hi. my grandfather died, when father was very young and very soon grandmother also passed away. so , i was not fortunate enough to see paternal grandparents. my mother's parents used to live in native place and we used to travel a lot because of my father's frequent transfers. again, i never got the chance to spend time with them or to know them. now they also had died. last week, my nephew had to do assignment/project on 'family tree' and that made me thinking. because i know only my parents and thats all...after grandparents death and frequent transfers ,we were not able to be in touch with anyone. i really feel sad for not knowing anything about them...i wish i knew my grandparents, great grand parents and so on...... i wish i knew about my family tree! what about you? do you know about your family tree?

There are so many ways to find your family, you should get copies of the papers your family may have left, if there are not public records may help you. I obtained a copy of the birth certificate of my grand mother, then I got a birth certificate of both her parents, and then all four of thier parents, once I got past that one though I could not get more info through birth records because those families were not recorded, however I knew what their addresses were so I checked real estate rolls and found 3 more generations of my family. Now I know who everyone in my family is back 6 generations and that is more than enough for me. I was able to do this with both sides of my family so I know everyone but it took me a long time almost 8 years to get the names of everyone. And the tree is so big I had to do an online family tree so that I could keep track of everyone.

Even though my family tree is over the internet and also can be found in books, I've never bothered to look there. Why do I need to know that I have distant relatives that are 30000 miles away from me? I know my entire family by heart. From cousin to friend, from uncles to grandfathers to parents.

hi univalvex for one thing it might one day save your life if you knew a great grandfather or mother or great aunt carried a certain disease that may have passed down generations but skipped one and may have bearings on your own health. also you learn a bit about your country and history and how your forbears fit into the various wars and happenings. I bet if you ever did try to find out you would get bitten by the genealogy bug.

My family tree...lolz...i never had my interest in my family pasts or anything... I just tend to live in present..and forget about the past.. My family members..that is my mom and dad usually tell me about my great grandparents and what not...but i never had my interests in it... I am very sad for you..but have a small advice..how about writing a family tree diary in which every special incident of your family can be recorded for your future generation..so that they dont feel the same feelings as you do right now..

dsmita I know a lot about my forbears as I have worked on my family 'tree for a number of years. I have gone back on some grandfathers to the fourth gr grandfather and some to just the third grandfathers. but I linked into a zillion other families as I found all the different spoused and children and who the children married when they grew up, and what children did they have. It has been so much fun gathering all this information and putting into a huge file on my computer.

my father is the one who is fond of tracking our relatives. he wants us to go to every occasion of the family so that we would get to know other relatives. he is fond of going to the clan reunion every year.he never misses one. it's good to not lost track of your family tree. it is best to update the whole family tree if another baby is born.
