Your Response is Required by Law

I just got my Census questionnaire today. The first thing I noticed was the big writing on the envelope. It says YOUR RESPONSE IS REQUIRED BY LAW. The census is supposed to be private. For one, how are they going to know who filled it out or not? On the blue page inside the envelope contains some instruction and a notice that states your replies are confidential. Law enforcement cannot have them, they are not obtainable via the information act, etc. So, if it is so private, and it is required by law to fill it out, how will they be able to exact any punishment to those who do not fill it out? That statement does not make sense. I will fill it out because I think it is important to see what the communities are comprised of compared to the last census. What do you think about this? Did you get your form yet? Are you going to fill it out and send it in? Do you think filling out the census form is important?

I believe the only questions you are required by law to answer is how many people in your residence and how old they are. The rest is intrusive unessesary bullshytte as far as I am concerned and Ifor one, will not be answering the rest of them.

I'd rather not answer more than I have to (or am required to by law). Do you know where to find out for sure how much is actually required to be filled out?

I filled my out and returned it last week. I didn't think it was intrusive at all. All they asked was my name, address, whether I owned my home and how many people live here, I think. My bank knows more about me than that. Am I missing something? I've heard such a ruckus about the census this year that I'm beginning to feel dense. Any of the information on the form is easily obtainable anyway.

because the government needs to know all about you for their files! seriously, the will keep the information to themselves (hopefully) but you have to fill it out! are they important? i guess so because it guves the government an overview of the people living there.

Huh, no kidding, remind me to remove it from my husband's custody and put it in the paper shredder.
