The third edition of IPL will kick off on the 12th of March,2010 in the city of Mumbai. The event is a great commercial ploy of BCCI to increase their wealth. At the same time it is giving the franchisees an oppurtunity to cash in on the popularity of the game.last year we saw how different franchisee owner insulted stalwarts of Indian cricket like Dravid and Ganguly.Even this year Yuvraj Singh faced the axe while he is removed from the captaincy of Kings XI Punjab. Is this the proper way to treat our cricketers?Cricketers are those who bring glory to the nation.Just try to remember the pride that we felt as Indians when Sachin Tendulkar completed 200 in a single one day game or when Sir Don Bradman himself told that Sachin resemblances his batting style. How long can we withstand their insult and how long can we tolerate this tamasha?

Thanks for your response. It's not only the question of retirement that I was referring to.The way the franchisees are appointing foreign players as captain it appears that the World no.1 and 2 rankings that India possess in tests and ODI's has nothing to do with the calibre of the players.I also like to say that holding IPL in the month of March-April in India is inhuman. The kind of heat and travelling that the players had to undergo is extremely strenous. The BCCI is using the players as ATM's.This inhuman and pathetic condition must be stopped. The performance of the players can detoriate when they play for their country and then it's the country that's going to suffer. So their is a choice between the club and the country and I believe that country comes first. If the IPL continues with only retired players then it will be a much better option.

dont be emotional on this IPL. here nationality takes a back seat. each team needs the best man to lead them to victory. all that matters is just victory and that brings more cash to them. its more like a corporate kind of situation where only profits and market shares matter.

if we are lagging behind in other sectors, then we need to learn that from IPL itself. IPL has been around only for 3 years and a big success. those sectors where we are lagging has been for around 6 decades. Is IPL to be blamed for that? what kind of logic is that? One thing is clear, those heading the lagging areas need to be held accountable for the lapses. but what are we as citizens doing? think about that.
it has become fashionable to blame cricket for our faults in other areas.

I think you got me wrong. What I am trying to say is that we look up to cricket and cricketers to bring laurels to our country.I am not blaming any one and neither do i want to get into who is responsible for the backwardness of our country.Besides I am also not sure how we can learn from IPL franchisees? Can you please elaborate on this particular point?

Don't forget that cricket is not just a game for us the Indians. We are lagging behind the developed nation almost in all the aspects and it's only cricket that is trying to soothe our pain.It may be a corporate warfare for the franchisees but for us it's something different. Thanks for your response.

It is perfectly alright for them to do what they think is in the best interest for the teams. They might feel the players might perform better if they are not captaining the team as they will have the time to concentrate on their performances and relieve them on unwarranted pressure.

Now that is what I dislike most Do you want me to believe this that the franchise owners are in a position or they possess the required qualification to judge a player of the calibre of Dravid, Laxman or Sourav? If it had been so then why weren't they a part of the Indian selection team? It's true that giving up the captaincy enables the players to perform better as they can concentrate on their own game. But the point is once a player nominated as an icon by the BCCI it becomes imperative for the franchise owners to treat him like an icon? We all knew that Dravid was not a T20 player. Then why did his franchise accepted his status of an iconic player at the first place? He should have objected to it.Instead he accepted him as an icon player and then dislodged him later on to appoint somebody else which shows that the individual doesn't possess any cricketing acumen and he is not at all foresighted. Thanks for your comment.

What you wrote is absolutely trash. You appear to be a dumb individual devoid of any common sense and it appears that you believe that you are an expert in the game and extremely knowledgeable. So my dear guru just keep your thoughts to ourself and don't utter them in a social forum like mylot.

definition of IPL ===== BRAINCHILD of BCCI.
nobody is willing to take on the most commercially powerfull cricket board in the world which provides 85 % rvenue of the ICC.
you cant just ban that.its one of those things they say about sugar.if one continue to eat sugar non stop ,then within a few days the person will suffer from acute repulsion of sugar.
same goes for IPL.people watch it because its shorter and more entertaining.how long do you think this will last? only for a few years then they get bored then there will be T 10 gully cricket and then may be end up playing 5 overs hongkong cricket with tennis balls.
as for captaincy, only 2 persons will remain captain because no one can remove tendulkar from captaincy and promote it in the name of mumbai.second chennai bought dhoni not because he is a good hitter because he is the captain so all the other captains will shuffle.
i am not happy with players from different country captaining the teams.how good was muccullum and gilchrist when they hardly had success with their national team.
it was just a gamble.
as for the insult they deserved it.
when you play cricket for money rather than for passion you are nothing more than a daily wager or body seller and they get insulted.if they can withstand the insults at being auctioned, they are ready for everything

I also seriously think that all the craze about the much fancied IPL will come down. Infact we witnessed the decline of the popularity of ipl in it's third edition itself. So you are absolutely right that very soon IPL will be history. I also do believe that Tendulkar can or will not be removed from captaincy but the same yardstick doesn't apply to Dhoni as he doesn't enjoy the status and stature of Tendulkar.I am glad to know that even you don't like foreign players being ppointed captains. However, the insult part is a bit different. It's the BCCI who is asking the franchise owners to insult the players while it should have been the other way that is BCCI should have tried to preserve the respect of the cricketers. Thanks for your response.

Hi naxous, I am a big fan of cricket and IPL I watch all the matches of IPL but yes I want that IPL sould be banned there are billions of peoples who watch and like IPL, they leave their important tasks, office works, parties and many more due to IPL, the glamor and fame of IPL is tremendous, but after all it is damaging the image of cricket, players are treated as products instead of humans and they play like machines due to IPL and this not only gives harm to players and playing nations but the whole system of cricket as well. so IPL should be banned.

I also appreciate your viewpoints and its true that IPL is used as a medium with the help of which we are distracted from our current scenario. We tend to forget about the inflationary situation that we are encountering just now and all the pains and sufferings that we are made to go through. We try our best to get hold of a ticket be there in the stadium and try to enjoy the ambience.

I understand and agree that lot of things not doing justice to our great cricketers but it does not mean that IPL should be banned. If players do not agree to the terms and conditions or anything the do not like, they can not opt to be part of it.

I still feel - banning IPL is not the solution of all the problems you said. IPL has become such a mega event and most of us love to watch excellent players of different countries playing together.

Yeah it's true that the players can opt out. However,we must remember that the lifespan of a player on the field is restricted,so he will like to make the maximum amount of money that he can.Hence,it is very difficult to stop the players from getting into the auction. However,it is much easier and much more feasible to stop the IPL committee from holding the tournament.

i dont think that the ipl should be banned and all . its very entertainment and its good to have it . i dont think we can blame the owners for insulting the players . even the bcci took ganguly and dravid out of captaincies and replaced them with other players . if you dont play well surely you will not be given chance this the nature of sport all over the world . the owners have the team and they will decide on it thats all . if the players feel insulted then why should they play . .they can just come out of the teams .

Thanks for your response. However, there are a certain things that I want to clarify.Yeah it's true that Ganguly and Dravid had been dropped by the BCCI.But remember that BCCI has several cricketing personalities,it includes individuals who played the game at a certain level. Can you tell me whether the owner of Royal Challengers or Deccan Chronicles played cricket even first division level? And they removed the cricketing consultant and the captain from their position with great deal of ease.
