Welcome to the group. I am exactly like you. Just not interested in updating the antivirus. I have also given automatic instruction to my Macfee anti virus which cleans the computer every 7 days.
But, yes, it would be prudent on my part to clean it every now and then and check personally.

To be safe, if you have a PC, you should update your antivirus often. I have McAfee and I let it auto-update and it downloads an update almost every day. I've even had it update twice in one day. It all depends on how quickly the threats appear and how fast they develop fixes. It seems like there are more hackers all the time that desire to do harm, so they send out the updates as soon as they can. You risk your computer falling victim to the latest bugs if you don't update often.

I set up my antivirus in auto update mode because I often forgot to update most of the time.

updating don't take more then like 2 or 3 mins because anti viruses only update its virus database and that doesn't take much time, so i update it like once in a week or sometimes twice in a week

I have the auto update feature of my antivirus on all the time so the moment I am connected to the internet the very next moment my antivirus is in a position to get updated..however,I have seen a lot of individuals who prefer to keep the auto update features off always and in that way they believe that they are more secured in the internet..remember that when you are in a network involving different individuals then you will need a phishing filter that is active as it is this filter that provides you with maximum protection..Apart from updating your antivirus I will also ask you to hold periodical scans of your system..I perform periodical scans once every week and try to get rid off malwares and unwanted programmes in your pc..Wish you happy computing.

I update everyday my antivirus protection, when I'm using Windows. If you're lazy, perhaps I would recommend you a free open source: Linux. I also use Ubuntu and is very very good. This kind of open source don't need to update or even use an antivirus program. However, It depends on what type of applications you currently use. If you need graphic tools, then you probably need Windows...

my antivirus updates itself from time to time via its scheduled task...or as soon as updates are available..
i am using microsoft security essentials by the way.
it is very important to update you antivirus definition regularly so as to have the most possible protection therein.
updating not only antivirus but make also a habit to update your software, drivers etc. to cope up with ever changing face of the new age computing

normally i update my antivirus everytime a new defnition is available!!i think that apart brands that you can choose in the security softwares the big secret to stay safe from many threats or the majority is to stay up to date on your security softwares in this way your pc and your dates normally are procted enough from threats!!

whenever I'm online my anti virus would automatically update, it might help you to prevent virus entry because some time is likely to open each page will display a warning that there are viruses that try to enter into the computer. I cannot allow the virus entry, my data could mess and I'll lose a lot of archives.

My anti-virous and other programs do it on their own on a daily basis. SO I don't have to do anything except check and make sure my security settings are properally enabled. That's all I can do. Setting schedules will help the updates as well if you are one of those who think it needs to be done manually.

I have trend micro enterprise version installed on organisational server. As i am having computer as well laptop(At Home) provided by my organisation, the matter is easy for me. In office desktop, it gets updated every day, while in laptop i bring it to office once in 2-3 days and update virus defination files.

If you have the auto update function in the antivirus, just set it up so that it will save you the trouble of updating it yourself.
Most of the antivirus will have that function. Check it out.

It updates itself so i don't have to do it. Newer versions update and do small scans all the time which is great but could also use ram if you don't have much and your pc might be slower and if you don't have fast connection internet can also get slower if antivirus is downloading updates.
