After having natural birth 4 times, I do not feel my pain ever got to a 10...8 maybe for the highest level, just before crowning, as the baby travels through the birth canal..but that is of relatively short duration.
Personally I feel that often times those who rank their pain as off the charts...umm the biggie...though the urge to push is strong the further you dialate, you really must avoid giving into that urge until your fully dialated. If you begin pushing prematurely, it causes the cervix to swell and bruise...dialation effectively stops until the swelling can receed enough for dialation to continue... amd babyy is not going to arrive until the cervix has fully dialted and effaced...so you would be drawing out your labor and increasing the amount of pain and discomfort.

Interesting, I've given birth naturally 3 times and each time for me, descent and delivery of my babies were definately NOT the most painful, it was transition: dilation from 8 to 10 centimeters (complete dilation). You are correct that pushing before the cervix is fully dilated contributes to swelling. Many women feel a premature urge to push with "back labor" at around 6 cm dilation, when baby is in an occiput posterior presentation.

My first child was a compound presentation (fist to cheek) and weighed 9 lbs 6 oz, 22 inches. I was in labor a total of 9 hours: 7 hrs first stage, 2 hours pushing.(I started at 2 cm)
My second child was also a compound presentation (fist to cheek) and weighed 10 lbs, 24 inches. I was in labor for a total of 1 hr 45 minutes. 1 hr first stage and 45 minutes pushing. (I started at 4cm). Both of my sons were occiput anterior.
My third child was occiput posterior. Labor was a classic pattern for this kind of position/presentation. I went to sleep around 11pm with contractions, and slept until 1am when contractions woke me up. I don't know what time it was when my midwife arrived, but my daughter's head was showing unassisted. I breathed out her head and shoulders, and pushed out her body. My daughter was born at 4:04 am. 8 lb 8 oz 21 in. I started labor at 4cm.

HUmm I wonder if our different view on where the pain was at it's worst has anything to do with duration? Did you have quick labor's (just curious)..My first child was my longest and labor lasted from 10am...until 4 or so in the afternoon. I am blessed in that I dialted to 5 or 6 with no noticeable pain each time...just told my doctor I kind of felt like I had butterflies in my tummy.

Thank you for responding. How would you compare postpartum recovery with vag birth to postpartum recovery after an emergency c-sectioin?

Fear of the unknown is scary, but understanding birthing process, educating yourself, and having a well trained Doula with you during labor, is a big help to many women.

i do not know beacause i have no children yet...But i think it would be between 6 or 7.depending on the condition of the woman. I had appendix and had tremendous pain before it. For that i would rate 11...but i do not know anything about childbirth....Are you pregnant now or not?

OMIGOSH, with both my pregnancies it would be a 10, maybe even beyond that. Childbirth is the most unbelievable, unbearable pain I've ever come to undergo. It was the most intense, never ending pain ever........

I don't have any children, but I was there when my cousin gave birth (she used a midwife and had her child at home) and I asked her how bad the pain was at different stages of labour and delivery. She compared the pain to various things she's been through, like having an ovarian cyst burst and dislocating her kneecap. She said at it's worst, it was more painful than the dislocation, but not worse than the ovarian cyst. I myself have had an ovarian cyst burst, and it was horrible; the absolute worst pain in my life, and I was once in a major car accident and it wasn't that bad compared to the cyst. I'm not saying that when I have children my experience will be the same, but knowing that my cousin could make it through, and she's a self-proclaimed "wimp" kind of reassured me. She also said that a lot of it has to do with your mindset going into it, and the more anxious and upset she became, the worse the pain was. When she relaxed (after everyone arrived), she said it calmed-down quite a bit. Knowing that makes me feel even better.
