Have you declared yourself old?

Although I may say it in conversations, or discussions I don't think I would ever declare it to myself that I am already old. Even if I've grown a little bit slow, I would always think that I am still young at heart, and in mind.
I saw this today as I contemplated enrolling in a class. I thought that even if my teacher would be younger than me, it would be like when I was in school the first time around. I would still dish out the 'yes sirs' and the 'yes mams', and I would still have the same silly, ignorant look on my face in class.
How about you? Have you declared yourself old already? What pushed you over?

I vote for acting your shoe size rather than your age! Yeah, I'm 55, so what? Its a number... that doesn't mean I cant jump in puddles, have a penguin rucksack, build a snowman, dance whenever and wherever I feel like it... and anyway, my mum says I can!!
No, I'm still climbing up that hill enjoying the view and I dont plan on going OVER the hill anytime soon!!

That's something I've never heard before. I hope you don't mind if I steal from time to time, and use it in my own conversations and discussions. Thanks.
Haha! Does your mum let you sleep late? And have sleep-overs still?
Thanks for the response.

hi bounce58 well time has a way of making us old even if we are
young at heart. I have to admit i am an elderly senior citizen now as I am 83 and while everyone says I do not look that old I am not sure if thats really a compliment or not. he he. But I feel younger mentally and emotionally but time has given me a bad leg with brace and all so I cannot pretend I am just 60 anymore. Limping around behind everyone else who can still trot briskly down the room does make one remember how old she really is.But my mind is still keen and I still very much love life.

Hello Hatley. No matter what physical condition you might be in, I can attest that you have a keen mind, and a good zest for life, however virtual my judgement is. It's unfortunate that you've been dealt with a bad leg. But, thank goodness for virtual reality because that leg hasn't hindered you from being everywhere. I see you here in most of the discussions.

Ive always thought of myself as old.LOL Well, there was those moments in second year of college where I felt really old. I also felt quite weird when I saw the freshmen. At that point, I always thought that our batch would be the last batch to come into the school. Surprise surprised when the first years at that time came. I really felt old and I wanted to shoo them away.LOL Though as time progressed I just accepted the fact that we were not the last ones.
The next "old" moment was turning 18. That age just means "legal", "mature", "your on your own", but mainly "old". I dreaded the day that I would turn that number. Then I felt the same about being 20. It means Im not a teen anymore and there's no going around it. Well, maybe I can declare myself as "Twenteen". But still, I know that Ive turned the big 2-0.
So yeah, Im not really that old in terms of age and experience, but I felt that Ive always had the mindset of a 50 year old spinster. I guess Im just a serious type and a deep thinker. I will admit that I still have those "young, reckless, and carefree" moments. Just having fun.

LOL You got that right.. well, sort of.^_^ I do think that the next milestone would be the age of 25. After turning 20, I wont dread the next ages anymore. Though I have goals to accomplish before I turn 25. Then of course 30, (like getting married and settling down or something) but after the age of 30 I feel that I would just enjoy everything that I can enjoy in life.
Thanks for the sound advice though.^_^

Hello bjcyrix.
Being as young as you are, and dreading certain ages to come in your life, be prepared to get disappointed. After this you'd dread getting to 25. Yet it is coming. Then it is 30, then 40. Then sooner or later you'd realize that you are at retirement age, and you'd wonder how you got to that age.
I hope you take those ages as easy as they come.
Goodluck to you!

I have pretty much crossed over. I have severe depression and it keeps my arthritis flaming up and I feel rather old. It is rather sad because I not yet 60 and could have some good years if I really cared to fight it and had a good anti-depressant to help me feel better. Better eating and taking care of my health would surely help but I am past the point of returen I am thinking.

celticeagle,
Gentle hugs to you. I've been through a great deal in life and have gone through similar things such as you. Some good things I can say are that for you're still young. My own parents, even if seniors, everybody thigns they are 20 years younger. And they stay active and exercise, try to eat right...
AND, another look at it is that one of my life mentors and teachers is believe it or not 99, and still living life to the fullest. And believe it or not, he still travels all around the world regularly, and even gives lessons and seminars and summer camps (sleep-aways too!!!!).

