"It is clear that adults need stories. But fairies have shortened their dresses ..." (Marianne Moore)
How much you know, or want to know about those who have done something before us ?
Let us know the basic cultural values take absolutely necessary and keep the awareness of our identity, otherwise we do not have identity, if we do not know the culture, traditions, history.
You can not say that you are a citizen of a country, unless you know its history, unless you know your roots.
As you can live this, then you build a better future, you must know your history. History is among the first materials that define the general culture of an individual. Develop your ability to think and to perceive the important events that mankind has passed.
How much you know the history of your country?

Oh-------that was exactly our lessons in history before. Today, I still know about the general history of Philippines or known before as Archipelago de San Lazaro. However, I am afraid I forgot already the detailed one. Spaniards colonized our ancestors for more than 300 years. But before them, several merchants had been visiting the islands before the ice age. Where countries are said to be connected like japan, Taiwan, Brunei and many other Asian countries today. Malay and Chinese where our first forefathers. They visited the Island as Merchants, exchanging their textiles or cloths by the harvest of the natives.
Meanwhile, the Portuguese Magellan went to the King of Spain. (I had known lately that Magellan was not really coming from Spain, but his homeland was Portugal). He led the expedition together with 5 ships Victoria and the other 4 with thousands of men to seek for more territories and finding the spice Island. (Victoria was the only ship survived to go back Spain after Magellan slayed by our hero Lapu-Lapu).
They Landed in Homonhon Island (But there are so many theories now that Homonhon was not the first Island landed by them (I don't know till now which is true), and before the Magellan team, there were so many Spaniards team who tried to colonize the Philippines but they didn't succeed. Our ancestors was deceived by the good purpose of Magellan, the Cristian-ism.)
To make the story short, after them we were colonized by Japanese and Americans until we got finally our freedom. To trace our ancestral blood, we are already mixed by now. But most of our cultures are coming from Malay and Chinese in fact many of our Tagalog words are coming from them e.g. anak and many others.
Zamboanga and other parts of the Philippines who had been camps or community of Spaniards, mostly people there have divided chin and speaking like of Spanish mixed with their dialects...
Mano Po and other good virtues were gifts to us from the kind Chinese people.
Thanks
PA

I'm pretty proficient in my knowledge of the history of my country and the effects that it had on the rest of the world. I am strong in three areas - Mediaeval times, the mid 17th century and late 19th century. In my opinion children should be taught more that they currently are about the history of their countries. We can learn an awful lot from what our ancestors did. I am often told that history is "boring". It can be, but in my experience it's history teachers that are dull and idle. If they bring it to life for the children then they will cement learning that will remain for a lifetime.

Hi, history is not boring, just depends on who tell you this story, beautiful, true, just to show you all as a true fairy tale, that people have experienced it before us, a history teacher must be as a grandmothers for they grandchildren tells about princes and princesses, situations and times past . I know, let s say that i am involved in this, history is just a story, but a true story.

I know the basics. But my roots don't go all the way back to the beginning of this country. Most of my ancestors came here in the late 1800's and early 1900's.

George Santayana said that "those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it." I love history and I always try to remember this adage. Historical knowlegde is very important in making decisions. Life keeps repeating itself, and so the more you know, the more you can avoid committing the same mistake. Lately I have taken to walking around my town to re-discover it, and loving every minute of it.

i really agree on what you said that we should know our history, our roots for us to know our identity. we dont have a sense of identity if we dont know it. for me, im so fond of reading history books and it's actually one of my best grades in school. we're always taught in school that we should know our past, to understand the present and of course to predict the future.
