Growing old May Be a Choice!

Well meaning friends are a constant reminder that I am no longer a spring chicken when they keep sending humorous jokes to my emails pictures of wrinkled old women and jokes about old age which keeps me in high spirit and easing the aching muscles after a good laugh.
Being in the 50s I have thus long passed the peak of life where the waters divide. That half century mark is when we can do just as much as ever but would rather not. As long as we keep ourselves in good health, we will always feel the vibration of youth very much in us. I am baffled and have no idea why we age, considering that our bodies are constantly regenerating themselves. It is only with bad diet, poor health choices (drinking, smoking etc) stress, our deep rooted beliefs/programming that aging is normal and the biggest factor of all: the baggage that drag around with us everyday makes us old.
Aging may be unnecessary and should be classified as being a disease, rather than something that is a normal part of life. So, then, why do we age?

Disease..yeah not so sure bout that because there are people that actually want to "grow old gracefully" with wrinkles, gray head and all. I don't know if we can stop aging completely but we can certainly do have a choice in just how quickly and in which way we age and we can even naturally reverse signs of aging taking better care of ourselves but you have to stick to the program.

There are a lot of people out there in the alternative health industry which I am part of, that believe that we are not meant to grow old and die. Some believe that if we look after ourselves properly, then we should be able to live for hundreds of years.
I am not certain that this is possible in these times. Most of us are exposed to chemicals and radiation that harm us every day even though we are not aware of it. All we can do is lead the healthiest lifestyle that we can and hope to live to an age where we are satisfied with all we have achieved in live!

You mentioned stress elsewhere here having something to do with aging. I agree that has a big part to play in leading a long and healthy lifestyle. If we feel depressed, then our body does not get the energy it requires and can get sick.
If we are feeling overjoyed then we are feeling energetic usually as well and can get out and do exercise and other things to keep us healthy.

i dont think aging is a disease as its just the normal life cycle of life. if people will not get old then that would be a disease as its already immortal or abnormal. like i saw a certain movie about the person that when her mother give birth the baby looks old then year by year he looks young, its like the reverse of those normal person. i will accept being old if i know that i can have rest after long time of none stop working, its the time that people will enjoy the fruits of their hard work, see their children and grandchildren and enjoy life without worrying about going to work. unless we become old and yet we still have nothing in life then its really scary.

zandi458,
Old age is the later part of normal life one should born in
this world, nobody can escape in this cycling each and every
one should reach this stage till their last breath, as you
clearly discussed everything about growing old, which is
100% correct but aging is necessary part the normal life
but it is not a disease, one should accept as it is
and try to enjoy it very happily becoz this is one of
the god's gift, not all reaches the old ages, now a days
it is very difficult to reach the old ages like 50 or above.

it's not a choice, zandi. it's one of the mysteries of life where we can't do anything. we cannot stop it, neither can we alter the process. some try, but most certainly they fail. man has yet to discover the secret to everlasting live. it is a continuing quest that now borders on insanity. just enjoy life as it comes...

Through the passage of time, our body too undergo wear and tear as a result of use and abuse by the harshness of our everyday living. It is unavoidable. But the new age technologies have made it possible to iron out all the wrinkles and sagging of the face that make many never seem to age though the internal organs are already rotting away and dying out. The spirit of living is very much alive and young to maintain our earthly existence. We only surrender when God unplug our life to our eternal rest.

Good thinking thoughts..
I was thinking about this too the other day. I think that when it comes to aging, it's the only one that's not like other forms of illnesses or diseases whereby there can be cures for that. Technology only helps to slow down the process or aging, but to prevent it is inevitable. For me, I find the aging of years as a sign of maturity and with life's experiences piling up and giving a big meaning to life in general. Good topic here, and I'm also with the young at heart thingy like some have mentioned.

How young are you Zed? You maybe far behind me and I dare say that I never feel the age I am in not that I refused to accept the reality of my age but the thing is time passes too fast and the numbers recorded in the registry keep increasing but I don't feel any difference. No changes. I always feel young at heart. I can still go out clubbing with my sons who are in their late twenties.

hi dear .. what a question, why do we age ..
i believe in the term 'wear & tear' when we use something alot it seems to deteriorate and at one point of time just give up ..
just look at ourself as cars... a brand new car and used car ... they are both so much different in many ways ...
getting old is not a disease at all ... as disease is having an 'intruder' unwanted virus present in our body ...

