What defines something as art?

For anyone who has ever seen Mna Lisa Smile (the movie) knows the the great and infamous scene where Julia Roberts challenges the class to define what is art. Well, what is art? I personally dont know how o define it in words but I know when I see something if it is or isnt (in my opinion of course). Can you put it into words?
