In the 60's there were communes. Now in 2010, with the economy, a lot of young people are finding friends and several roomates to cut costs. In a way, this is like a "mini' commune. Thinks have been financially hard for my bf and I. He was on unemployment for a year. I have often considered having roomates, but I am allergic to pets, perfume and cigarettes. All of his friends smoke and have a dog or cat.
Have you considered taking in a roomate to cut costs?

I have done this in the past and found most of my roommates pretty reliable and did not cause problems. I had some roommates who gave me some problems but not many. It certainly helps having a roommate as the extra income helps to pay bills and make ends meet. Right now I do not have a roommate but may try again. Most of my roommate situations were short term. My last one stayed the longest. When finding a roommate make sure you interview them well and when you find one make sure you have them sign a lease agreement. I also set specific rules that they must follow, though not many and not real harsh.

When I was seventeen, I was going to college full time and working two part time jobs. I still couldn't afford to live in an off campus apartment, so I took a roommate and rented an apartment about five miles from where we went to school. She was a friend of a friend. I had only met her once at the college we went to. She was nineteen. But boy you would never know she was older by the way she acted! She left dirty dishes in the sink, and once I caught her using my bathroom because she said she didn't want to get her bathroom dirty. She would also have her boyfriend coming and going at all hours of the day and night. And she never locked our apartment door when she would leave.
I haven't had a roommate since.

hi, i am an oversea worker and i stay in Singapore where most of my friend do share a place to cut cost. here i have rented a whole place and shared it with friend to cut cost. here it is hard to keep a pet cause of too much license requirements plus the house owner do not allow a pet. here the more people sharing the better to cut cost. most people we share with are from the same country i am from and most of us respect the rules of the house. smoking is not allowed inside the house. you can smoke but get out of the house.
If it is your place you can set your rules you need to lay down all your rules to the person you want to rent the place if they agree then good for you if not go find someone else.

I will consider, but I really prefer to live alone or without a roommate. haha! It is just for me, I can do whatever I wanna do when I'm alone. I'm not saying I'm a loner but, I don't want to deal with crazy roomies.LOL. If I'll have one, she must be my closest friend and not just anybody. Like you, I don't want to be with a smoker or anyone whose lousy and has some bad habits. hihi! Oh, I love pets but to live with them too and my new rommie oh.. I cannot handle that.
Happy Lotting!

Yeah, things are tough all over! I would definitely rather time travel back to the 60's and live in a commune than live in today's times with roommates. I smoke and have a dog, so I guess I'm off of the guest list. Trying to quit though (smoking not quitting the dog). I wonder when the economy will finally make a turn around? I'm ready for it to! If it doesn't do something soon, maybe we'll all find ourselves living in a commune owned solely by China. Oh well, at least I do like rice:P

Hilarious. "Not quitting the dog." Yeah, you may have withdrawal with that. Or maybe separation anxiety. Hahah,"I do like rice."

No I never did! Because I would find myself uncomfortable living with strangers in my own home. I would like that at all. I #d prefer to run around in boxer shorts or whatever in the privacy of my own home. I cannot do that when strangers are in my house. I prefer earning less but being independent and free.

I have, in the past, had friends become lodgers in my house and I have been more than happy to help them out with a bed and food and they have paid me back with a little bit of rent money every month. I actually enjoyed having people stopping with me as it was company for me and for them too.

well, i think that is a good idea to cut costs, and i think that we must adaptfor the likes and dislikes, most when this are not only likes, for example, the reasons for alergy or healthy problems..
im unenployement, so i wouldnt spend my money paying a house.. but i think that the next year i would try to have a job and try to live alone hehehe.. but perhaps, livin with friends would be a good idea..
