Ok im 27 and i graduated highschool 10 years ago. I still love all my favorite songs from then. I still have the cd's ive downloaded them on my computer etc etc. Driving home the other night i had on my favorite station and they were playing songs from the 80's 90's and today... I was ready to change the station when a song came on that sounded to outdated and older to me, then i realized Hey! i LOVE this song i havent heard it in forever! LOL. It sounded so different sort of the way my moms music sounded to me when i was a teenager. I still loved it but i can tell it was older just by the sound of it. So does this classify it as oldies music to my 8 year old?

My music tastes have changed a lot over the years and though I still like most of the music I used to listen to I do sometimes feel that some music become 'oldies' faster then others. There are bands for me that are classic(Rolling Stone, U2, Metallica, Queen, ...) because they have people of all ages that listen to their music, that endure and there are songs that are revamped so many times that though the lyrics continue the actual song changes over time(example Tainted love - launched in 1964 by Gloria Jones, but Softcell in the 80's made it famous and the covers by Marilyn Manson and Pussycat Dolls are some of the more recent adaptations, other like Everlasting love, Young Hearts break free, ...). It is only fitting life moves on. The thing is since I listened to classical music and blues, then jazz when I was younger along with a lot of other music they always sounded like 'oldies', now I listen to contemporary music more often so music of the 80's and 90's do sound like oldies to me but no more so then the 60's 70's bands sounded like oldies in the 80's. The funniest thing for me is seeing baby music CD's with what were rebellious songs The Beatles springs to mind.

I don't consider them oldies, they're just songs I grew up with :)In my opinion, those songs from the 70s, 80s, 90s are way, way, waaaay better than songs today. Back then you can sing along. Now it's just some kind of gibberish like a boom there and a pow here.

Well, ten years is a really really long time.Anything that is so old would definitely look old and same is the case with music. There is no denying that we may still love the music we heard long back, any why ten years even longer but then, the feel begins to diminish. It surely doesn't give the same kick as it used when you first started liking it unless of course, you haven't heard it in a while and brings up some fond memories you have always cherished...:)

When I hear the term, I think "oldies" refers to music from the 1950's or so. I graduated high school just 2 years ago, and it does feel like a lot of the music I liked then and in middle school has aged. I think the music we like just seems old because soooo much pop music and internet-released music has come out in recent years.

Infact, I am teased for being not of the current generation as I prefer to listen to songs of 80s and 90s and some times even songs of 70s. I really love them and I hum those songs most of the time. I keep listening to one of the romantic songs which I like the most which is of 90s. But I dont know the latest of such songs and when my brother says that there are lot more songs that are much much more romantic than the one which you like, I cant digest it actually.
And some of the songs which are quite old are really liked by my 8 and 5 year old kids as I keep listening to them and as they are able to grasp the lyrics and sing along the next time it is played.

I've suddenly reached that age where I'm slowly starting to realize just how old I'm getting. Don't get me wrong, I'm only 19 so I'm not too far out there, but the people that I know who are a little younger (just barely starting their teens) didn't grow up on the same music I did. so when my friends and I hear a song that we used to love growing up (like we heard Tubthumping again the other day....what a great song that used to be!) we get all excited and they think we're insane because they think the song sucks.
It's really strange noticing that all the things we used to watch, listen to, and do are going out. Now I know how the rest of my family feels with all the new things that I like. I remember I used to love Dragonball Z, Beast Wars, Digimon, etc, and a lot of people haven't ever heard of any of those shows anymore when they used to be extremely popular!

Well, I love those songs which were referred as oldies. I love it much better compared to the latest songs release nowadays. And I usually call them as classics. I used to listen to my grandfather sang those songs to me when I was a child. I truly love them and I have them as part of my playlist saved in my laptop. By the way, one of my favorite is the classic entitled "Hopelessly Devoted To You" by Olivia Newton John. Cheers!

Well, to be fair, music can change a lot in ten years. That is a long time. In fact, music that was created five years ago can seem outdated. Everything goes at a break neck pace in the music industry to the point where if you do not update with the times you get thrown off and become a footnote in music industry. Everything is changing constantly. What is cool and hip today, might be outdated later this afternoon.
Still, I think this last decade has been one of the weaker ones for music myself. I have a feeling though if I played a song from 2000 and a song from 2010 back to back, the contrast would be so different. Then again, you could pretty much say the same thing about a song from 1990 and then one from 1999. And 1980 and 1989 and so on and so forth. The music industry is one that has so many switches and changes that everything has the chance to sound outdated to some years after the match. However, there is a fair amount of music that has stood the test of time and continues to sound great today.

Im much older than you and I remember that I used to hate my parents music and they hated mine. Now I still listen to the music I used to back then and I also listen to current music. I like it all to be honest. But my nephew is 21 and he laughs everytime he hears MY music. Its ok, its normal and it should be this way.
I dont think I would have liked having my parents hang out with us to listen to OUR music when we were teenagers.....there IS a generation gap and its fine like this, it should be this way or society wouldnt grow up or change.
The music today is meant to be different from earlier years and the music today will be boring to kids who will be born in 5 yrs and so on and so on. Its called "evolution".
So yes, the music thats playing today will be called "oldies" by your 8 yr old in about 4 yrs from now, maybe sooner!!

to me it's not oldies for i have listened to various songs when i was younger. Thr rock tunes i listened to is still the one's being played by younger bands in our place. The one's made before i was born is still enjoyed in the karaoke bars sung by younger people. My parents are even amazed of me singing a song popularized when they were teens, lol! i love the classics!

Maybe music 10 years ago, was more pleasant to the ears. It may sound oldies because it brings you back to the time when you love to listen to that song way back when you're a bit younger...

For me,there are actually songs that i loved since i was a child, and suddenly i heard it again after so many years, they really bring for me memories and so much emotion, they reminds me so much of my childhood when i was singing those songs before the mirror! So after that,i usually try to find the songs and listen to them again n again:)

Hi,
It surely sounds like oldies but u know what is good about them??? It is still the best and u can also enjoy listening to them compared to the present day songs which is full of noise and no meaning in them.....
For me oldies will be always platinium or even more costly than platnimum to me.....
I love listening to really old songs like Dean Martin or singers of that era though i was not born then.
