Eating my garden

Hi all... I'm new here, as you can tell from my byline. But I've been gardening my whole life it seems. I love to be able to eat everything I grow. And I love being able to find plants that people generally of as ornamentals yet are edible.
Today I put tomatoes in pots. I am transplanting some volunteer Barbados cherries to my fence line. Not really fond of the fruit but when it is mixed in with other fruits, it isn't obvious & it provides scads of vitamin C. When I get the ground prepared, I have some banana palms to put in the ground.... Did you know that bananas are truly an herb, not a palm or tree?
What is in your garden & how do you make full use of all that Nature/God has given us?

Nothing in the garden yet, as it is too wet and we are still getting cold nights. But as soon as the weather breaks we will be planting. We will start with the cool weather crops like cabbage, kale and brussel sprouts. Later in the season we will plant tomatoes, squash, green beans, peppers and watermelons.
You stated that you like to use plants that most think of as ornamentals. Have you ever tried planting nasturtium? Most plant them as flowers but I understand that the leaves are very good in salads.

I haven't planted them for myself yet, but a friend's mother just planted a bunch on their patio. I showed my ignorance & disdain telling her I don't grow ornamentals. That's when I learned they are very good for ya....
Marigolds are good also. The bright flower petals sure add color to the salads.

I appear to be getting a late start on my garden. I don't start from seed, so maybe I'm not too late. I plan to plant vegetables and herbs this year. Last year, all I planted was tomatoes, because I had such bad luck the year before. Nothing, but the onions, grew the year before last. This year I'm committed to having a "real" garden with tomatoes, carrots, onions, broccoli, cauliflower, and all kinds of herbs. We'll see how well I do.

Hmmm. I always thought banana's were fruit trees! I love to grow things as well. Going to get started on growing some tomatoes later this week. Still abit too cold to plant outside so will start them inside and get them healthier before outside planting. I love gardening but I sure don't have years of experience at it but I do seem to have a green thumb. Spring is just starting here and I for one am ready for the Sunny warm days! Take care!
