It started with a faint ringing sound on my left ear. I thought maybe i did not clean my ears well. So i went to the doctor to have it cleaned. After cleaning i didn't hear any sound but after a few days the faint ringing is back. Now, after a few years, both of my ears are ringing and the sound seem louder. I am sometimes bothered with the sound especially when i am about to sleep. Do you have ringing in your ears too? What are your best practices that reduce the ringing sound or totally get rid of the ringing sound?

Tinnitus is a very common condition and many people do not notice it. It becomes a problem for you only if you notice it or it goes out of control due to it being too loud. You should immediately stop plugging earphones into your ears and try and reduce the amount of stress in your daily life. Doing meditation for half an hour everyday is known to reduce tinnitus. There are many medicines that you can try but they don't offer along term solution.

No tinnitus yet, hope I never get it *crosses fingers* My father has it, but it doesn't annoy him a lot. He's very sound sleeper so he'll fall asleep no matter what.
There's not really a lot to do with tinnitus. I think there's people who had it, then became deaf and still could hear the ringing so it doesn't necessarely use the same channels as other sounds. You can get help, but there's different things that helps for different people so you might have to try several things. For some something fairly easy as chewing gum can reduce the ringing. Others use sound to mask it, be it music, TV, radio etc. You should test different things, for example listening to music when you fall asleep. There's also methods to help ignore the sounds, have you tested any of those?

I have had this for 10 years since I developed fibromyalgia. It seems to be a symptom related to fibro (what isn't?). The ringing in my ears has gotten louder over the years. I went back to the ENT a couple of months ago. He suggested I go for a hearing test because I really can't hear some stuff that is really low because the ringing in my ears is overpowering. But insurance won't cover the hearing test so I am waiting.
From what I have heard, a hearing aid will help diminish the ringing in the ears. My mother had ringing in her ears for years but hasn't since she got a hearing aid. Of course she is older (85) but I have heard people have gotten hearing aids BECAUSE of tinnitus and it has helped. I hear acupuncture helps. I just live with it. It's annoying but since I have to take a sleeping aid to get to sleep anyway, I get to sleep that way. If I can't I use my sound machine. You can set it at different sounds - running water, birds singing, waves, forest sounds, etc. I prefer waves splashing up on the beach. Or some people say to turn the radio on in between stations creating white noise.
Good luck!

If you hear of a way to get it to stop please let me know! Both of my ears ring all the time. It has gone on so long now I don't even think about it much. At night or in a real quiet time it seems really loud. Other than that I just try not to worry about it since I can't make it stop anyway!

You poor thing! That must be terrible for you to deal with. I do not know any way to stop it. I have known a few people that had it. Their jobs were very loud at times, and the loud noises can cause tinnitus.
Listening to loud music can cause it as well, and people who put those earbuds on full blast may be ruining their hearing.
No dear friend, I am sorry I have no advice for you to help you. Only preventative things do I know.
