Do best friends make the best or worst roommates?

I have heard of so many stories of friends deciding to become roommates, thinking that because they have known each other for so long and have been friends for years that it will be easy to live with. Then after less than a year with them, their friendship suffers and they begin to bicker and argue and see how much they don't have in common. I personally would not room with my bestfriend because I know we would kill each other after three months. My friend who is college has now just suffered this predicament: her best friend of four years were roommates this past school term. Now its time to sign up for next school term's rooming assignment. My friend was reluctant to room with her best friend again after so many little incidents this past year, but they had not discussed it. However, when they were eating with friends- in a public place, before they could talk to each other about it- my friend got upset when her bestfriend offered her to be roommates with someone else. It annoyed her that her bestfriend would take liberty like that but oh well. Have you ever had your best friend as your roommate? Have you known people who have? Are they still best friends now?
