Hi, I am all new to this. We have children from previous relationships that go to these conventions (their adults now). They want us to go and see what they are into. Ok, so far I/we have no problem going to these places and see what they enjoy doing. The problem is that we are to dress up as anime characters to attend.. At first, I thought they were joking but have come to the conclusion that there not. My question is do you have to dress up as an anime character to attend a function? Is it dependent on some criteria? We do not want to hurt their feelings or not attend, But we do not be something we are not either. I guess, we could pretend to be character for a day or night if it means that much to them. Thanks for listening. Any enlightenment will be appreciated.

Well, I've been into some anime conventions before :) It's not really required to dress up ala Anime, or do Cosplay.. but it'll be nice if you participate. I haven't really dressed up into anything yet, and hopefully will have courage to do so ~ ^_^

Yeah I learned the word Cos-play not long ago. I am ordering some medieval costumes to wear and a couple of other items to go along with it. We also do the Renaissance Fair. thanks

I'd love to go to an anime convention it's just that it's being held somewhere far from my place. well, you don't need to dress up for it. some are attending a convention with just their jeans and shirts. the convention is for the anime fans to enjoy. so the only requirement on it is to have fun^^

I have never been to an anime convention but I'd like to go someday. My brother's friend is part of an anime convention so maybe I'll ask my brother to bring me if ever he will go there.

It is loads of fun. People are great. Outrageous costumes and details on them are to die for on some of them.

You don't have to to. Its like going to prom - they're not going to kick you out for wearing jeans and a t-shirt, but you'll stand out and it will not be very well appreciated. I go to them and dress up but that's all part of the fun! Besides, everyone is doing it (and I dont mean to sound like peer pressure) but what do you have to be embarrassed about then?
If you're really feeling uncomfertable with it then just don't dress up and explain to your friends why your not doing it, Im sure they'll understand and support your decision.
Happy myloting and goodluck with whatever decision you make. :)

I am not embarrassed by it,I just don't want to buy clothes that I will never wear again. I am not comfortable but I don't want to spend a couple of hundred dollars each to go this either. I understand what you are saying though. you do not want to stand out in the crowd. Thanks

Hello newtalent,
No you do not need to dress up as an anime character. The correct term is cosplaying a character. The convention is simply a gathering for those who enjoys the subject. Like a football game you don't need to wear a jersey.

I love going to anime conventions You don't have to dress up for conventions. My brother doesn't dress up, there are plenty of people who do not dress up for an anime convention. My first convention I didn't dress up for but I wanted to learn to make the costumes and thats why i do it, i make my costume and do contests, fashion show and photo shoots.

I go to anime conventions alot. And no you don't have to dress up (cosplay) alot of people do like to do it because it can be fun. I got with a group for friends and my brother, they don't dress up, Ive dressed up twice other times I dont. Anime conventions are like an appreciation of Japanese Pop culture with panels, dealers, showings, music, game room and more depending on the con. It is kind of fun to see all the different characters and get their pictures. I have made so many friends from going to the conventions and sharing interests with them.

I've always wanted to attend an anime convention but have never had the opportunity since I live a bit far from the places. As for the dressing up bit, it is not mandatory that you dress up as some anime character or whatnot. The people that do dress up (called cosplayers) do that for fun. So, no you don't have too. Just tell them that you don't feel comfortable dressing up, I'm sure they'd understand that.

Yeah that's what I am going to do. I have to stick to my comfort zone and dressing up is not going to make me comfortable. I know it means a lot to her but I cannot do something I am not ready for. Thanks for the information. Greatly appreciated.

Lol okay to make a very long story short dearie, no you do not have to dress up to attend a function such as that =3 it is fun but most find it rather demeaning.
