I am a student of a university in China and i had learned english for more than ten years, however,my english is still very disappointing.
I took part in an English oral test about this afternoon, i failed.i am sad notwithstanding that i know i don't have enough power to compete with them in English. My average score of major is the best in our department, this event makes me understand that English is much more important than major scores.Oh,my god,i am a Chinese, not an American or an Englishman.I know there is no useful to complain here,it's impossible that the world will change just for me,what should i do is improving my damned english. But how?Could you tell me something about how to learn english? Is it helpful to dictate VOA english?

Is your problem more with written or spoken English?
If you need to practice your written English then myLot is a fun place if you have time to read and respond on the discussions. No-one is going to scold you here if your English is not perfect and while participating it will improve. There are many Lotters who are here just for that purpose - and they earn a bit for doing so too.

Oh! Thank you for the BR
but you might receive other responses which are much better than mine. That is why myLot ask us to wait at least a week before awarding it.
Would you like it if we point out anything that you write incorrectly?
For example 'Thank you four help' should be 'Thank you for your help' or it could be 'Thank you for helping'. Some users here are appreciative while others prefer not to know. I should point out that it will not damage your earnings if you make mistakes. We all make them. I make lots of typing errors
Just try your best and have fun and make friends!

Hi litian,
If you want to improve your English writing skill, you have to make a lot of writing practice and one of the place you can do it is here. You can participate in the discussion and try to improve your writing skill. Just like mysd said above, you can improve your writing skill and at the same time you can earn some extra money. And if you have a lot of friends, you definitely will have a lot of fun here.
While learning writing skill can be learn from computers or books, learn how to speak and or pronounce something in English require a teacher or someone who knows the proper English knowledge. You can not learn it from computer or book because you need to say the word(s) in a correct way. If you have someone who know about it, they can correcting your pronunciation and speech immediately. Otherwise you will comfortable with the way you say it and it is hard to change it once you knew you have done it wrongly.
To improve your oral, you better practice it a lot. If you feel shy, try to use it with your friends or your family.

Just as you say,i am shy and i don't dare to talk with others in english. It's not because of being afraid to make mistakes, the reason is that my pronunciation is terrible and most of people can not understand me.Thank you for your advice,i will practice my spoken english a lot.

Your English seems great, so I don't think you need a lot of improvement in the writing/reading part of the test.
About the oral test... I improved my oral English by chatting with friends on Ventrilo, Skype and phone. At the begining they were like... "huh? what did you say?" every two minute, but now they rarely say it.

Ventrilo and TeamSpeak are vocal chats servers.
It's a program that you install, and then all you need to know is the IP of the server, the Port, and the password if there is any.
It's usually being used by gamers, so maybe you should play a game and join one of it's ventrilos?

I feel your pain, I am foreign myself and while I studied English in my country of origin, it is not enough what they teach you in school, that is only for survive. but you can't do too much with it, in my opinion, what really helped me a lot was getting exposure to the language, watch tv, listen music in English, and talk, if you don't talk your pronunciation will be really bad, with any new language there is new sounds that our mouth is not accustomed to make, so those are things that develop with time and practice, I am assuming that you are in China, so I don't know how many people that speak English as first language you know, but you must practice as much as you can, use Skype to chat with people, many of my classmates used it to learn English, they will chat with English speakers.

Don't worry too much, if things will continue in the way they are actually going over the world, in 10 or 15 years you will have not anymore problems with english.
Simply, will be the world that will have problems in learning chinese ;)
And, for my personal experience, learn chinese is really a panic! Oh, obviously I'm talking about spoken chinese, because learn the written one is not a panic, is simply impossible.

If speaking is the problem it might be good to watch movies or TV shows in English. Preferably the movies or shows that are originally in English. The movies and shows will help you understand how the language is spoken and how words are put together when English is spoken as a first language. Reading English written by fluent English writers will also help.
Sometimes if you speak or write with persons who don't know English as a second language you might often each be making the same mistakes and not know it.
You post was easily understandable but there was a few mistakes. One thing is that in English when the letter 'I' is used as a word it is always capitalized. In addition your first line: i had learned English..., should be: I have studied English....
There are some others but I am not going to dwell on them. It seems writing English you can communicate where others will understand you even though there are mistakes, you still get your point across.
Mylot is great but you might be careful relying on it as many here are still learning English too and somewho are fluent get a bit lacks when typing on internet boards, that applies to mylot and the internet in general.
Your best bet may be to communicate with someone, email or in person, who knows the language fluently and will tell you when you make a mistake. You get your point across so it may be that you don't have anyone telling you the small mistakes that you make that are holding you back.
Good luck!

English is one of the hardest languages to learn in the world. So don't feel so down about it. Some of us English speaking people are pretty clumsy with our language too. There's a lot of rules that English breaks, which makes it pretty difficult to understand. It can sometimes be less fluent and harsh.
Your best bet to learn any language to read and listen to how other people speak the language on top of schooling. I also suggest the software Rosetta Stone, because it is considered one of the best software to use to learn any language.

Hi Litian, I am not so good in English as well and I didn't even grew up in an environment to practice good English. But since I am determined to learn it and I really want to be able to speak the language without rattling or running out of English words I find my own ways of improving myself. I watch foreign movies specially American movies, reading English books and magazines and when I go online to chat even if local friends I chat in English and I search for foreign speakers to talk to. For some it might sound showy or boastfulness but I don't care because that's the only way I could practice and improve myself. And the more I persevere to learn the English language when I got a job wherein all the people I'll be talking to everyday are all Americans, Canadians or any foreign people only. I even enrolled to some English related short courses to evaluate myself. In my job if the client didn't understand you because of poor English speaking you're fired. I like my job because everyday I'm dealing with foreign people. And for now I want to improve more of my English speaking skills because I find it very easy to communicate to anyone in any walks of life because I feel confident. My English is not so good but at least I am able to express and share my thoughts to foreign people. So, I think it will not be a big problem to you as well. Just keep on practicing it and try to find an easy way at your own pace so that learning it will not become something like pushing you against the wall and you feel all the pressures. Your ways of learning it should be enjoyable so that the more you'll appreciate it.

hi! i understand that you feel disappointed with you scores. i myself is not really good in speaking and even writing english. let me tell you that although English is the universal language, it doesnt mean we have to learn or practice english FLUENTLY. even the english-tongued people arent that fluent when they speak it. as you said, you are naturally-born chinese and that's what you are. you dont have to put yourself to the world just to please them. there are many people who arent born with english tongues but succeeded.

Don't be upset my friend. We Asians when equipped with patience and faith can do anything or master anything even the English Language. I adore you for expressing this matter for it is a difficult task. However I know that it will help you a lot in the end. You know what, disappointing as it is, people here can actually understand you. After reading the text you encoded they responded because they understand your thoughts. That's the important factor in communication especially when using the English Language. And because of that there's no problem with the way you write. Keep up the good work!

Actually,I have trouble like you,I then almost read your discussion as Chinese. However we learn Endlish as best as we can,it is chiglish.Becaus the environment is not beneficial for us to learn a second language, the rich always have their children learnning in a expensive ,bilingual school. So,I suggest that have a advanced traning class or exercising.Another good choice is MyLot.
