"Reduced" bakery items

A couple of the gorcery stores in my area have a "reduced" rack of items in the bakery/deli section. It's usually stocked with a bunch of bakery breads, donuts, cookies, pastries and bagels that are marked to expire that day, and are priced at 50% off (sometimes more) or so. I love that section! I always go too see what they have every time I go grocery shopping. I usually look for some sweet baked good that I can have for breakfast the next morning. I've tried quite a few of those "reduced" items, but they never really taste "old." I think they taste just as good as fresh if you eat them within a day or two of buying them. Have you ever seen something similar in your grocery store? Do you ever buy those "reduced" items?

Yes, and I like buying those too. They're a pretty good bargain. You get the same food (maybe a day or two older) for a drastically reduced price. There was one time however when I got donuts and they were pretty stale when I bought them. I ended up not eating them. But usually I like the reduced rack and that one box of stale donuts hasn't stopped me from going back! :D

We have goods "reduced for quick sale" in every department and I always look for these first whenever I shop. Yesterday I found some cheeses. It was a 3 pack normally selling for $8.95 and it was marked down to $3.46. There is some Camembert, some cheddar and some herbed cream cheese. Talk about delicious...this item was from the gourmet section which is usually too expensive for me even when it's reduced right down.

I always check this section out, if I find something I like I buy it. It is like you say they do not taste old. I feel like you can get a good buy like this. I believe they would have to be 10 days or older to be bad.

95% of the baked goods I buy are from the mark-down rack! Who can afford to pay full price?! And why pay it when you can get half off? I don't notice any taste difference, either. My local Kroger store throws out anything that doesn't sell--they could give it to the soup kitchens but they don't. So I don't buy any of their baked goods, marked down or not, and I told them so. Of course, they didn't care. I think I'll write to their corporate office.

What's the shelf life on day old baked goods? Do you freeze it?

I have a hard time passing up reduced priced items in the bakery. We have a grocery store that's not too far from our house and it's fun to see what will go on sale that day from the day before. It's definitely not good for my weight, but I can't pass up cheap doughnuts!

yes and I love that section too. I buy up the french bread and freeze it. Whenever we want garlic bread or bruscetta, we have it. I pay about 50 cents a loaf!

wHEN I WAS GOING TO BEAUTY SCHOOL A'hundred' years ago in the next town over they had a thrift store that sold all wonder bread products & i use to stop there all the time. I don't go to that town often so i don't get to buy it now. One thing the store that i shop at for groceries marks there meat down & i buy it all the time. I stock up when i see it & put in in smaller portions in my freezer. It always still has a good date on it & if u go early in the morn u can get some good deals.I have to find all the bargains i can.

Our store has those here to. Sometimes I will see what they have. They are only like one or two days old. But they are not bad at all to eat. To me they are not that old so we get them. And they are at a cheaper price. They put things on the rack just like yours does.

They reduce them because they are getting to the sell by/use by date and need to be sold. I often have a look in these places to see what they have on offer. They give them a day and then if they are not sold then they have to be chucked away.

The same with you I often buy some "reduced" bread in the bakery and I found it as delicious as the fresh one but the price would be much lower.Perhaps it is a good way for the shop to solve the pile of old produce and also give the costomer benefits.