Thank you for your kind words. This is just the way I get this time of year. This year is alittle different though. What could you do? Just hold the door for me and heckle me as I go.

Hey bounce! I hate to admit it, but I have unfortunately had
no choice but to declare myself old! I hate the fact that I
have to finally admit this, but the mirror doesn't lie! When
I dare to let myself look into it what I see really scrares me!
What happened to me? Where did the time go? Who is that old
woman staring back at me? I don't know her! I used to walk
really fast until about a year ago! Now I have slowed down so
much that I am making my friends walk slower! I never had to
do that before! I have a messed up knee and ankle, but I still
used to be able to keep up with my younger friends and now I
can't! I get winded so easily too! I have that I am old! And
there is nothing that I can do about it and it makes me very
sad!

Hi Opal. It is sad that you've already given in, and had to admit to yourself that you are old. But the fact that you still wonder at the person staring back at you in the mirror leads me to think that your physical appearance does not truly describe how you feel. The fact that you get scared at that person looking at you, still says that it's not you, that you see. The real you is burried deep within you. And that picture of yourself could be as young as you want it to be.

Well not really, I do noticed myself getting older every year and its just something I have to accept but declaring myself old? nah, I could be young for as long as I want to, hehe even if I'm gonna be 60 and I could still declare myself young haha that would be cool.

I never think about my true age. If someone asks I have to figure it out to tell them! I have always thought of myself as old , even since I was about 12! My mom said I was an old soul and looking back I agree. I had fun as a child but I was never truly silly. these days I am too busy having fun to Really feel old or young. I'm just me.

I just realized that I might be an old soul myself. I remember being in love when I was five, I always took care of my brother and sister when I was young, and I couldn't wait to get out of school and get my life started. I also carry the weight of the world with me all the time. So, if that qualifies me as having an old soul, then I don't even have to declare it!

I always go by the saying that you're only as you feel. However, that could be a bad thing if you have a backache or something like that! I don't feel old quite yet, but I have to consider the fact that I'll be a quarter of a century old this year! I know that sounds really bad the way I make a somewhat young age sound like it's old. (LOL) I could also say it this way, that I'm halfway to fifty. So I guess I'm not old yet, but I'll have to consult this discussion when I feel that age start to kick in within a few years. Good topic!

I think you are indeed still young, and might have to get back to this discussion after a few years to qualify your answer. Even your username evokes youth! So, I guess I congratulate you for being young, and that I wish you good luck for the many adventures that you are still about to face.
Thanks for the response.

Maybe in joking but in reality not yet. I'm still able to do the same things I did in my teens and 20s. When I can't do those things anymore I'll apply for my "old" card.

Hmm I'm reminded now of something I mentioned to my dad once about growing old. I said that its funny how our bodies age forward beyond use but our minds age backwards so we think as children.

So, does that mean we'll all have our old cards, even though we think as children?
Maybe it's just the idea that we keep ourselves young as we grow older. And the older we get, we go over the top, such that we've be acting as little children.
Thanks for the response.

Hello, Bounce. I'm 57, going on 15, and I think I'll always be 15 in my head, even though arthritis is slowly turning my body into a traitor. I'll describe myself as an old lady in conversations and posts, and I suppose in some people's eyes I am old. However, where it matters - in my heart - I'm still young and looking for new experiences.
My husband is 76, and his health is not good at the moment, but he doesn't think of himself as an old man. Age is not a number on a birth certificate, it's a state of mind. I have a young friend of 28 who keeps asking me to go clubbing with her, as she says I'm much more fun, and a better dancer, than her own friends.

Haha! Hello Sandra!
I bet the dance floor clears out when you go clubbing. You might have a thing or two to teach all the young people there!
As you said in another discussion, if you're as expressive as a flamenco dancer, then I bet people's gaze would surely go to your direction.
Keep on doin' it!

