathetic victim of unscrupulous composition, the rest always have extensive use of it for enhancement of thoughts. Thanks so much for this response Welcome to myLot God bless you

Yes definitely. If you are familiar with drama, music makes the audience enter into the right feeling according to what you have the intention of showing. For example if it is a thriller, the music is expected that fills you with suspense. If if it is going to be a comedy than the background music enables this with a comical background music. Perhaps you don't give enough attention to the music but if you had to watch a movie without it, the film would be boring. In my opinion a good music always plays a role in the success of a movie.

Hello, Yeah you are right. Our attention are actually confined within the scene, so we don't focus on the music. But the background score actually enhances the mood of the scene. Hey, do you remember the film Dr. Zivago? The background score? It was wonderful, wasn't it? God bless you

I like background music being in movies. I think it does play an important part to the movies. Like sometimes if it's at a sad scene they will play some kind of sad song that will make you cry when you see that scene. Or they might play some upbeat song if they are doing something to have fun or if they are dancing or things like that.

I do feel background does has a role to play in a movie. It enhances the movie with the sound effects, creating climax when necessary. It would be boring to watch a movie without any music at all times.

Hello, Yeah but there are certain moments you have to get rid of the music or at least turn the volume low as on those moments the dialogs are more important. When the scene has more appeal than the music itself you really don't need any music. But in all other times you certainly need background score to enhance the overall mood of the scene. Thanks so much for your contribution dear God bless you

Yes certainly the background music is an integral part of the movie and cannot be dispensed with. I sometimes feels that the music playing in the background help the emotions of the character come out much more clearly. Its the background music that makes the viewer more thoughtful of the situation (there are times when the absence can also do the trick).

The music adds to your mood during the movie, just as playing your music at home creates a happy, sad, pensive, creepy mood. Without the background, whether you consciously listen or not, the movie would lose much of its effectiveness.

background play a very important role conveying the concept or the meaning of the action being played. If there is a sad scene definitely a sad background music will deepen the feelings of the viewers and similarly its true for all other feelings as well. Background music is as important as dialogs in the movie.

Hello Ajay, Yeah, you said it quite right. Thought I've seen many Indian films making irrelevant music on certain scenes. When a person is really really sad, the background music shouldn't be of beating drums and blowing trumpets as if one is in some wedding. There are several irrelevant compositions that were actually targeted to the cassette industry and not for the sake of the film itself. I get infuriated at these callousness. Thanks so much for your insightful participation. God bless you

I absolutely love background music. I think it can be a factor that makes the movie feel more like a movie and not like a homemade video or something you're observing in real life. I've often wished that I could have background music during the events in my life. I think it would make things a lot more emotional and interesting.

Music makes a big impact on the movie. It does so many things. Notice how tha japanese or Koreans make horror films. The music helps it become scarier.take THE RING for example. It scared a lot of people whenever Sadako comes out of the TV. However, try watching the film with the volume off. There is no impact. Music helps build the mood of the story.

Hi, Yea I have seen some horror masterpieces like Shutter, The Ring etc, The Grudge etc. They made quite an effective implementation of background music. Those music really creeps me out. People do shudder watching those movies 70% of which is due to the music itself. Music really helps building the mood of the story. Thanks for your participation God bless you

I think the background music is so important for a movie. Some music is great and it makes the movie much more attractive. And it can really make the scene much more vivid. For example, I think the music of Brave Heart is great. I love China

Hello, Oh gosh! You have just reminded me of one of my most favorite movies. Brave Heart is totally cool. I can't forget the last scene when William Wallace was being executed. The background music there was awesome. I was about to weep. Have you watched The Passion of Christ? It was another masterpiece by Mel Gibson. Thanks for the response God bless you

Hello getbiswa Music is very but very important on movies. It gives more hmm "life" to the scenes. Music helps depending on what you want the scene to be, for example on an horror movie, music should go with the theme. I enjoyed many of the background music, I really liked Up, but the music played a great role on that movie, without it, it wouldnt have been so great.

I think both music and silence play significant roles in the background of movies. Just think about that Jaws theme song- didn't it add so much suspense to that infamous scene where the swimming girl was attacked by Jaws? I think music and silence can add so much emphasis to the general mood of a movie scene.

Hi, Yes, emphasis is quite necessary. They are aimed at getting more and more involvement on the part of the audience. The suspense they create, the laughter they instigate, all accumulates to be the overall success of the movie. Thanks so much for your response God bless you