Disease is when your body is in a state that is not at ease. Dis-Ease!
So my opinion is that the body that is frail, whether it is old or from cancer or whatever, is in a state of disease!

I actually believe that we don't have a choice about aging because it is something that is going to happen all of us eventually, it is just a matter of whether it is sooner or later. You are right about the decisions that we make having an impact on how soon we start to age. I'm only in my thirties now, and I do look my age if not just a little bit older. The reason that I look the way that I do is that I try to take care of myself. My mother is in her fifties and looks younger than most people in her life.

Hey friend,
There are a number of secrets behind staying young. They are: Have strong faith on Allah, think and act honest and simple, don't let sinful thoughts into mine, avoid bad diets and habits, love and be loved, eat healthy and think healthy, pray for all people to have a peaceful life etc.
Have a nice day.

You know I agree, it maybe a choice. If you think you are not getting old, then you are not old. That is why it is needed to always feel young so that you express a youth thought also. Age is the one that gets old and I don’t know why we increase our age that fast now. If we are living a healthy life then no one is getting old. But unfortunately, we are all stressed in a fast paced environment. We are always in a hurry like there is someone running after us. We did not stop for a while and think about what life is giving to us. This is really an eye opener to me. I must think young to feel young. Actually I had responded to a discussion about getting old three times now. There must be something life is telling me.

As I have always come to expect from you dear one, another wonderful question left to be answered. You posts still cause my mind to be stirred and come to life. I Thank you for that.
I think that as you mentioned, we age because of Life. The things we eat and the things we put into our bodies, that cause it to degenerate at a faster pace than it Re-generates. Year after year, we lose ground and so our bodies are unabl to keep up with the pace that we set for it. But I want to point out something that I think is very important. I think that we age because... We Allow our selves to. We accept it as a natural occurance that is unavoidable. I do Not believe that is so. When I turned 50, my father poised a question to me. He asked me if I felt 50. My immediant responce was "No." I told him I felt much younger than the year that marked my age. HE in turned paid me what I consider to be the greatest of compliments. He said that he and my mother had been talking about it and felt that I was Much younger than my age. The things I do and the life-style, busy, full, active all the time, did not show them any "aging" for me. How beautiful a compliment and it made me think about exactly the question you have asked here, darling lady.
Why Do We Age??????????????? Simply stated, we Allow our selves to because society and science say it is so. I say to Hell with status quo!!!!Live your life full and active. Do Not be a prisoner to the aging factors that are happening in your body. Keep a young mind and you will keep a young feeling in your body, even if mother nature insists on everything we have ;), going south. And speaking of "ging Souh" as it is sometimes called, perhaps a few more trips THAT way will also keep us young at "Heart."
Thank you for asking and thank you for allowing me to say what I feel. You are a beauty... Always, D

A little bit of stirring does wonders to a great thinker and writer? It has been ages since I last seen you around mylot and am sure you have been pretty busy with your blog and writing novels? All is not lost, all is not forgotten. . You must be thankful to God for giving you good genes to still look young at your age. You are super active and that is a plus factor in maintaining your present state. Men are supposed to mellow physically with age, achieving a distinguished but still handsome appearance. Provided they have no aches and pains and keep a youthful outlook and they can laugh at the advancing years. Only that a man is as old as he feels.

Hi zandi. I want to believe that age is an attitude,
although a part of me is saying that age is a stage
in our lives. My husband is 52 but he says that he
is not old, he said to me "Are you joking? I am only
middle aged."
Growing old is definitely not a disease. I don't want
to grow old and live in that concept of dis-ease...no
way. Old people can enjoy life still as if they are
young.

Definitely yes, I am enjoying life to the fullest and I agree fully with your husband who is within my age range that we are indeed only in our middle age. There is so much happenings and so much to expect in our age group cos we have experienced a lot earlier, be it sweet or bitter, and now enjoying a little freedom from the days of hard jobs bringing up children.

lol aging is a natural process, we can't stop it, health problems will come one after another, diabetricvs, high bp is so common, wrinked skins, joint pains are common too, i think my kids (above 40) are getting these problems earlier because of the polluted enviornment, pesticides, chemicals to name a few
let us grow old with joy and pleasure, face what comes

Regardless of our chronological age, it's a fact of life that we are among the aging. We all are. Aging is a process that commences when we are born. But with the addition of all the chemical laded foods in vegetables and fruits, it sure expedite the aging process. Just accept reality...aging is in human circle.