I just turned 50 and I'm stronger and smarter than ever. There's a difference between growing old and aging. I can't stop the years from passing by and I guess one day the years will catch up with me. Until that happens, I'm as young as I feel.

I am in my mid fifties, but dont feel it atall. I stay young both in mind and in body. The only signs of age which is always inevitable is in the skin loosing some of its elasticity, but then again, there are numerous ways that such can be delayed. I love to stay happy and i have found that i always enjoy the company of young people because with them around you, you stay current and have fresh ideas always. My husband feels the same way too. I enjoy letting people know my age. Why? Because i love the ooohs and ahhs and the 'you look 20 years younger'! exclamations.
Cheers!

My feeling is that you are only as old as you feel and most of the time I don't feel old at all. I like to go out and play with my children and I also like to go out with my friends. Things in my life have changed since I was a young mother because I don't get to get out as often as I used to, but even that, in my opinion doesn't mean that I am old, it instead means that I am simply in a different place in my life.

I understand what you're saying about being in a different place in your life. I think I am the same way too. It's just sad sometimes how different situations or different people have the habit of reminding you of the things you can't do anymore.
Thanks!

Not yet! I hope never have to declare myself old, that would be scary. I am feeling young in every cell of my body. I don't care what other people say, I am still feeling young inside. I hope i never have to call my self old at least until I reach 100 years old ( if I ever reach that age). I think we are what we are think about ourself, not others.

Although I am now in my 60s I don't consider myself to be old, but 60 does indeed sound old. I don't feel a lot different to what I did in my 30s apart from having some aches and pains at times. I met an old school teacher a few months ago who was my teacher when I was 11 years old, and I remembered her quite clearly and still felt that same respect for her. _Derek

hello Derek. Just wondering if you know if your teacher has declared herself to be old. She must have, after seeing you!
Kidding aside, I think it is part of being brought up properly to have the same respect for our teachers. I have had a similar experience a few years back. It was a high school teacher. Although his class was mostly story-telling, and mostly about his own personal adventures, I was still enthralled when he started telling stories again when we met.
In that sense, I am still a kid, and shouldn't be declaring myself old.
Thanks for responding.

You know somedays I feel old and some days I feel young. When I see my friends kids all grown up and not babies anymore I feel so old. When I think back to when I met certian friends its been 10+ years. and thats a long time to know someone.
But then again when I think of my age I feel young. I am only 23 and still going strong. I can then compare myself to some people I know and say thank goodness I am not that old!!! lol

Yes I have declared myself old while still feeling very young at times.
I declare myself old in my physical body as I'm not able to do some things that I did when I was younger.
I declare myself young as emotionally I've let go of some of the personal rules I lived by and I've become more free spirited as I gotten older.
As far as wisdom I declare myself old. I feel I've earned what I know.

Actually growing old is one of my fears because there's a lot of complications that come along with it. I'm in my 20's and I feel "older" simply because I'm beginning to realize the responsibilities I have. Family responsibilities I mean. And sometimes it overwhelms me, so I try not to think of too much problems. I guess it works to keep me look younger.

You are right about that! That the one thing that really makes everyone old are responsibilities. No matter what you're true age really is, the more responsibilities you have, the older you get. That is a good strategy you got there, of not thinking of too much problems.
Thanks for the response!

No. Not at all. :-) At the office, employees with law degrees are considered "seniors", as compared to those who are graduates of 4-year courses. But I find myself hanging out more with the younger ones than with the other "seniors" LOL I guess I am still young at heart and bubbly enough to laugh and giggle with office mates younger than me by 4 to 5 years.

There will always be that part of us that makes us feel and think young. That we can 'go' or interact with the young cliques in school or at work. Good that you found your group at your work. Although sooner or later you should realize that you actually belong to the 'seniors'.
Thanks for the response.

I hope that you don't consider yourself as old already. Twenty-six is still very young, specially in my standard. I would love to be that age again, and still know everything I know now. There would still be a lot of things that I would and I could be doing.
Thanks for the response.
